Meeting Eric Massa

I met Eric Massa yesterday.  A 24 year veteran of the Navy, Massa is running in an upstate NY district that is beset with economic problems.  It traditionally leans a bit to the right, but there is a deep rage there against the status quo that suggests that incumbent Republican Randy Kuhl is vulnerable.  Kuhl, you'll remember, is a first-term Congressman who is famous for pulling a shotgun on his wife.  He's not well-liked in district, but he has lots of money.  If we're going to take Kurl out, the first reelection campaign is when it's going to happen.

I liked Massa.  His plan on Iraq is 'out is better than in', and 'sooner is better than later'.  And he has first-hand knowledge of what it's like to pull out of that part of the world, since he was in Desert Storm.  He told me it took 18 months to 2 years to pull out of that one, and that's without people shooting at the military.  On the other hand, Massa recognized that the 'I want a pony' punditocracy which is always demanding a plan from Democrats has it wrong.  I'm paraphrasing here but what Massa said is that it doesn't matter if Democrats in Congress have a plan, since Bush is still in charge of executing and he will screw it up.  The only thing Democrats can do is win in 2006 and stop Bush from screwing it up worse.  I liked that honesty.  He also said that oil is our number one national security problem, which to true and suggests a larger vision.

There was a lot more to it than that.  Massa is a new politician, but he's a good one.  So far, he doesn't have that much cash on hand, but the institutional spigots are starting to open as people realize Kuhl is vulnerable.  Massa blogs every Sunday on a bunch of blogs (including MyDD), and he says he'll keep doing it when he gets to Congress because it helps him communicate with more people and stay in touch.

Anyway, that's not a huge write-up, but I didn't want to just let this meeting go by without mentioning it here.  Kos has a longer and better one, which you can check out.

The bottom line for me is that Massa is a leader, and we need some damn leaders in Congress.

Re: Meeting Eric Massa (3.00 / 1)

I like Massa a lot; he's whip-smart, he's got the experience and communicative skills needed to make a district like this competitive.  According to the FEC, his campaign is the only one that Wesley Clark's PAC has donated to so far ($5k last December).  And if you're with Wes, you're with me.  I honestly hope that Massa gets added to the "netroots candidates" page in the near future.

(Also doesn't hurt that he looks like a non-Hispanic version of my favorite International Relations professor.)

Re: Meeting Eric Massa (none / 0)

Thanks Matt.  I met Eric last summer and started volunteering for him immediately after the first meeting.  I knew he was the real deal and would be a star soon.  He is also a leader of the Fighting Dems.  Eric was mentioned, along with Andrew Horne, by Paul Hackett in his Hardball interview.

Incidentally, Horne will be liveblogging with Eric this Sunday afternoon.  Expect some strong words.  They will talking about dissent and patriotism, the craziness of Bush's pre-emptive strategy, Darfur, and some other realted issues.

Question for you Matt (none / 0)

I have limited resources to give this cycle. I have given to the DSCC (but no more), the DNC, local & state party, Hackett, Lamont, and Rodriguez.  I know it comes down to personal preference, but I would like your (I trust your knowledge) input on where the most bang for my buck will be. Maybe a separate post on ranking of donations. Thanks.

Re: Question for you Matt (none / 0)

I haven't given to Massa yet.  I'm trying to figure out where we can get the most bang for the buck, and I think Massa is probably a good bet but I'm looking around.

Re: Meeting Eric Massa (none / 0)

The Massa event I went to in DC was impressive since Wesley Clark and Admiral Crowe explained their personal experience with Eric Massa and why he would be a great Representative.  Plus you can see Eric's honest passion when he speaks.

If it were based solely on the quality of the candidate, Eric Massa would win.

Re: Meeting Eric Massa (3.00 / 1)

I've met Eric on a couple of occasions over the last year and my opinion is only stronger that he is real, he is sincere, he will fight and work, and he won't give up.  He's had an uphill battle in this district, but he's coming out on top with the residents.  It's impossible not to recognize his passion, but his vision and intelligence comes through immediately too.  The people of the 29th would do well to elect Eric Massa as their representative in Congress.  Nobody will work harder for them.  He gets it.  I support him financially cause I'm too far away to do much else.
