I wouldn't get too carried away. The voters wanted change and they got it. Now the Dems have to perform.

As long as the Dems stay away from the conventional wisdom of the punditocracy and stay firm for their principles they can win again in 2008. That means holding this Administration accountable. Investigate the decision making and abuse of power that lead to the disaster in Iraq.

IMO this was a repudiation of Bush and the wingnuts and their abuse of power. This was also a repudiation of the Rahm "Centrist" and Repub-lite model. Many of Rahm's handpicked candidates that he lavished with money lost. This was an affirmation of the grassroots/netroots and their candidates that stood on principle, accountability and not being beholden to corporate interests.

Its not too early to start getting prepared for 2008. A clear focus on winning the remainder of the north east, mid-west and mountain west. Getting a strong Presidential candidate without the baggage of supporting the Iraq occupation, a clear plan to withdraw from Iraq and bringing stability to the middle east. A candidate with a message of economic populism and libertarian positions on social issues. The battle to rid the Dem party of the DC establishment "appeasers" without any courage of conviction.

Families with Children went from 40-60...to near parity: 49-51.  That's it right there.

How long until we get the "If only white Protestant men could vote, we would have won!" talking point from the Repuglicans?

Two stats that stood out for me as a gay hispanic:

Latino voters:  69% Democrat
gay voters:  24% Republican

I am sorry, but almost one in four gay people voting GOP is disgusting.  Latinos made me proud and came home and gays are great at 74% Democratic.  

However, I just shake my head about the one in four gay brother or sister who votes for a party that would send us to the camps.

The MoE on the jewish vote for this poll is so astronomical as to make any comment on it unrealistic.  The MoE for this poll is more than 3%.  The Number of people polled who self-identified as jewish?  Less than 3%.  

Even a 50 point swing from the 2004 exit polls on the jewish vote would be statistically insignificant.  

The Latino and Gay margins are more interesting; and the Native American question is also very interesting, since you can track the NA vote by county, or at least the non-Urban Indian vote, the vote on the Rez.

Let's remember that Jews and Latinos are two groups that the Republicans have been actively targeting since Bush took office.  

And they failed.  Welcome home, mensches and muchachas!

Jewish Democrats also did well as candidates. Six new Jewish Democrats won House seats and two were elected to the Senate. They are Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona, Yarmouth in Kentucky, Cohen in Memphis, Kegen in Wisconsin, Hodes in New Hampshire and Klein in Florida. Ben Cardin of Maryland and Bernie Sanders in Vermont join nine other Jewish Democrats in the Senate. Poor Arlen Specter is the only Jewish GOP Senator and I suspect he'll join his brethren on the other side of the aisle pretty soon. For all the  GOP propaganda about a Jewish drift to the right, this is a rude surprise!

Americans under 30 turned out at an estimated 24% rate this year, better than in 2002 and 1998.  Remember by age group, the youth vote is the only one Kerry won (as opposed to statistically tying) in 2004.

the American Jewish community seems to be trending Republican overall.  Jews have fallen to the Democrats' 2nd best voting block.  African-Americans are #1.
