Enzi health bill stopped in Senate - for now

The age of miracles (minor ones, at least) is not passed.

Cloture on the Enzi bill (essentially overriding state mandates for health insurance) failed yesterday by a score of 55-43.

(Sign it's a gone goose: Frist did not flip his vote to nay to enable him to move cloture again.)

Dem discipline was pretty tight: only Nelson of NE and Landrieu voted for the motion; Chafee voted against.

Enzi says he'll try to work out a compromise with Dems with a view to coming again with the bill later in the year.

A lame-duck, dog's breakfast, log-rolled deal: now, that's really going to improve the quality of the legislation!

Ergo, save your victory rolls for later.
