New Hampshire is now Deep Blue

The online frontpage of the NH Union Leader is classic. Just read through their blog of what happened tonight in New Hampshire. Democrats just took over the entire state. Everything, even the State House.

Here are the money quotes:

Victories by Gov. John Lynch, Carol Shea-Porter in the 1st Congressional District and Paul Hodes in the 2nd District marked the first time since 1912 that Democrats were elected to three of the state's top five seats.

Democrats have picked up at least six state Senate seats. A 16-8 domination by Republicans has swung at least to 14-10 in favor of the Democrats.

The Associated Press reports that the Democrats have clinched control of the New Hampshire House for the first time since 1911.

And the Republican response:

"To be honest with you, this probably is a historic moment," said state GOP Chairman Wayne Semprini. "But everything is cyclical."
Yea right, enjoy the next 95 years in the minority NH Republicans-- it'll likely take that long for the Republican Party to get it's shit together in the northeast after Bush-Rove are done with it.

Anyone hear about Tester yet?

That Blog Was Really Cool (none / 0)

They had all this stuff they were writing about, state leg races, etc., including the analysis that said Carol Shea-Porter was going to win.  And then someone stepped in and wrote (paraphrase) "well, you know, all this analysis is fine, but she's like 5,000 votes behind," or whatever.  But the thing was, the analysis was so fine-grained, that I said to myself, "I'd rather have that analysis going for us, and wait for the gap to close than be in the GOP's shoes."

And, sure enough....

A big "thank you!" to whoever tossed out the link that got me there.

For some reason, I initially read that to say, "Yea right, enjoy the next 95 years in the minority, assholes."

Well, my bad.

Re: New Hampshire is now Deep Blue (none / 0)

NH went blue in 2004 when it elected a moderate Dem gov (John Lynch) and went for Kerry. I voted for the first time this year for Paul Hodes (and helped to re-elect Lynch) from the NH-02 district. Obviously when we won (and NH-01 unexpectedly went blue despite the Dem being behind by 10 pts in the most recent pre-election polls), it felt amazing. If this is what participating in democracy is like, I can't wait until 2008!

Re: New Hampshire is now Deep Blue (none / 0)

Moderate Republicans are really a dying breed after tonight.  Not sure the Repubs will get the message and instead of mellowing their stance, might turn harder to the right.  Especially if the Club for Growth has anything to say about it.

Looks like the NE's and Mid-Atlantic's experiment with Republicans is over.  Even Leach lost in IA-02.

CNN pulled the Yellowstone county's results from their site, butting it back down to 0% precincts reporting.  Something seems fishy in MT.  Burns has gained nearly 8,000 votes with just a handful of precincts recently.

Could the GOP by altering the count to retain their majority?

Patience, Grasshopper...in 2008, whether it's a rematch with Shaheen or being roadkill to the Lynch juggernaut, he's going down. In 2010, Judd Gregg will suddenly decide to retire, and--Jiminy  Jillickers!--Dems in NH now have a bench! There will half a dozen serious candidates to step in.

What's going on in MT?  I'm still trying to figure it out.

Re: New Hampshire is now Deep Blue (none / 0)

Illinois is the same way... We took over the last bastion of the GOP in State Government with Alex G.  winning the treasury and all incumbents winning.  I hated voting for Blago, but I like Pat Quinn so I forced my self too instead of Whitney.  Good to see he got over 5%.

Who's Lt Gov to Blago? (none / 0)

I mean, the Illini might as well start finding ways to dump him before he becomes a real sore.

Is the Lt Gov tolerable?  If so, pull the trigger and spin it as more proof that Dems demand accountability.

Welcome to blue New England, New Hampshire!

I wish Shays could have been taken out, but at least in CT the Dems seem to have taken a Supermajority in the legislature!

Re: New Hampshire is now Deep Blue (none / 0)

I lived in NH from 1989-1993. I loved it. And the politics are, um, unique. :-)

I am thrilled with the results, especially the huge wave in the NH house. Did I read correctly that we now have a 29-6 advantage or something?

Anyway, even after 15 years, I still think Jean Shaheen is one of the best politicians I've ever seen or heard. I left NH right before she became governor. I would love to see her in the Senate. She would be fantastic.

Best of luck to all the Granite state Dems.

Go New Hampshire! (none / 0)

So glad and proud to be from the Granite State today...
I figured we'd get NH-02, but I'm glad my own rep made it! A big step in the right direction...for our whole state.
