CT Convention Stream - Liveblog

You can watch the convention here: http://www.ctn.state.ct.us/

The Connecticut blogosphere is showing up in force.  Neil Fink, who I'm told will arrive later, is setting up a special Connecticut Convention blog.  Bo at La Resistance, CT Bob, and well-known commenter PamB from the DNC blog are here. Aldon and Tim will be blogging at http://nedlamont.com/blog.

The Lamont nominating speech is happening, and it's pretty good. When Lamont's name was mentioned, there were cheers from all over the floor, not just the outside areas where non-delegates are sitting. The idea behind the speech is to stand on principle, not talking points. The mike was temporarily cut, and when it came back on there were more cheers. This is fascinating. "Now is not the time to be weak or afraid..." There's hissing...

Lieberman has to leave early since it's Friday at sundown. I'm hearing from delegates that they want to vote for Lamont, but will vote for Lieberman unless they are a swing vote. The Lamont supporters are chanting 'Ned, Ned, Ned...' It's a loud minority.

More... Senator Dodd is nominating Joe Lieberman and saying that he's not a Johnny Come Lately on civil rights and public service. There's light applause. He's now talking about the environment. I'm told that there are a lot of people who will vote publicly for Lieberman here tonight in public and for Lamont on primary day. "We thank you for standing up" says Dodd. This speech is taking forever. Dodd is bragging that Lieberman offered the idea of the Homeland Security Department one year before Bush did.

"You may disagree with Joe... despite those differences Joe Lieberman is a valued member of the United States Senate." Now he's talking about the war in Iraq and talking about his differences with Lieberman. He also asked for a standing applause for our men and women in uniform.

Ha ha ha there's a "bring them home" chant!

Dodd is finishing his speech with a rousing "We need Joe chairing those committees" fighting the Bush administration. There was applause about equal to that of Lamont's in size and volume.

This crowd knows there's going to be a primary. The real local insiders are split; some think Lieberman's money is going to crush Lamont, some are confident that Lamont can do pretty well. Most of Joe's support is coming from guys who have known Joe for twenty years, their families, and their networks. Lots of them are here tonight.

"Joe Lieberman has successfully delivered for Connecticut..." Now there's discussion of pork that Joe has brought home...

Right now during the Lamont demonstration on the CT-N live feed, someone's playing 'Rock the Boat'. LOL.

Swing votes (none / 0)

Do you mean that some delegates will vote for Lieberman unless it looks like Lamont won't make 15%?

I guess I just don't have a lot of sympathy for people who want to vote for Lamont but won't.  If this isn't worth taking a risk for, what is?

I really, really hope we sink 'Wet Kiss' Joe's damn boat. The man is the worst sort of quisling scum.

Put the boot in 'em Ned!

Re: CT Convention Stream - Liveblog (none / 0)

Just a quick note unrelated to the substance of the event, which I'll leave to wiser political heads.

Its great to see video included in this terrific liveblogging effort. All the more evidence that we need high-capacity neutral networks to take "my direct democracy" to the next level of power and effectiveness. Nice work. Its great to feel "in on the action" as it happens, even while sitting here working on a report.  Thanks!!!

Shortsighted and naive? (none / 0)

Did the mayor of Bridgeport just call Lamont supporters "shortsighted and naive"?

BTW, thirteen million dollars for the frikkin' Long Island Sound over 18 YEARS is pretty piss-poor, IMO.

Huh? (none / 0)

The CT-N feed is really blurry...are there Lieberman cheerleader-type people in the front of the hall leading people to dance to Pat Benetar???  "Hit Me With Your Best Shot?"

I don't see Lamont signs from any of these angles...  :-(

There's something horribly wrong with watching a bunch of old white people from CT dance to Sam & Dave.

So do they do a town-by-town tally of delegates now?

Oooh, DiNardo is cranky (none / 0)

She's like a teacher who gets cranky because she can't get control of her unruly kids.  Threatening to kick out observers makes her look WEAK.

Seems pretty tight so far... but it sounds like Lamont is performing higher than 15%...

Eleven for Lamont out of Hartford (none / 0)

That's pretty good, right?  Isn't that more than we expected?

240, I think.

Re: CT Convention Stream - Liveblog (none / 0)

There are 1,607 delegates, so 15% is 242.  If there are the same number of delegates per CD (and there probably aren't quite), that would mean Lamont is getting about 31% so far.

Re: CT Convention Stream - Liveblog (none / 0)

How many does Lieberman have?  99 seems fantastic after just one CD.

Asshole from Union (none / 0)

That was really an obnoxious comment from the guy from Union, saying we don't need more millionaire senators.  Hmmmm...wanna bet he supported Kerry for President, another millionaire senator?  Asshole.

Re: CT Convention Stream - Liveblog (none / 0)

After the 2nd, I have 232 Lamont. With Greenwich still to vote, it's already a done deal.

by dblhelix on Fri May 19, 2006 at 08:05:26 PM EST

Re: CT Convention Stream - Liveblog (none / 0)

Is the 15% out of total delegates or total voting? If the latter its done now.

Re: CT Convention Stream - Liveblog (none / 0)

it's academic at this point -- we still have Greenwich to go. Now it's a matter of where it will fall (probably close to 30% of total).

Looks like Lieberman is getting strong majorities in larger towns, but the smaller towns really add up.

Re: CT Convention Stream - Liveblog (none / 0)

Fantastic!  I missed a couple of towns, but my stats have Lamont with more than 30% in CD-2.

Now that Lamont has made the ballot, expect that more people will vote for Lieberman to be safe...

Re: CT Convention Stream - Liveblog (none / 0)

You're right -- unless CD-3 really {hearts} Lieberman. Lamont's total percentage will drop now, but who cares? It's a real primary.
