UPDATED: Howard Dean birthday/DNC contribution ideas

UPDATE: Please see my new diary for the final plan. And thanks for making this a Recommended Diary! :-)

For the last couple days several ideas have been bantered about on DailyKos (and elsewhere, no doubt) regarding how to thank Howard Dean and the new, improved DNC for putting the 50 State Strategy into motion, and showing earlier-than-expected success with the 2006 election victories. Then, of course, today we learn James Carville thinks Dean has done such a great job that he should be replaced by Harold Ford. So, in order to say "Thanks, Howard!" and "F.U., James!" simultaneously, because we are efficient like that, we hope to organize a birthday gift to Dr. Dean in the form of massive donations to the DNC to coincide with his birthday next Friday. Think in terms of the roses we inundated Senator Boxer with on Valentine's Day 2005. I'm crossposting this on MyDD as there's great support for Dean here as well, plus I needed an excuse to finally post a diary after being registered and lurking so long. Heh.

The plans, such as they are, are in Extended.

First, I must stress that none of these ideas were mine. But so many are flying around that I thought it would be helpful to try to coordinate them somewhat. I certainly don't expect that everyone will follow them to the letter, that's just asking too much!

So far, the only thing everyone seems agreed upon is that we want to make the DNC contributions in time for Dr. Dean's birthday. The amounts and methods of delivery just differ. So far, proposed methods are:

1) Send birthday cards to Dean at the DNC office by snail mail, with check or money order enclosed;

2) Donate via The Bat, which someone started on their own and which has already raised over $4,000;

3) Donate via an ActBlue page.

Proposed amounts are:

1) $20.06, to signify the successes of this week;

2) $20.08, in anticipation of even greater success in 2008;

3) Any amount with 50 cents tacked on, in honor of the great 50 State Strategy

Just my .02: my personal favorite is a birthday card - made from recycled paper of course ;-) - with a check/MO donation. The beauty of this is it will make a big visual impact, good for PR purposes. However, this would rule out being able to put it on a credit card, and we couldn't time it so that all the cards got there right on his birthday, both of which could be accomplished via Web donations. However, I think if we just start mailing them tomorrow and over the next few days, they'll arrive throughout the week, and that would be fine.

I also prefer just adding on 50 cents to any amount. This makes it appealing to those who are tapped out from the past election cycle, but can still scrape up 5 or 10 bucks from someplace. And if you can afford more, great! Just add another .50 to it. And if you genuinely can't afford anything, just send a thank you note! I'm sure it will be appreciated just as much.

Honestly, though, as long as it pretty much coincides with Dr. Dean's birthday, I don't think the delivery method or amount matter a great deal. Naturally, the more we all try to do the same thing, the bigger impact it will have, but I don't think it's worth bickering over or going into major planning. (Mainly because I'm lazy, disorganized, and don't really feel like doing it. Heh.)

What say you? Please comment with feedback.

And buy a Democracy Bond if you don't already have one! If you do have one then you can always increase the amount it's for too ;)

Re: Howard Dean birthday/DNC contribution ideas (none / 0)

I would vote for a heavy push for the Democracy Bonds program on top of the $20.06 donations. It shows a committed support for Dean's strategy, and can be established in any amount.

I wrote a diary about it last night that went nowhere, so I'm glad this one made it up.

Recommended.

Excellent idea.  I hope this gets taken up in the center column, both here at at Kos.

I will send a check inside a B-Day card, but in addition will be upping my monthly contribution.

I think that thanking Howard Dean is a great idea.  I also think that replacing him with Harold Ford is a dumb idea.  They say only wild animals eat their young. At the moment that we are victorious, let's not descend to the depths of wild animals.  Let's give Howard Dean a vote of thanks.  It was a great strategy.  And let's leave him where he is, as Democratic Party Chairman.

Here is my birthday present to Dean - a pink slip.  If Carville wants him gone than goodbye Howie.  I would give the DNC keys to a brand new Ford and let the good times begin.

If you doubt Carville's genius than watch the War Room or his firm in Our Brand Is Crisis (fuck you Morales).

How about sending "Happy Birthday to Howard!" cards to Schumer, Emmanuel, whoever else seems appropriate, writing on the inside flap:  "In honor of Dr. Dean's birthday, and his wise advocacy and implementation of a 50-state strategy that is already bearing fruit, I have contributed the amount of xx.xx -- to the Democratic National Committee."  (Or, of course, words of one's own to that effect.)

Sen. Charles Schumer @ DSCC, 430 S. Capitol St. S.E., Washington, DC  20001

Rep. Rahn Emman @ DCCC, 430 S. Capitol St. S.W., Washington, DC  20001

James Carville   james@carville.info

The addresses are from the DC phone book. That's the best contact information I could find for Carville on short notice.

I posted a diary there Sunday linked to this thread.

I thought this was a great idea to show our support for Dean and I wanted to help spread the word.  The additional idea is from no3reed at Booman Tribune.

Carville's dumb suggestion (none / 0)

Can someone tell me how the chair of the DNC is chosen? What is Carville's official role these days, and who is he to offer Dean's job to Ford? Is this just Rove-ish gameplaying? All kidding aside, it bodes very ill for the future of the party, and at a minimum reveals who's coopted who in the Carville-Matalin alliance. Is there a way to just show him the door?

Anyone who thinks Ford is good for the Democrats should check the op-ed "The Third Man" in the 11-9 issue of the Memphis Flyer. Let's leave the corruption scandals to the Republicans.
