Four mid-major House races for Netroots endorsements.

Yesterday, I outlined the reasons for Diane Farrell to gain Netroots support., I now present a completely unbiased selection of candidates for Netroots consideration. I chose  four, with the usual caveat that there are many more important races but with limited resources, these races seemed worthy of particular consideration.

Lewis Katz in the OH 14th
We want to stay as engaged in Ohio as humanly, possible given that the White House is still likely to run through there. We also are looking to push a race on to the scene; Lewis Katz race gives us the ability to do this.  The district only voted 53% for the President and is located in Northeast Ohio an area that is getting Blue Kerry actually cut the total vote margin in this district.  There was some rumor that Republican  Steven LaTourette was caught up with Abramoff, no word yet on this being true Lew Katz  recently won his Primary in Ohio.. His website can be found at http://www.katzforcongress.com/

David Denenberg NY 3rd
This district is the perfect netroots race. Lets start with his opponent, There is no Blue-State Bluish district Republican who is quite as noxious as Peter King, from defending Karl Rove, to being a 9/11 blow hard. To being an immigrant basher to the nth degree Peter King fits the model.  All of this can be found at the race-tracking blog http://www.kingwatch.blogspot.com/. The district is New York, which means it will be benefiting from the Spitzer-Clinton landslide. The district was also a switcher, it voted 52% for Gore but then only 47% for Kerry, and I think they regret the decision.  We are in a perfect position because Nassau County Legislator Denenberg just announced his candidacy today. The DCCC is looking to see if he can raise the money. Lets help.

Dan Seals  IL 10th
There are only 18 Kerry won districts in the country that send a Republican to Congress. This is one of them.  Of the 18, two are open and have primaries. Of the remaining 16, Seven have already been designated Red to Blue by the DCCC. Three await primary conclusion a week from Tuesday [PA 7th, PA 8th and KY 3rd] another six are possible targets. Dan Seals has raised the most money of any of the remaining six.  Frankly the races in PA 15, which is currently a write and IA 2nd and DE Al do not inspire a lot of Confidence. This leaves the NY 25th  and NH 2nd, which are both also very good targets. However right Dan Seals should be given a leg up because, while he has raised the most, he also faces the best-funded incumbent in the more expensive media market. He also will not be benefiting from Coattails. If Blogo holds on, he won't by much. A Seals win,  seals congress.

Coleen Rowley MN 2nd
I see this race quite frankly as a moral obligation. A courageous woman like Coleen Rowley stands up and says she is running for Congress, I feel like the Netroots has a responsibility to back that up. The District is clearly the toughest for a Democrat of any of these races but not by much. It only gave the president 54% and the Incumbent 56%. I know there were issues in the beginning with this campaign but they seem to be getting over them. Money is still an issue. This race also has the added benefit of being in a state like Ohio that hosts a competitive Senate and Governor's race.  This state will also be important again in the Presidential This race is just a wise investment in encouraging people who aren't politicians to step forward to run.

Anyone have anything to say about the list?

Excellent Choices . (none / 0)

Nothing to complain about with this list. With the possible exception of Kirk (who's well liked, and admittedly rather moderate), all of these guys could be in trouble if the tide is right.

Re: Four mid-major House races for Netroots endors (none / 0)

I grew up in Nassau County and I couldn't agree with you more about what a terrible congressman Peter King is. However, Denenberg... hmmmm... not sure about this guy yet. Why do you recommend him so strongly? Just because King is so bad? Denenberg pled guilty to violating a campaign law. That's not going to help paint King and the Republicans as the Party of Corruption. And the two top choices of local politcos who were looking at the race both backed out before Denenberg stepped up to the plate. Progressive money isn't limitless and we should spend it wisely. I am eager to know more about him, especially how he stands on TOUGH ISSUES (not if he supports Social Security and treating veterans with respect). Two weeks ago when I looked at his website, it didn't even mention that he's a Democrat.

On the other hand, I completely see eye to eye with you on Coleen Rowley, not just because John Kline makes Peter King look like FDR but because Coleen herself is an incredible, independent-minded person who will be a truly spectacular legislator. I'm afraid too many of the Democratic challengers are going to be Rahm Emanuel pawns-- in his quest to replace Tom DeLay as the slimiest person on earth-- but one of those Democrats will never be Coleen. We need 200 like her.

I hate King. Plus I think Dave Denenberg is probably a good guy, who could use  the support because he got a late start.
