LA-2: Worse, Much Worse Than I Made It Sound

A few days ago I wrote about September 2, 2005.  That was the day William Jefferson comandeered a humvee to retrieve personal affects from his home as people were still being rescued from rooftops.  All told, Jefferson's escapade tied up one Hummer, a five ton truck and one rescue chopper.  Soon after, Nightline did a report on the incident, and it was worse, much worse, than I made it sound.  Take a look.

Jefferson is a prick.  This should be played for all of N.O.  I hope Carter wins.  Let this SOB go work on K Street, or better yet, go to jail.

that's "personal effects" (none / 0)

I really hope Carter wins. It's amazing to me that a guy like Jefferson still has some semblance of a machine behind him.

Jefferson is awful.  The CBC should get its ass kicked for support of corrupt shits like Jefferson, Wynn, and Alcee Hastings.

Re: Worse, Much Worse Than I Made It Sound (none / 0)

Alcee Hastings was acquitted in court and elected by the people in his district. Just because a bunch of lazy ass Congressmen from the 80s impeached him doesn't mean he's corrupt.

The vote for Hastings impeachment was about the same as the vote in favor of the Iraq War. And just as many shithead Senators read the evidence against Hastings as read the NIE on Iraq.

Maxine Waters goes from hero for supporting Ned Lamont to zero for standing by the CBC in about two seconds. Democrats need to take less extreme positions on their allies - their not saints or devils.

Jefferson, Wynn and Hastings and every Congressman have different records. Take them one at a time.

Re: Worse, Much Worse Than I Made It Sound (none / 0)

The vote in the House was 413-3.  242 of those votes came from Democrats.  The person who led impeachment charges was none other than incoming chairman of House Judiciary, John Conyers, also a member of the CBC.

Hastings was then  convicted by a Senate vote of 69-26.  A bunch of "lazy ass" congressmen and "shithead" senators?

Maybe he's served ably as a congressman from Florida but he certainly is not the Dem posterboy and definitely shouldn't have been rewarded as head of the Intel committee.

Jefferson and Hastings both took bribes.  Both are (or at least were) crooked.

Re: Worse, Much Worse Than I Made It Sound (none / 0)

I'm tired of John Conyers being trotted out like he's kryptonite when people criticize Alcee Hastings. Make your own case - don't stand behind John Conyers. Arlen Specter and Orin Hatch voted to acquit Hastings of the impeachment charges. Does that neutralize the magic Conyers defense or do Specter and Hatch need to hit a tanning salon to have cred in the case?

You said "The CBC should get its ass kicked" for supporting "shits" and now you've gone all tea party on me when I throw a little coarse language back in your face. Sorry to offend, me lord.

A federal district judge who reviewed the Hastings impeachment found that it did not constitute a fair trial. Unfortunately for Hastings the Supreme Court later ruled that impeachment trials are not reviewable. But the fact remains that a US District Court, after hearing the details of Hastings impeachment, found it to be an unfair trial.

And never forget he was acquitted in a court by a his a jury of his peers on the same charges.

If you haven't noticed - sometimes Congress passes things all the time by overwhelming margins not because they are hellbent on doing the right thing, but because a given thing is popular. 2/3 of the impeachment committee that actually heard the evidence in the case voted to acquit Hastings of the charges including Hatch, Specter, and Bingaman. I choose to trust their judgement, not the likes of Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms who voted to impeach in the full Senate but didn't HEAR THE EVIDENCE. And did I mention Hastings was acquitted in a court of law?

If you think Hastings isn't clean that's your right to think it. If you think you're going to start shooting blunderbuss accusations at the 'shits' in the CBC and not get called on it then you've got another thing coming.

Wynn is DLC thug but that doesn't make him a criminal. Let's make him a private citizen and elect Donna Edwards in '08.

Jefferson is the unnamed Representive in recent guilty pleas as taking bribes. He's under investigation. Let's elect Karen Carter and make former Rep. Jefferson irrelevant to the 110th Congress.

Hastings was acquitted in court. The Senate committee that actually heard the evidence against him voted by 2/3rds to acquit. He was impeached by the full Senate. A district court later ruled that trial was not fair because not all Senators viewed the evidence for and against impeachment.

They are three separate cases.

Lumping all three together comes suspiciously close to saying black Congresspeople are corrupt. I didn't see you throwing in Allen Mollohan or Jane Harman's AIPAC investigation or John Murtha's ABSCAM involvement. No ass kicking for them?

I'm a Democrat. I hate corruption. If you're going to make charges - hit your target. Blanket criticism of the CBC is weak. If you have specific criticism - bring it.

Wow.

Has anyone asked the Congressman how many of his constituents had to wait on their roofs an extra night in order for him to retrieve his laptop?

Why does that matter when his oppenent, "Ms. Ca-tah," supports bestiality and distrubution of bareback gay porn to kindergarteners? lol

I hate Jefferson with such a passion.  And to think he's a Harvard grad!

Harvard grad/ (none / 0)

Whatever.  I'll take someone who knows something over someone who has a piece of paper saying they know something every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Pedigree degrees are about perception, not knowledge.

Jefferson lives at 1922 Marengo?  Ha!  We went trick-or-treating on his block.  Cheap bastid, I don't remember anybody handing out the kind of cash he has on hand.

Is this clip from months ago and you just discovered it, or is it recent?  This seemed to confirm coverage that's been done in the past.

Not that that makes it any less damning - but it's not anything new, is it?
