Is Pete Domenici Ready for Prime Time?

Last week I took a gander at the potential for a real race for Senate in New Mexico this cycle due to the rumors that incumbent Republican Pete Domenici is on his way to retirement despite his statements otherwise. In short, there are a number of reasons why one might believe (as many do) that Domenici will opt not to run again, opening up a strong pick-up opportunity for the Democrats. But if my post were not enough to convince you that something might be up with Sen. Domenici, perhaps this report from Roll Call's Mary Ann Akers (sorry, subscription required) might make you change your mind (h/t Wonkette).

Pajama Party ... or Not. We had a number of reports Friday that Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) was wandering the halls of Senate office buildings in his jammies.

Two staffers said they saw the Senator wearing "tartan" or "buffalo plaid" pajama bottoms and a "loose-fitting shirt." By the end of the day, one informant called to say she heard Domenici was walking around in his boxers. But by that point, we already had spoken to the Senator, who assured us, "These aren't pajamas! They're hunting pants!"

These are not the actions of someone who is tasked with running for reelection over the next two years as is Sen. Domenici, who is quoted as saying, "I'm still going to run again, and win again." Make no mistake: this is not a mere Ted Stevens wearing an Incredible Hulk tie, this is a Senator potentially ambling around the halls of Congress in only his underwear. If this isn't a borderline Jim Bunning moment, I don't know what is. And though Bunning was able to ride George W. Bush's long coattails to a narrow victory over a largely unknown state senator in 2004, Domenici will not likely have as much cover from the 2008 Republican nominee (regardless of who he is) given the more even partisan balance in New Mexico.

Had the netroots and the 50-state strategy been in place in 2004, that unknown senator would likely have been elected and Jim Bunning would be "resting" in an assisted-care facility right now.

Dan Mongiardo.  That's the unknown dude.  If I remember correctly, that race closed real quickly the last few days leading up to the election.  So yeah, I agree with your assessment.

The race had serious momentum, but since the DSCC didn't care about it because of the numbers, the late surge wasn't able to expand upon an infrastructure necessary to win. That race should have been the number #1 reason for Emanuel to invest early in expanding the playing field, but he was too busy explaining why Iraq wasn't a Democratic issue.

Emanuel or Schumer?

KY was yet another blown opportunity from the former DSCC head Jon Corzine.

My point was (hoping to be) just that the race was the best recent example for early investment going into the 2006 cycle.

I think his name was "Saddam Hussein's son" if I remember Bunning correctly.

What if they really were hunting pants? (none / 0)

I think you need more evidence.

Having seen thousands and thousands of hunters, I have never seen anyone wearing anything that could be confused with PJ's.

The only way it would make sense is if he were hunting pages.

That is even worse than the mental image I already had.

Saint Pete will win if he runs - (none / 0)

Laugh all you want but as long as Pete has a breath in his body and wants to run he will win.

As they say all politics are local and unless you understand NM politics you can speculate all you want and its totally meaningless.

Re: Saint Pete will win if he runs - (none / 0)

How about this: I don't understand NM politics, but I understand Virginia politics quite well - and just four months ago, there was no way in hell that George Allen could possibly lose. No way. Just no way. So maybe, just maybe, we've got a prayer of a chance against Pajama Pete.

Re: Saint Pete will win if he runs - (none / 0)

Allen was a lightening rod Pete ain't.

I'm a big Dem and would love to see him go but this state likes its incumbants and some strange rumor ain't enough to do him in -

Re: Is Pete Domenici Ready for Prime Time? (none / 0)

I live in Biloxi, MS, and I can say, I doubt that the Gulf Coast or New Orleans will ever build back to the same degree. You can STILL drive on 90 and see destroyed houses and parking lots where businesses used to be. Heck, I live about 100 yards away from buildings which have been gutted, whose owners I presume left them to be abandoned. Who's going to jump in to take over THAT bit of prime real estate? I don't know of many willing to take a risk that big...
