The One Where I Introduce Myself

Thanks to the whole MyDD crew for inviting me in and to the political world at large for making sure no real news occurred on my first day. Helpful. By way of brief personal background -- until recently, I was on staff with former Virginia governor Mark Warner. And before that, I spent just under five years on Capitol Hill under Rep. Henry Waxman in his Government Reform Committee office. Now relocated to Brooklyn, I'm shifting a bit from day-to-day electoral politics to hands-on creative work: writing, editing, taking pictures and experimenting with other visual media, and hopefully doing some filmmaking. That's the plan, at least.

As a weekend blogger at MyDD, here are a few of the topics I'll likely tackle: what's wrong and what's right with the American political system; labor, past and present; building the progressive movement; gay people and other gay things; and legislative goings-ons around technology, information, and the media. I’ll probably bag on Congress some, thought that's sometimes like shooting fish in a barrel. (During the network neutrality debate, Vint Cerf -- the creator of the TCP/IP protocols on which the Internet runs -- found the state of tech understanding in DC so dismal that he was considering making a comic book on the global network and handing it out on Capitol Hill. It might be time to consider a similar approach to explaining Sunni, Shi'ite, and Hezbollah. Featuring a map o' the Middle East for good measure.)

I'd like to explore how we can win hearts and minds and shore up weak opinions, strongly held by creating progressive narratives. I’ll mostly leave numbers and stats to Chris and others. And I'd like to experiment with video.

It's an honor and privilege to be here. And yes, I am Jerome Armstrong.

Welcome Nancy! Glad to hear that you'll be staying on full time. Your posts covering PA during the election were fantastic.

Re: The One Where I Introduce Myself (none / 0)

Haha.  I remember him doing a similar briefing for a House panel along with Lessig.  Glad to see so much has progressed since 2004, when it comes to the Congress's understanding of how the net really works.

Welcome Nancy. I look forward to your postings.

I am happy to see a female voice on the front page of MyDD.

Re: The One Where I Introduce Myself (none / 0)

Oh, Lessig -- was he doing the Powerpoint thing?

(I had him for two courses in law school; he's one of the more significant mentors I've had.)

I am thrilled to have Nancy here as a FPer.  I had the opportunity to deal with her in her prior professional capacities, and she is a great voice that deserves this wider audience.

Re: The One Where I Introduce Myself (none / 0)

Welcome! Always nice to hear a new voice (new to me anyway)

I would be most interested in how it was working in Waxman's office and your opinions on how the investigations will go.

I love the idea of a comic book on Iraq for some of the idiots, can we start with Reyes?

I like your idea of 'policy comic books'. A lot.

Re: The One Where I Introduce Myself (none / 0)

Hi Nancy....looking forward to reading a liberal woman's posts!  Am just a lowly blog reader from Louisiana, a public high-school teacher, but mydd.com has been one of my must-read daily blogs for a long time now.  So, soon after this last election, I posted my first question here....why don't congress critters work a five day week in Congress like the rest of American workers do at their jobs?  It was patiently explained to me by some men here that these congress critters needed to spend the time back home with their constitutents, that being home was part of the job.  Oh.  Soon after that, our newly elected Dem leaders announced a new policy to expect their critters to work almost a 5 days a week there, just as American workers do.  Hmmm.

It will be so nice to have a woman around on the weekends....looking forward to it, believe me.  Ann

Nancy,

Did you volunteer at the Iowa Caucuses in 2004?  I think I may have met you and a friend of yours in a bar in Davenport, Iowa.  Cool to see that you will be posting here now.

Re: The One Where I Introduce Myself (none / 0)

I'm glad to see that Jerome is going to get of his behind and do some real work on the weekends.  Historically, Jermone has been a slacker on the weekends.  So, it's great to see that he created a new pseudonym that will post mostly on the weekend.  And that made up bio looks great--photos and everything.

WELCOME! (none / 0)

New blood, fresh ideas, some new topics, and five year in Waxman's Government Reform Committee office!  (I was within 4 or 5 blocks of being in his district 1992-94.) What's not to like?

And, oh yes, you're a woman.  Somehow I thought the sky would fall before MyDD got a female front-pager.

Has anyone looked outside?
