CTG numbers and tour

Glenn Greenwald on Matt Drudge, Roger Simon, John Hinderaker... these guys should have stuck to anonymity, like PunditGuy-- at least then their utter lack of credibility would not be so personal.

I agree with Patrick Nielsen Hayden, that Bookscan sales reports generally turn out to be more useful as comparatives than as exact reportage. And I guess it should be pointed out to the conservatives that for our pre-sales of +5000 books we used Working Assets, which is not monitored by Bookscan. I have no idea on the exact number that Amazon translates into, with regards to sales, but would be interested in knowing how Amazon works. But back to the substance.

I'm looking forward to Madison WI and Ashville NC next week, and if I have to point to an indicator of success-- it's the tour. That's where the netroots-to-grassroots action that we preach in the book is being practiced.

We sat down and picked the dates of the tour with only a handful of events or contacts made, then publicized it through CrashingTheGate.com, only saying: "Get in touch with us if you'd like to organize an event."  And the grassroots organizing of events has been phenomenal. There have been 445 invitations or requests for appearances to date. We are touring through 25 states, with close to 100 events, in a little less than three months. And then we are coming back with another PFAW-organized tour of 20 college campuses in September. It's really an amazing thing to be in the middle of happening.

If you are in Wisconsin, be sure and RSVP for the DFA event in Madison next week where +250 have already signed up, wow!

Re: CTG numbers and tour (3.00 / 0)

FYI, the best explanation I've seen of Amazon rankings is http://www.fonerbooks.com/surfing.htm - pretty complex read, as it tries to reverse-engineer the different ranking systems used by Amazon.

Also, I've posted some Ingram sales figures (single distributor) on the related thread on dKos. Even though it's one distributor, the numbers are surprisingly close to the blogged Bookscan numbers.

In my personal experience as an author, Ingram figures make up only a fraction of total sales, which makes sense as they are only one (though the biggest) distributor.

Re: CTG numbers and tour (3.00 / 0)

Trying to translate Amazon rank to precise sales figures is as imprecise as reading as tea leaves -- however, an agent once told me that a 5,000 or 10,000 rank means that your book has sold one or two copies that week.

Which would be good by Amazon standards for a midlist book -- so your single or double digit rank on Amazon speaks volumes.

And may have little or no relation to brick and mortar stores, especially once used copies start being offered on Amazon. (At Barnes&noble.com I once sold 25 copies, in the same period that 1,000 books were sold in their stores.)

The best indication of how well your book is doing at this point are the orders from book stores and number of printings from your publisher.

Again, by any standard, three printings of 50,000 copies in the first month is fantastic for a small publisher, and a medium-sized or large, East Coast publisher would also be pleased if any midlist book fared as well, especially since there's room for growth at the beginning of a press tour, and the book would appear to have legs.

The actual sales of 10,000 in this short a period of time is once again, a mark of distinction for a mid-list book (in other words, those books outside the block-buster category of Godzillas, such as the Clinton biography, which are buttressed by a major-money publicity and ad campaign.)

I see above that there may be a way to divine (3.00 / 0)

from Amazon rank, somewhat, what sales are.

(This is a mystery that's been debated for a couple years now on a writers email list to which I belong, and I'd long ago assigned it to the number-of-angels-dancing-on-a-pin category.)

But since rank is in relation to what all other books are selling on Amazon, it's still not a precise breakdown, by any stretch of the imagination.

But I thank the above poster for the Amazon rank chart, once I pass it on, it will supply writergrrl book authors with yet another reason to obsess further on the mystical implications of their Amazon numbers.

Re: Trying to screw up the tour ? (none / 0)

To me, it looks like this flap over numbers is an attempt to get hosts to cancel book signings and interviews.

Making up negative BS sales numbers will have no actual impact on actual sales, so I can only imagine it is aimed at the tour.
