IN-08: GOP Smear Machine At Work In 'The Bloody Eighth'

Races in Indiana's eighth Congressional District are always tight. It's one of few House seats in the country that has been consistently competitive over the years, with incumbent Republican John Hostettler winning reelection with 53% or less support in his last three races. This year's race should be another close one, with Democrat Brad Ellsworth, the Sheriff of Vanderburgh County, running a strong challenge. If you need any proof of Ellsworth's strength, all you need to do is ask Hostettler. He might not admit it in so many words, but recent actions speak volumes.

A mere three days after Ellsworth officially entered the race, right-wing blogger Joshua Claybourn approached The Courier-Journal with photos of Ellsworth's 19-year-old daughter drinking alcohol that he pulled from her Facebook site. At his site, he pouted about having to engage in "politics of personal destruction," but argues that, since Ellsworth is a law enforcement official, it's relevant. My guess is that he'd hoped the photos would run with no mention of his name, but when his name came up, he recognized the need for some serious backpedaling.

Rather than dismissing the photos as cheap politics unworthy of Hostettler, the Congressman's sister and spokeswoman Karen Hammonds ran with it, attacking Ellsworth's daughter for posting the photos. To me, that's enough to suggest that it was Hostettler's campaign who sent Claybourn to do their dirty work. After all, Claybourn counts Hostettler as one of his 'famous friends'. And even though Claybourn's taken down his blog's archives and immunized it from automatic archiving and cacheing with a robots.txt file (gee, why ever would he have done that?), a Google search reveals his ties to the Congressman, even in one post bragging about his "sources close to Congressman John Hostettler."

This is how the rightist smear machine works. We saw it up close and personal here in New Jersey during last November's gubernatorial race. Republican operatives cook up dirt and pass it on up the food chain, until it winds up as front page "news" in traditional media outlets. There will be more of this in the Indiana Eighth, as well as across the country.

But it shows that, by stooping to this level so early in the campaign, Hostettler must be scared out of his mind. He's never been what I would consider a safe incumbent and with the momentum behind the Democrats, he obviously feels that it's kitchen sink time. After all, this is a guy who's a really wingnut.  He's tried to bring a handgun on an airplane, accused victims of breast cancer of having had abortions, argued for the right of individuals to own nuclear weapons, opposed any and all environmental regulations, claimed that it was Jews "who killed Jesus Christ," opposed funding for post-Katrina reconstruction, and supported the pork-heavy transportation bill. (No word on whether or not he's also a puppy kicker.) He can't run against Ellsworth on the issues. Smear is all he's got.

Ellsworth is going to kick his ass (none / 0)

Brad Ellsworth has more money, more patriotism, more intelligence, more compassion for the needy, and more of a personality than John Hostettler.

I hope Ellsworth won't have much to worry about. Here in Florida we have a nationally known Governor whose daughter steals drugs from her rehab, and it hasn't seemed to affect him very much. Some people actually consider him popular.

JEB (none / 0)

As long as we are dealing with the politics of personal destruction, you left out the following:

1. Columba Bush was busted at Atlanta Hartsfield for smuggling $20,000 worth of goods from Paris

  1. Jeb Jr. was caught (at 16) wih his pants down and his girl friend's skirt up
  2. Geoge P. Bush stalked and harrased a former girlfriend
  3. Noele Bush you already mentioned.
  4. Jeb Jr. was arrested again for being drunk and disorderly.

Did  I leave anything out?

Re: JEB (none / 0)

Ha, no you pretty much covered it all, except for JEB's own troubles years ago caught in a scam with a "business" partner, and Neil's long list of scandals...

I thought it was supposed to be limited to the immediate family of the politician. Geez I don' have the time to write a book...

Re: IN-08: GOP Smear Machine At Work In 'The Blood (3.00 / 2)

This made me think about the outpouring of support for Ciro Rodriguez over the last few days and the Dean support strategy in which people donated to the DNC every time Dean was attacked.

Here's a modest proposal:  House races are small below-the-radar kinds of things.  If this kind of dirty politics is met with an outpouring of out-of-state Netroots support for the opponent that they would otherwise never garner, after it happens a few times Repub candidates may stop and think twice about whether the dirty tactics are worth the support their opponent will get.  I think it could make a particularly big difference in House races.

I'm donating via Act-Blue and I urge others to do the same:

troll goal (none / 0)

I remember when the Dean campaign was at its height, they had the "troll goal"; perhaps we could run a little donation drive whenever one of these things comes up.

Re: IN-08: GOP Smear Machine At Work In 'The Blood (none / 0)

He's "argued for the right of individuals to own nuclear weapons?" That's  It's bugshit crazy. It's not like privately-owned nuclear weapons couldn't make their way into the hands of the crazy.

I wish Indiana Republicans would stick to being crazy about things that are less directly harmful, like the value of pi...

Looked up Claybourn on facebook and found him. I thought about sending him an angry message but decided against it.

Re: IN-08: GOP Smear Machine At Work In (none / 0)

Yeah, I also personally found some photos of Claybourn passed out drunk, mooning the camera, etc. Ultimately, I decided not to post them because they just aren't relevant and they're pictures of a young guy being a young guy. Besides that, I'm pretty sure he was probably of legal drinking age when they were taken. Either way, he's just the messenger here. Hostettler's the problem -- not some kid who wants his side to win.

Re: IN-08: (3.00 / 1)

Do I read this correctly? Hostettler's spokesperson attacked his opponents nineteen-year-old daughter?

That is the lowest thing I've ever heard of.

No one no matter how much we hated Bush in 04 ever proposed any discussion whatsoever of the behavior (or illegal, underage drinking) of the President's daughter as a campaign issue.

Heh. (none / 0)

Good point.  That said, I'd hope that the Gore and Kerry campaigns would have avoided any direct mention of the Bush twins debauchery.

GOP Smear Machine (none / 0)

If the Democrats weren't so hopelessly lame and lazy about dealing with the issues that will affect people's lives, this smear stuff would be irrelevant.

For example, the budget reconciliation that was just passed 216-214 in the House.   There are damned good reasons that vote was so close.  There are provisions in that bill that will affect millions of Americans adversely and almost nobody knows about them.  Why, oh why, do Democrats babble on about "the poor" when the GOP is screwing middle class Americans as they did with the changes to the "lookback" period for Medicaid elegibility?  People got a little tax cut and the GOP is going to take away your ability to hold on to relatively small amounts of family wealth, after bleating about how bad it is not to support repealing the "death tax" that only affects the super rich.

How come the Dems can't do something with that?  It leads one to believe they're really OK with changing the laws to hurt middle class people.  Wringing their hands about "the poor" has been a bad strategy for the last 20+ years.  Why haven't they learned how important it is to connect with the middle class?

That is the lowest thing I've ever heard of.

No barrier of law or decency is too high to cross, no stunt too low to sink to, if they are to prevent the government of the country chosen by the Baby Jesus from before the beginning of all time to lead the rest of the world to the Light from falling into the hands of a party unworthy to lead it -- and a party of high marginal income tax rates to boot.

If you ever wonder 'what won't they do?', just reflect upon what Hezbollah translates to....

If you'd like a handy point from which to donate to the Ellsworth campaign, Ciro Rodriguez's campaign, and/or Busby's winnable race in California, they happen to be the top three boxes on the ActBlue page below:
