Final Google Bomb Update 11/6

So this is it.  We all hit the polls tomorrow, hopefully we've managed to educate a few voters along the way.  This has, for the most part, been incredibly successful, with no response of note from the right while getting coverage from Hardball, CNN, and the New York Times twice, including today (hat tip Sprinkles).  It's been amazing to see this level of specific coordination and cooperation from the diaspora of Dem blogs, made all the more impressive because we pretty much did this on the fly.

We've learned quite a bit about how to choose effective articles, both in terms of proving our point and getting them to the top.  We learned that (unsurprisingly) the arguments of our opponents weren't particularly impressive.  And most importantly, we got a taste of what the netroots can do with a bit of organization.  This project is just a drop in the bucket, but imagine what happens in 2008 when we're ready ahead of time to roll out this and a dozen other projects.  We take the world by storm, yet again.  I know that I've been particularly proud every time I've had the chance to explain the project to people, and particularly to explain why it's so important.  I've never once gotten a negative reaction, and almost always found people to be desperately excited that someone is finally fighting back hard.  So keep your heads down and work hard through the finish line, and good luck to everyone tomorrow.

You can track the Googlebomb project here, and as always, tell me if you find different results.

That just looks like a massive and total success to me. Thanks so much for your work. This project probablty resulted in about 50,000 voter contacts. Fantastic!

Seconded...

Mojo may not mean as much here as on the Big Orange, but put up a tip jar so we can all show you some love.

awesome, especially for a first try (none / 0)

Think of what we can do with this in 2008!

Seriously.  If we were able to do this in 2 weeks we could cycle through 7 or 8 new sets of links from primary day to election day.  By the end practically the whole top ten could be relevant links.

So happy to see my pet one in the top 10, and that last poll showing Shaw (R) losing badly, hopefully not an outlier.

Well, one last bomb for Shaw!  Bye whore!

Great work...and an interesting proof of concept.

Pretty much all the long cited articles have moved up to top-10 positions.

Some took longer than others; I seem to to recall the PA articles not being up high after only a few days or a week or so, but eventually they trickled up.

Hey, it's the 'trickle-up theory!'

Re: Final Google Bomb Update 11/6 (none / 0)

Yes, let's keep pressing our online advantage over the GOP to 2008 and beyond.  I think we'll continue to dominate the Internet until the GOP starts having an honest online discussion of their values.  Oddly, I think I would be relieved if the GOP does start developing a netroots, as better policy is sure to be the result of honest analysis.  I'm not holding my breath, though.

FYI, I've also done a few more automated rankings like this, but haven't bothered posting them, as it's just be noise compared to Lucas's signal.  But just let it be known that there is a way to track these things in an automated fashion for good trendlines, if this is ever desired in the future.

I sure haven't forgotten about that.  Next time around, that'll be a key piece of the puzzle for sure.

NH-02 (none / 0)

I think the Charlie Bass Googlebomb was a success even if the story went behind a subscriber firewall - which is different that a true "dead link." In today's short attention span world, I think it got the point across. If you just saw the search results, you got smacked in the face with a great headline:

Union Leader - Top aide to Bass resigns - Wednesday, Sep. 27, 2006
Charlie Bass resigned yesterday after admitting he used a government computer to post misleading messages on liberal Web sites.

The excerpt is even wilder! Charlie Bass resigned?! Nuts! :)

Anyhow, I think a headline and excerpt like that are about as good as you could ever hope for from a Google hit. Sure, it would have been nice if the article had stayed free, but I'll definitely take this. In fact, having just the excerpt means that people didn't see the part where Bass apologized and accepted responsibility. So maybe just the excerpt "worked" better.

Also, the Union Leader is a very conservative, Bushist paper, so the fact that they were the source makes it even more likely that this story might have had an impact.

Re: NH-02 (none / 0)

I called it a dead link because it got archived, not because of the signup aspect.  So yeah you have to sign up, but it's also in a different place.  Regardless, it clearly worked cause it got to the top.

Good work!  We've got the pattern down.  Let's keep up the momentum bub.  I'm in for the long term duration.
