A Nightmare on Joementum Street: Ned Lamont has Fire In The Eyes

Cross-posted at MyDD.com and DailyKos.com

Last Thursday night I had the opportunity to meet Ned Lamont and talk with him face-to-face and in-depth about his race to unseat Joementum Lieberman. We got down to it, to put it bluntly, no holds barred, and I'm telling you right here and right now Ned  should win this race. He deserves our attention and as much support as the netroots can muster. This guy gets it, folks. He can take Joementum out, ridding us of a major embarrassment in the Democratic Party and an unapologetic shill for right-wing extremism. I'll tell you how and why I came to this conclusion below.

Disclaimer: I am a professional political research and strategy consultant. For the past 20 years. I am an outside-the-Beltway professional, thank God, and am the researcher Jerome and Markos quote in Crashing The Gate. Jerome and Markos invited me to the party (thanks guys, much appreciated), so Thursday night was literally the first time I've ever met or talked to Ned or anyone inside his campaign. I do not work for him or the campaign and no one, including Ned, asked me to post on this or anything else. They don't even know I'm posting this. The post is entirely motivated by my personal desire to provide the netrooots an inside, behind-the-scenes assessment of the guy who's taking Joementum on. I had the opportunity to find out, I took it and this post is my report to you.

I imagine most are familiar with the phrase `fire in the belly' when it comes to  candidates for public office. It's a shorthand way of saying a potential candidate has the gumption, the oomph, the stamina, the willpower, the fortitude, the guts to make the run and endure the endless campaigning, attacks, handshaking, baby-kissing, yadda, yadda. And while fire in the belly is a necessary component of a successful candidate's make-up, no question, it also has the element of a charging bull to it. A candidate with fire in the belly might, figuratively speaking, run into a brick wall. Repeatedly.

In my experience, though, fire in the belly is not the crucial aspect of candidate assessment. It's Fire In The Eyes, baby. Fire In The Eyes means a candidate is on a Mission. Yes, from God, as the Blues Brothers told us. Fire In The Eyes is about strategic smarts and `no mercy'. It means a candidate will see the kill shot in a campaign when it opens up and take it without hesitation. Fire In The Eyes means a candidate knows he/she is the `right thing to do' for voters in the election and the other(s) are not. It has elements of intensity, of justice, of understanding campaign reality and, most importantly, Fire In The Eyes combines the elements of: a) recognizing absolute and total political combat is coming with b) the determintion to prevail under any and all circumstances.

Ned Lamont has Fire In The Eyes, folks. I have no doubt whatsoever about this. He needs a little `spit polish' here and there, but he's ready and he's in it to win. We talked a lot about strategy, positioning and the political environment, the zeitgeist. I'm not going to go in great detail here because that gives too much information to Joementum and his flacks. However, Ned understands what he's up against and he understands better how to navigate and what to execute campaign-wise. He's beginning to see potential kill shots, he's locating them on his radar now, getting targeting coordinates. He knows he must be fearless, relentless. He's seeing the campaign from a more strategic and psychological view.

His messaging may take a turn, a good one, look for it. It will be about pressure, if it happens. Squeeeeezing Joementum. Ever increasing, unrelenting pressure. Merciless execution to draw out Joementum's `real self' for public display. "Tell the truth, Ned. Give the people the truth", I said to him. He's 10-4, roger wilco on that.

Anyway, that's my report to you, the netroots. As much as I can say publicly. This may, should, turn into a campaign the likes of which Connecticut has never seen. Let's hope so. I urge you to give this race the attention, the `lock-on', it deserves. And please give your support, in whatever way you can, and as much as you can, to Ned's campaign. He needs us and we can make the difference, not just with money, but with chatter, buzz, overt support, blog posts, letters to the editor, etc. We can help Ned greatly in creating the reality that Joementum's a goner, a loser suck-up to the extremist right-wing. You can start working with Ned right now, right here. Please do. 10-4, everybody, over and out.

Wow.

I really really really hope you're right.  Joe's gotta go.

Thanks for the update, and I can't wait for this "turn" you speak of :)

I'll second that... (none / 0)

I really hope he's got the fire in the eyes. One of my friends is interviewing with Lamont's campaign tomorrow for a position. He's already got an offer from Lieberman, but he's leaning Lamont's way.

hmmm... (3.00 / 2)

sure to get troll-rated, but I'll give it a go anyway...

This post is heavy on metaphors and strange buzzwords, light on... well... everything else... This is an update? Really?

Fire in the belly? The eyes? the gumption, the oomph, the stamina, the willpower, the fortitude, the guts... Mission from God? Strategic Smarts? kill shot? right thing to do? Prevail under any circumstances? spit-polish? in-it-to-win-it? I can't even read and post any more...

This was just weird, if you ask me.

Re: hmmm... (none / 0)

I agree.

Far too close to bedtime to parse it, but - a lot of diaries like this from pols or those in some way involved in campaigns seem to come from the planet Zarg.

Or, at least, folks who don't really know blogs - this one, in particular - or can't be arsed to rewrite material produced for other purposes.

(As I just happened to write about earlier today.)

Speaking of Zarg and Klepton... (none / 0)

there was Marcy Winograd's diary. Ye gods--there was definite "mission from g-d" tinges there. I spoke to one of my friends at the campaign concerning, and they'll be polishing it up from now on.

Re: hmmm... (3.00 / 1)

I disagree with your conclusions.  I've read other posts from this author and have found them insightful and interesting.  I take this into account when I read something like this.  This is a subjective post, not ment to delve into facts, but rather to try to convey the emotion of the candidate, the willingness to win.

We know what Joe has done on this score, he controls the State Party, and is using that strength to his advantage.  Yes, this is a partisan piece, but one where the writer has drawn a conclusion.  He informs us why he has drawn that conclusion, emotionally.

Re: hmmm... (3.00 / 1)

He must also have his "game face" on now.
Because there are "no more tomorrows"

Well, I just added two more cliches to the list off the top of my list.

Re: hmmm... (none / 0)

So the kind of ideological fervor that mobilized the far right god-types of the repub. party for w. certainly has no place within our party, eh?

Even if the ideology on our side is right and relevant. Could only work against us, eh?

And topics like universal health care and public financing of campaigns are pie in the sky, eh?

Could never generate new and loyal interest in the Democratic party, eh?

K., I'm off to Canada, where I hear it's ok to be excited about things that are relevant to you.
The shock and novelty of no bullshit candidates will wear off when they become commonplace in a Democratic majority.  Until then, rah fucking rah!

Ned Lamont has Fire In The Eyes (3.00 / 1)

Gumption and attacking Lieberman for being too Republican will not be enough to win this primary.

If you ask me, and I acknowledge that noone is, the way to defeat Lieberman is by challenging him on issues.

Example: Lamont comes out for real Universal Health Care - Lieberman is on record opposing it. Lamont comes out for withdrawing from Iraq - we all know Lieberman's position. That's what he makes the race about. etc.

This way Lamont can say, "I am the candidate who wants to end the war..." or "I am the candidate who is for health care for all."

Being the anti-Lieberman is not enough. But I do believe he can win, but only if he's smart about it.

If we can bitch-slap (sorry, gals. I'd never do it to a women, but Joe...?) a guy like Joe, that will send one big unmistakable message to the ItBeltway consultants who make their easy money and have lost campaign after campaign for us.

I can't wait.
