Weldon attacks cancer treatments for Joe's daughter

From the diaries--Chris

Curt Weldon has taking Republican slime politics to an all new low, attacking Joe Sestak for having his 5 year old daughter treated for a malignant brain tumor in Virginia, not Pennyslvania.

A recent article in the Hill summarizes all the slime thrown by Weldon in his desperation: accusing Sestak, a native-born son who spent the last 19 years in the Navy, of being a carpetbagger; trying to swiftboat Joe's distinguished military record; and now, in the lowest of all attacks, questioning Joe's decision to seek the best care for his 5 year old daughter, Alexandra, when she was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.

Atrios posted on this earlier, and found the attack deplorable enough to add Joe to the Eschaton community list.

Here's what Joe had to say:

"Congressman Weldon's remarks to the Hill magazine in a story published this morning regarding my daughter Alex's treatment are inappropriate. To imply, that I should have sent my daughter to a hospital in Delaware or Pennsylvania for political purposes is beyond the pale.

I understand the political arena.  I knew that this campaign would thrust my family into the media spotlight and we are prepared for that.  But I want to make it very clear to Congressman Weldon, that any remarks regarding my daughter, Alexandria's, treatment will not be tolerated.

Like many families dealing with illness, we have had our challenges in the last year.  Through the grace of God, the many prayers of our friends and family, and the wonderful doctors and nurses, we have made it through this experience with our daughter Alex, who continues to inspire us everyday.

Though we recognize the important work done by the many hospitals in and around Philadelphia, it was our personal choice to have Alex treated in Washington at the Children's Hospital because of its outstanding work on pediatric brain tumors.  This decision was based on many things - none of which were political.

This was our choice as Alex's parents and as I have said publicly, I believe these medical choices should be left in the hands of parents and family members throughout the country and not in the hands of bureaucrats, special interests and especially not in the hands of politicians like Curt Weldon."

Tell Curt Weldon he should be ashamed of himself:

Couple ideas:

1) Every time Weldon shows up for an event, get someone following him around saying "Paging Dr. Weldon!! Paging Dr. Weldon!! Dr. Weldon needed for patient referals."

2) Put up billboards congratulating Dr. Weldon.

3) Call him Dr. Weldon in all debates.  If he protests, ask him why he is intruding in a personal private matter.  If he doesn't protest, accuse him of impersonating a physician.

Someone's been reading Guy Kawasaki's "How to Drive Your Competition Crazy." Brilliant. Keep it up!

I wrote about this over at FBIHOP

I didn't realize quite how much of a nutjob Weldon was until I started looking at the news stories he was in.

From someone with his own financial/health issues. (none / 0)

This just earned Weldon's opponent a few of my hard earned $s.

This guy, Weldon, is my Congressman. I really, really want to be able to say "not for long."

What a maroon!

I've signed up to host a Sestak event. Maybe my first diary will be about that, once it happens.

Go for it!

Strike while the iron is hot.  How about a diary introducing everyone to your district?  I'm originally from PA, but central PA.  It's a big state.

I also hear the Pope's Catholic... (none / 0)

Why the surprise?

Politics is a dirty business.

Think of the level of cynicism required to start a war for political reasons: (Tonkin Gulf, Iraqi WMD, etc, etc). Where hundreds and thousands actually get killed.

Look at the guy who gave us the Great Society: corruptly elected to the Senate, author of many a Jim Crow-preserving shenagigan. And let's not mention the Leland Olds business.

Politicians have to check their moral sense at the door to do the job.

Our job is to be sufficiently wised up to know that and move on.

No mention at any mainstream media outlet that I can see.

But god forbid if the Dixie Chicks say they disagree with President Bush.
