You can watch the convention here: http://www.ctn.state.ct.us/
The Connecticut blogosphere is showing up in force. Neil Fink, who I'm told will arrive later, is setting up a special Connecticut Convention blog. Bo at La Resistance, CT Bob, and well-known commenter PamB from the DNC blog are here.
Aldon and Tim will be blogging at http://nedlamont.com/blog.
The Lamont nominating speech is happening, and it's pretty good. When Lamont's name was mentioned, there were cheers from all over the floor, not just the outside areas where non-delegates are sitting. The idea behind the speech is to stand on principle, not talking points. The mike was temporarily cut, and when it came back on there were more cheers. This is fascinating. "Now is not the time to be weak or afraid..." There's hissing...
Lieberman has to leave early since it's Friday at sundown. I'm hearing from delegates that they want to vote for Lamont, but will vote for Lieberman unless they are a swing vote. The Lamont supporters are chanting 'Ned, Ned, Ned...' It's a loud minority.
More... Senator Dodd is nominating Joe Lieberman and saying that he's not a Johnny Come Lately on civil rights and public service. There's light applause. He's now talking about the environment. I'm told that there are a lot of people who will vote publicly for Lieberman here tonight in public and for Lamont on primary day. "We thank you for standing up" says Dodd. This speech is taking forever. Dodd is bragging that Lieberman offered the idea of the Homeland Security Department one year before Bush did.
"You may disagree with Joe... despite those differences Joe Lieberman is a valued member of the United States Senate." Now he's talking about the war in Iraq and talking about his differences with Lieberman. He also asked for a standing applause for our men and women in uniform.
Ha ha ha there's a "bring them home" chant!
Dodd is finishing his speech with a rousing "We need Joe chairing those committees" fighting the Bush administration. There was applause about equal to that of Lamont's in size and volume.
This crowd knows there's going to be a primary. The real local insiders are split; some think Lieberman's money is going to crush Lamont, some are confident that Lamont can do pretty well. Most of Joe's support is coming from guys who have known Joe for twenty years, their families, and their networks. Lots of them are here tonight.
"Joe Lieberman has successfully delivered for Connecticut..." Now there's discussion of pork that Joe has brought home...
