LA-2: BREAKING -- Jefferson Drops Out of Debate at Last Second

Hate to use "breaking" in a title, but it is what it is.  I am just getting word that "Dollar Bill" has dropped out of the debate moments ago.  More information as I get it -- I'll keep this thread updated with information as I receive it.

Update [2006-12-8 17:7:57 by Tim Tagaris]: Apparently Jefferson's wife is holding a press conference right this minute. I obviously can't make it, since it started 3 minutes ago -- but a friend of MyDD two minutes away from the location is en route. No details on whether or not the debate goes forward without Dollar Bill.

Update [2006-12-8 17:45:43 by Tim Tagaris]: The official reason is that Jefferson couldn't get back to LA in time after the offshore drilling royalty vote this afternoon. BlueSunBelt has more.

Update [2006-12-8 17:58:43 by Tim Tagaris]: Piecing it together: Last night's debate was originally cancelled because of the off-shore drilling vote that didn't go through on Tuesday as scheduled. If it had, we would have had the debate yesterday evening. The debate was to be held tonight and Jefferson wanted to do his part by teleconference from D.C. Carter said "no," it was going to be in person or not happen at all. Jefferson reluctantly, and apparently tenatively agreed, but in the end couldn't make it back in time because the vote happened this afternoon. Still waiting for the call from the "friend of MyDD" at the Jefferson presser.

This probably benefits Jefferson (none / 0)

1) He can say he was busy doing the people's business and 2) Karen Carter no longer has a chance to go mano-a-mano with Jefferson and beat him, helping him stay slightly less tarnished.

Are they holding the debate without Jefferson?

More LA breaking news... (none / 0)

I got this in my inbox from Mary Landrieu...

WASHINGTON - The U.S. House of Representatives today passed final legislation that includes the Domenici-Landrieu Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act, S. 3711, which opens substantial new areas to oil and natural gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and shares billions of dollars in revenues with Louisiana and other energy-producing Gulf Coast states for coastal wetlands restoration, hurricane protection and flood control projects. An additional share will be used to build parks and preserve green spaces in all 50 states. The package also includes several key tax provisions, including a two-year extension of the Gulf Opportunity (GO) Zone tax incentive that provides strong motivation to invest in the Gulf Coast .

"A mighty hurdle was cleared for Louisiana and the Gulf Coast today when the House passed the Domenici-Landrieu plan as part of a final legislative package," Sen. Landrieu said. "After almost 60 years, Louisiana will finally receive a fair share of the oil and gas revenues produced off our shores. This dedicated revenue stream is necessary to restore our coastal wetlands, build levees and construct an effective flood control system - all of which will fend off hurricanes rising in the Gulf.

"This victory for Louisiana demonstrates how successful we can be when we work as a team and keep our focus. The Louisiana congressional delegation and Governor Kathleen Blanco, Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu and many local officials, business leaders and civic groups never stopped working to achieve this goal. Numerous groups have been essential to this effort, including America's WETLAND Campaign to Save Coastal Louisiana, Parishes Against Coastal Erosion, Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, Women of the Storm, Levees.org, Coast Guardians as well as national groups such as the National Association of Manufacturers, the American Chemistry Council, the Consumer Alliance for Energy Security, the Agriculture Energy Alliance and countless others."

I'm sure this bill is chock-a-block full of bad tax details but I'm very happy for Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. They wanted this bill and they got it and that's the first pure positive from the Federal govt. since Katrina hit the region.

Re: More LA breaking news... (none / 0)

Obviously the late vote on this bill is part of the reason Jefferson couldn't make the debate.

It should be pointed out that he was offered the opportunity earlier in the week to participate via teleconference and declined that as well.

Re: More LA breaking news... (none / 0)

Actually, I think Karen snubbed the tele-conference idea.  It was to be in person, or not debate.  Jefferson reluctantly agreed -- i sense it's because he's down, not because of his desire for a real dialogue -- and we are where we are today.

Re: More LA breaking news... (none / 0)

Tim's right.  It can still be said that this is a result of Jefferson's maneuvering.  Of course it could also be said that Carter should have called his bluff and agreed to the teleconference.

In other words.. the candidates are back to arguing about who's ducking the debate... which is where we were two weeks ago.

Links On Debate Cancellation (none / 0)

I found some links and put them up. Official reason is Jefferson could not return from DC in time for the debate.

Well, at least it wasn't because his refrigerator broke down.
Smart move on Carter's behalf to insist on a face to face.

A mistake on her part, I think (none / 0)

Not agreeing to have him to participate by teleconference, especially when it already delayed because of a vote on a bill positively (hopefully) affects Louisiana.

So now, one of the last impressions of Jefferson voters are left with is that of a public servant working flat out to bring in this bill for the state, so much so that he missed the very debates he really, really wanted (I am correct that he was the one to insist on them in the first place?).

Many Louisianans seem to hate both of these people, for good (if different) reasons... be interesting to see who wins and what effect that overall unpopularity with the various constituencies has on their future actions, if any.

Not a mistake on her part (none / 0)

Having him do it by teleconference would have highlighted even more his sitting in the superior position.

Re: Not a mistake on her part (none / 0)

That's probably true, too. Either way, I don't see how she benefits from this as mostly it looks (at least from here) as if she has just been out maneuvered by a more skillful politician.

I don't have a clue how this will be viewed from within Louisiana, though, of course.

None of this (none / 0)

Helped, that is for sure, agree.
A case of bad timing. I would have loved to have seen Carter debate Jefferson, too bad that is lost to time, as I think Carter would have done herself well in a debate with Freezer Guy.
I have my hopes that LA-02 will do the right thing and toss him out. I don't think his last minute attept at redemption will end up helping him.

It just adds credence to the fact that they had an impotent Representative at a time when they least needed that.

Re: LA-2: BREAKING -- Jefferson Drops Out of Debat (none / 0)

Might it still be possible to reschedule the debate?

Exactly when does the election take place, anyway?

Re: LA-2: BREAKING -- Jefferson Drops Out of Debat (none / 0)

Sounds like Carter was the one that cancelled the Debate.

If Jefferson offered to debate, albeit by phone with legit excuse, then there was no reason for Carter to refuse. By refusing to accept the reality of legislative life, it calls to question her confidence in her own debate performance.

She loses points with me. Jefferson at least offered a solution to a bad situation. He, however, can't earn any real points with me no matter what...he needs to go.

I'll repeat my earlier comments from yesterday or so and predict he will win the race. Too bad but odds are, according to very experienced Louisiana people on scene, that's what will happen.

Then, hopefully, he'll be indicted etc. and we can have an Open Race.

After Katrina I updated all my cellphones to Internet capable ones. They are more limited than laptops in what you can do but are indispensable when you cannot otherwise connect to the Internet.
