AZ Senate: Pederson Struggling Against Kyl

Senator Jon Kyl was vulnerable, but Jim Pederson isn't closing the gap.

A new poll gives Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl a hefty 23-point lead over his Democratic challenger, real estate developer Jim Pederson.

A survey by Rasmussen Reports gives Kyl a 56 percent to 33 percent lead over Pederson.

Kyl, a conservative Republican popular with business groups, is seeking a third U.S. Senate term.

Pederson is the former chairman of the Arizona Democratic Party and is a leading shopping center developer in the Phoenix area.

Kyl's lead in the Rasmussen survey mirrors that of a recent SurveyUSA poll and is a greater spread than shown in the Zogby International survey.

Pederson just doesn't seem to be getting much traction.  Despite all the Republican troubles, Pederson's actually slipped in the polls.  Whether it's internal troubles, or messaging problems, or friction within the party, or Kyl's traction on immigration, this has been a fairly low-intensity race so far.

This is unfortunate, for Kyl's stance on immigration can be the subject of intense smear ads.  I also believe Kyl's ties to lobbyists and his arrogance can be made the subject of television advertisements.  Perhaps Pederson's staff needs to sort through C-SPAN archives, choose a few sequences wherein Kyl articulates a set of egregious and controversial statements and then bombard cathode tubes, broadbands and radio airwaves.  I too am shocked about this race.

Whatever happened to Napolitano's coattails?  And what about the two competitive races for the House in this state?

Not true, here's why: (none / 0)

Look, I know it's a de riguer for some people to dismiss polls out of hand.  However, this is definitely one of them.  Whilst I think Pederson is turning into a lousy candidate and has been fucking AWOL, this poll is bunk.  Why?  Because in ALL reputable polls, less than fifty percent of respondents have even HEARD of Kyl, much less have a favorable.

There's no way 56% approve of Kyl when less than half of the population even know who he is.  Btw, Arizona is peculiar because half the state weren't even Arizona residents fifteen years ago.  So Kyl and even Hayworth have less of an inherent incumbency when their own constituents haven't been in the state that long.

Btw, Arizona (a very libertarian-type state), being 58% pro-choice, would recoil at Kyl's extreme hardline stance on abortion.  But it's up to Pederson to define Kyl and bring this shit up.  Abortion is a good issue for us in states like Arizona.  The dirty little secret is that is why Janet Napolitano won:  the suburban pro-choice Republican soccer moms voted for her to check the wingnut rabod anti-choice legislature.

Such a Shame (none / 0)

Kyl is such a blubbering asshole.

I hope Pederson gets his act together and give's Kyl a run for his money.

From what I've heard... (none / 0)

Pederson is going to launch an ad campaign (he wasn't on the air before now) to counter the perception that his candidacy is struggling.  Keep your eyes peeled for next month's polling to see if this has any effect whatsoever.

Re: AZ Senate: Last thing the Senate needs... (1.00 / 2)

Is another real estate developer.  Sorry for not supporting a Dem. opposing a major GOP baddie, but this guy Pederson represents much of what is wrong with where this country is going.  The real estate developers are just chewing up the countryside building low-density, ticky-tacky McMansions that take valuable farm land out of development, despoil open spaces, and contribute to our pollution, traffic, and energy problems.  So no, I don't want to see another millionaire real estate developer in the U. S. Senate, or House, or any State legislature.  What we've done to this Country as a livable place is going to come back to bite us really soon anyway.  We need to elect people who have the interests of the vast majority of the common people at heart, not the interests of their profession.  Anybody who hasn't got a clue about the harm these parasites are causing needs to take a look at the work of people like Jim Kunstler ("The Geography of Nowhere" and "The Long Emergency").

Re: AZ Senate: Pederson Struggling Against Kyl (none / 0)

Property developers may not be good guys, but Pederson is actually a pretty decent fellow. I know that his recent developments have tried to be far more responsible in energy use, building materials, etc. That's not something that the AZ public is expecting, but he still does it.
I know that during the 04 primary when he led the party he was never a Dean Dem, but he did a halfway decent job of not taking sides, not jumping on the Kerry or Gephardt bandwagon. Later that year I managed a legislative race for a Dem and had a chance to talk with him a few times. He is a good guy who will vote the right way.
These early polls may be wrong for three reasons:
  1. No advertising yet. No one has heard from his campaign. Most Arizonans don't even know we have a Senate race this year. At this point ads would probably be ignored anyway. We have some nice weather in the 80s right now and everybody is outdoors until the temps get into the 100s in the next few weeks.
  2. Many Arizonans don't even know who the 'other' Senator is. They know McCain, because he is a media whore. For a politician, Kyl does a damned good job of staying out of the press between elections.
  3. The activist base here isn't engaged yet. Most people wait until the late spring, when the "snow birds" (winter residents from out of state) leave as the temperatures soar. Then the locals turn out. Happens every election.
I assure you that the Dems are going to put up a good fight here in AZ. But try not to judge AZ politics by the standards of the rest of the country. Pederson can win this one.
