Open Letter to Howard Dean

Dear Dr. Chair Governor Dean,

Thanks for sticking to your guns with the 50 State Strategy that resulted in new business cards being printed for Madame Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Harry Reid.

I am writing today to join with Harry Reid, Max Baucus, Jon Tester, Jeff Bingaman, Byron Dorgan, Kent Conrad, Maria Cantwell, Tim Johnson, Ben Nelson and nearly 50 members of the House of Representatives in respectfully asking you to give Denver the 2008 Democratic Party Convention.

Thanks for your consideration.

Re: Open Letter to Howard Dean (none / 0)

Open letters should also be positive. I'm confident Dean will make the right decision, but reminding him how many people realize Denver is the only option for the 50 State Strategy makes sense.

Re: Open Letter to Howard Dean (3.00 / 6)

It isn't New York City.

It highlights the fact that Democrats aren't just on the coasts.

It catapults the western strategy.

It helps the Latino outreach.

It shows of 50 State successes.

It gives Dean an excuse for Schweitzer to deliver the keynote.

It has a high altitude and much like the summer olympics in Mexico City, the thinner air will prevent any speaker from breaking Clinton's 1988 record for long-windedness.

It isn't New York City.

I believe that Red Rocks wasn't included in Denver's bid proposal because they thought it would be unfair to the other cities.

You say "It isn't NYC" like that's a positive.

But really, I'm sure Denver has just as many interesting things to do. Really. Yeah.

Er....uh...okay.

Re: Uh (none / 0)

We could go with NYC and have people reporters out doing interesting things that have nothing to do with the convention or go the Pace Picante route:

Pace Picante sauce recently rediscovered the popularity of the New York theme by bringing back its long-running ad campaign from the 1980s.

In ads that ran for a decade, Southwestern cowboys made fun of people who bought salsa that came from New York City, an unlikely source for authentic salsa. [...]

"There are some predisposed assumptions from our core users about where a good salsa would not come from and that would be the Northeast," says Foley. "It's like saying, 'He's the guy who gets his bagels from San Antonio.' "

The ads run nationally but have a heavier presence west of the Mississippi, where the bulk of Pace consumers live. "That's where real hard-core Pace loyalists are," says Caporimo. "They bathe in this stuff. For them, it's an art form and part of the culture."

Dean needs to grab the west by the bottle!

Uh...yeah. In Denver, Colorado being noted for "authentic" Tex-Mex. Then we can all go a line steppin with faux "cowboys".

And when you're done, you can get in a car and drive somewhere. And when you are done you can drive somewhere else. Whooo and a hoo.

Well, given you find eating salsa "exciting", I think we are two different vavelengths on the topic. I prefer attractive women, decent alternative music, and good alcohol.

That being said, fair enough.

Since when are we choosing based on a nice vacation spot? Shit, let's go to Club Med if we're concerned with exciting extra-curricular activities.

Maybe attendees should just get the job done.  There's an entire world outside of NYC, and it's actually worth seeing.  Once in a while at least.

Why Not Vegas? (none / 0)

I must be missing something obvious here about Vegas.

I agree with the idea behind Denver but then why not Las Vegas?

Nevada is on the caucus schedule, it's Harry Reid's turf. The surrounding states flock to Vegas for "Family Fun" since it has been branded as a "Family Destination." America will see that Democrats are the "party with morals" since we picked the place to park your kids while a little innocent gambling away of the family fortune takes place.

America doesn't want to get serious about any moral obligations around the world--they want to party! So why not give them the biggest show on Earth? Are you ready for some football?!

Whomever our nominee is we could have Cirque du Soleil spinning around doing the splits, funny costumes galore, girls spinning around high up in the sky--while the nominee is giving the speech!

That would have put Kerry over the top instead of his manufactured salute from the ship!

It would have beat the RNC's pulpit hands down.

Big population, plenty of working class blues, plenty of Hotel space and convention halls. High class restaurants, booze galore, it's the working class woman's last stop. Think of the 2.95 buffets! The delegates don't even have to show up to the floor to get in the way of the show. They'll have extra time to visit the pawn shops after strategy sessions at the tables.

The speeches themselves will get better coverage by the network execs just as a way of saying thanks. We could do the speeches from various Vegas historic destinations to keep the ratings high. Like, at the In-and-Out burger (think of these advertising bonanzas for the networks!), or at the top of the Stratosphere with martinis aglow. There could be exclusives with delegates--real one on one stuff--at the Mustang Ranch.

The candidates could show a step of unity at the end with a whole chorus of showgirls kicking in unison! This could be the greatest show on Earth that would convince the networks to show gavel to gamble coverage and show the world that the Democrats are serious about winning over American values.

I must be missing something. If it's about cummunicating with immigrants, Denver is a good pick, but Vegas could be a REAL revival.

Re: Open Letter to Howard Dean (3.00 / 0)

I was raised in Denver, though I'm now in Los Angeles.  I have to lend a strong "Here, here!" to the call for the first Denver convo since 1908.

I do want to add a word of warning to carousing conventioneers...be careful when drinking at altitude.

This isn't going to be like drinking in Boston, LA, or any other convention host city.

ug... i can't stand denver (none / 0)

i visited colorado a few years ago and didn't enjoy it at all.  i found the ever-present cameras on every street corner very disturbing... big brother is everywhere there, even the public parks (yea, that freaked me out).  the people were rude as hell.  i mean, if i could even get one of them to look me in the eye on the street it was a miracle.  seriously, rudest mother-effers i've ever encountered.  hated it and vowed to never go back.

that being said, i don't dispute the wisdom of holding the convention there.  it's a good fit for the 50SS and i think it would make a lot of sense. if the convention goes to denver, i'll suck up my sour grapes and go.  but i'll probably spend my entire time holed up in a bar somewhere.  oh wait, you can't even smoke anywhere in denver, either.  gah.  see what i suffer through for democracy???  lol

I love New York. Have the convention in Denver. (3.00 / 2)

As a New Yorker, who thinks the city is a great place to visit, to hold conventions in general, etc., I think it would be counterproductive to have it here.  New York's already on our team.  There are literally no Republicans here besides Bloomberg and the staff at Fox News.  And Hillary Clinton.  (kidding!  little joke!)

We've already got New York in the bag.  But the entire Southwest is on the verge of tipping blue.  Holding the convention there can only help give it a push.  Give Bill Richardson a high-profile speech (if not the VP spot), and we could have a few more blue states on our hands.
