HOW MANY DISTRICTS STILL TO GO? WELL 47 ACTUALLY

As we move further and further into the filing season for this years midterms it seems that interest is continuing to rise in seeing Democrats running in as many House districts as possible.

The gang over at Barry Welsh's campaign - IN 6 have updated their "50 State" page:  http://www.barrywelsh.org/fiftystate/ind ex.html - 54 districts left to fill according to their strict criteria.
But join me below the fold as we get to 47 districts remaining............

As well as the Welsh Campaign the guru's of house races have been blogging away too.

The Welsh team take some convincing as to candidate nominations, the others less so. For what it's worth I reckon that we can count these following candidates in as well. Despite no candidate web site or State SOS filing that I can find online (I have included links to supporting evidence) they are IMHO obviously planning to run:

Which leaves us at 47 to go! How do I differ from RBH's list?

1)    CA 44 -  Where Louis Vandenberg is having another run: http://www.vandenbergforcongress.com/
2)    PA 9 - As per above if Paul Politis is attending candidate forums he is running IMHO, RBH is not so sure.
3)    OK 3 - RBH Thinks John Harris is in I am not convinced. (see below)
4)    TN 7 -     Where Kossack Jeff Greer is having a go: http://www.commonfsense.org/index.html
5)    UT 1 - RBH Thinks Craig Axford is in I am not convinced. (see below)

There is also 3 potentially emerging candidates as well. If these guys are in your state then contact and encourage them to run.

Some of these might have been competitive had decent candidates declared by now eg NY 3, FL 10, IA 4 so in these and other races there IS STILL TIME FOR A GOOD CANDIDATE TO BE COMPETITIVE.

If one of these districts is in your state hassle the state party to see who might be thinking of filing or FILE yourself. At least 8 of these uncontested races could well have competitive senate races and 6 or 7 may have competitive governor races. It is unthinkable to allow up ticket candidates to suffer the loss of votes that inevitably goes with an uncontested house race.

Re: NY 3 (none / 0)

For the record the article doesn't state that Mejias has dropped off.  It says he has demured, which basically means has delayed any decision.  he was expected to say yes or no about 2 weeks ago, but has not made a decision either way yet

Re: NY 3 (none / 0)

I think to demur is to take exception to or to object actually.

Re: NY 3 (none / 0)

Just looked it up :)

It actually could mean either one.

Its hard to say from the article itself which meaning he meant, but due to the fact their has been no answer either way till this point from anywhere I think it was more than likley that he is delaying a decision

Patrick Pillion (none / 0)

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (ajc.com) reported that Pillion declared his candidacy in its February 2 edition.  That's about as real as it gets in Georgia.  BTW, this district is shown as GA-8 on the Barry Welsh.com site.  It depends if you count the redistricting or not.

The Alabama Democratic Party site reports that qualifying for congressional seats begins on March 4.  The current news is filled with reports about state races from governor on down. No added information from AL.com either.

The Des Moines Register reports no further information.  On the Presidential front, Tom Daschle was in the state.  George Pataki is making a 3 day visit this month.  Evan Bayh continues to be active with a visit planned for later this month.  The same is true for John Edwards.

NOLA.com reports that up to a million mailings will be sent to encourage out of state voting for 2006.  Charlie Melancon and Gov. Blanco may be breathing a sigh of relief.  Maybe.

I really wish I had additional candidates to report at this time but that's it.

Washington 5 (none / 0)

Is the home district of former House Speaker Tom Foley, D-Spokane.  It also contains Washington State and Gonzaga.  Maybe we could run John Stockton, since he's got name recognition and also hails from Spokane.  Seriously, I have no idea what his political views are.  This is just a lark.  But his father owns a bar near the Gonzaga campus in Spokane so ...

One of the Virginia districts is a long thin slice running down the Shenandoah way south.  It contains the birthplace of Woodrow Wilson (Staunton) and the base of Jerry Falwell (Roanoke).

One other tidbit.  The Arizona Republic (Phoenix) is reporting that the GOP's internal polls in its 25 most vulnerable seats is disastrous.  This was the leadoff to the Shadegg speeches.  It didn't convince people to make a real change but it did scare them into dumping Blunt.

Which 'candidacies' to include? (none / 0)

I think Rex Freedom at the Barry Welsh site is wise to be cautious about including candidates until there is a fair degree of certainty that they are running, ie. they have either filed or set up a campaign website. Including candidates where there is still some doubt may deter other candidates from coming forward and possibly leave districts without any candidate at all.

Having said that he has included some where the evidence is not exactly cast iron yet, eg. PA-5.
As for CA-44 where does the website indicate that Vandenberg is running again? It doesn't appear to have been updated recently.

There's a contact email on Vandenberg's site, why doesn't someone just ask?

Re: Which 'candidacies' to include? (none / 0)

I agree totally with Rex Freedom being cautious and indeed have discussed this with him at length via email. All of the districts he included last update were suggested by me and none of the races cited above were suggested as being in the bag for their site. My intention in doing this diary was to prompt others to hunt out more conclusive evidence for these races and any others and David Kowalski has been very helpful in that regard.

Rex and I agreed that any candidate that says "hi i'm running" via blog entry ie PA 5: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/1/13/ 71739/2309

is obviously running.

Re CA 44 i would ring to confirm but I live in Australia and the wife would be a little perturbed :).

However Vandenberg is in as his 2008 endorsement of Gore shows that his site has been updated and he has been cited in on line fliers promoting political events the most recent being only a few days ago promoting a rally for busby in CA 50.

Would provide links but am at work on laptop and breaking rule not to blog at work for one of only a few times (won't do it again boss honest).

I know of at least two listings which are highly questionable, OH-07 and OH-16.
