MD-04: Al Wynn Gets a Challenger in Donna Edwards

Al Wynn is in a 77% Democratic performing district in Maryland, a very safe seat in the fourth district.

Al Wynn is also one of the Verizon 5 who screwed us on net neutrality in his subcommittee vote after getting $19,000 from telecom interests.  But there's lots to dislike about Wynn.  Iraq.  The bankruptcy bill.  The estate tax.  The energy bill.  Wynn consistently sells out his constituents because he's never challenged.

Until now.

Enter Donna Edwards, a very well-respected public servant and current executive director of the Arca Foundation.  She's one of the serious good guys.  For instance, she serves on the board of Common Cause, the League of Conservation Voters, and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.

I'm going to meet her on Friday, so if you have any questions let me know.  The progressive reform community loves her, and I hear that she is just terrific from a lot of people I respect.

This is a September primary, with a clear progressive against an entrenched incumbent in a blue area of a blue state.  Stay tuned.

Re: MD-04: Al Wynn Gets a Challenger in Donna Edwa (none / 0)

Matt, the netroots should really consider endorsing her. There's absolutely no chance in hell that a Republican wins this district, even in a Republican year.

By the way, you missed the vote that unfortunately probably means infinitely more to most of the netroots than his votes on the bankruptcy bill, the estate tax and the energy bill do combined.

It's his vote for the Federal Marriage amendment.

Re: MD-04: Al Wynn Gets a Challenger in Donna Edwa (none / 0)

Clarify? Didn't he vote against it?

I know at least 100 ppl in this district -- not a one will take issue with this.

Donna Edwards (none / 0)

Sounds damn good to me.

This sounds like a perfect opportunity to crash the gate.

When you meet her ask how she is going to serve in D.C. without "going Washington" like Wynn and so many others.

Also, ask her about her feelings on healthcare, the economy and education.

Re: MD-04: Al Wynn Gets a Challenger (none / 0)

Sounds good. But what about another traitorous Congressional black Caucus member who has a primary challenger? I'm referring to Ed Towns of New York and his excellent challenger, Charles Barron.

Re: MD-04: Al Wynn Gets a Challenger (none / 0)

Baron is not credible, unfortunately.

Barron (none / 0)

You can call Charles Barron a lot of things, including a great public debater.  But I wouldn't call him an "excellent" challenger.

Re: Barron (none / 0)

You can call him "Robert Mugabe's friend," among other things.

Towns is mediocre at best, but he's the lesser of two evils here.

Re: MD-04: (3.00 / 0)

Thank God Al Wynn has a credible challenger in Donna Edwards.

I just checked out her website.  She seems to have missed a few things.

First, she missed Wynn's record on CHILD LABOR.  Wynn was part of the "Wal-Mart 22" -- the 22 Democrats who voted against an amendment that would have stopped the Bush Department of Labor from giving Wal-Mart advance warning of child labor inspections.  That is, the Department of Labor agreed to give Wal-Mart a very special favor:  no inspections for child labor violations without several days advance notice.  Wynn stood on the side of special favors for corporations like Wal-Mart, rather than on the side of children's safety; he actually voted to protect Wal-Mart's special treatment.  There's a good story on this here:  http://www.tompaine.com/articles/2005/11 /07/the_walmart_22.php

Second, she also seemed to miss Wynn's record on health care.  Wynn is a big supporter of the Bush "Association Health Plans" idea -- which would relieve insurance companies of all those pesky state regulations like having to cover mammograms.  Apparently, he has been such a supporter that Wynn sent a letter to fellow Members of Congress, co-signed by ultra rightwinger Sam Johnson, touting how IMPORTANT the "Association Health Plan" bill was to certain groups, including Grover Norquist's Americans for Tax Reform (a major proponent of PRIVATIZING SOCIAL SECURITY) and the Chamber of Commerce.  In fact, the letter referred to a bunch of BUSINESS groups, warning "colleagues" that these groups considered the vote on the "Association Health Plans" bill to be a "KEY" vote.  Why would Wynn care whether these Big Business groups and rightwing ideological groups considered a particular bill a "KEY" vote?  Hmm?

And this guy represents one of the bluest districts in the nation.  Go Donna Go!

Something I Didn't Think I'd See (none / 0)

Can't say I was expecting to see Matt use being on the board of the LCV as evidence that someone is one of the "serious good guys."

Re: MD-04: Al Wynn Gets a Challenger in Donna Edwa (none / 0)

Wynn's own ex-wife has campaigned against him a number of times to no awvail, I hope this latest primary challenge will bear fruit. We need a real Democrat in that district.

A question for Donna (none / 0)

So Matt, you asked for questions, and you aren't getting any.

Here's two:

Why does the League of Conservation Voters keep endorsing Republicans who do not vote to protect the environment and are not able to convince their colleagues that the environment matters?

What is their strategy?  How does supporting Chris Shays or Linc Chafee help the environment when they will be outvoted and ignored by the Republican party on these issues?

Shays and Chafee are already endorsed for 2006.

2004  endorsements include:
McCain
Nancy Johnson, R CT
Rob Simmons R CT
Shays, again
Mike Castle R DE
Jim Leach R IA
Steny Hoyer
Vern Ehlers R MI  (Definitely no friend to the environment, except some NIMBY contamination stuff)
Frank LoBiondo
Jim Saxton
Etc etc etc.

In fact, they seem to endorse a lot of questionable incumbents.

How is John McCain different than John Edwards?
