NC-13 Where in the World are Vernon Robinson's Donors? AK-01

Poor George Benesch.  Thousands of miles away from NC-13, George lies awake at night in the midnight sun of Anchorage, Alaska, worring about a flotilla of tortilla wielding mariachi players paddling their Spanish Armada of inner tubes and 55 gallon drums from the Baja Peninsula to the Alaska Peninsula.

George, a retired attorney, is fighting us down here so he doesn't have to fight them up there.  George fears hordes of Central Americans, emboldened by the fact that global warming has increased average temperatures in Alaska by several degrees, setting sail for the newly temperate shores of Alaska.  The fact that Alaska is closer to Russia than it is to Mexico has little bearing on the perceived threat to this United State of the Bering Strait.

The chosen battlefield is NC-13, an hour's drive east of Vernon Robinson's home, not the Portage Glacier an hour's drive south of Anchorage, which has receded so much due to global warming that it can not be seen from the Visitor Center that provided views of the glacier when first built.  Perhaps the fact that Greenland's ice-sheet is melting faster may take the heat off of this week's town of the month: Anchorage, Alaska,.

oil slick photo from commondreams.orgExxon Valdez, Yes, Juan Valdez, No.  George would rather have hydrocarbon slicks than Hispanics.  That is why he sent $104,500 to right-wingers in the 2006 FEC election cycle, notably Tom Tancredo, Jim "Minuteman" Gilchrist, Bob Barr's Leadership Fund, Volunteer PAC, Latino Alliance, Minuteman PAC, Katherine Harris, Randy "Minuteman" Graf, Rick Santorum, John Spencer (against Hillary Clinton) and, Vernon Robinson ($2,350).  Of the 206 contributions recorded by the FEC from George's zip code, 193 were from George.  Once again it appears that Vernon Robinson has tapped into the corroded pipeline of irrational fear.

Since Vernon Robinson sees fit to leave hateful flyers on my doorstep I started this blog feature, courtesy of Google Maps, to see where the hate money is coming from.

Brad Miller (none / 0)

I met Brad and his campaign manager last night at a non-political NC Museum of Natural Sciences event that included an astronaut and a blend of scientists and local leaders.

Brad is focussed and deliberate.

Re: Brad Miller (3.00 / 1)

That's good to know. I worry a little about this race (emphasis on little), since no polling has been done. I'm wondering if Vermin's ads are having any effect.

Polls (none / 0)

I hadn't seen any yet.  I imagine the real danger is not to be found in polls but in a straight ticket vote without a strong Democratic GOTV on election day.

Maybe someone who knows more than me can jump in on this?

Re: Polls (3.00 / 1)

Well the district was drawn for Brad, so straight ticket voting SHOULD be OK. Remember, this was one of the few districts that went for Bush in 2000 and then for Kerry in '04 (albeit narrowly).

But you're right, we need a strong GOTV effort. I witnessed first-hand the Wake county (and state) Dems GOTV effort in '04, and it wasn't pretty (I no longer live in NC). Hundreds of people wanted to give rides but many (including me) were never called. The volunteer organization was a mess and not coordinated very well. In addition, there did not seem to be many boots on the ground in each precinct, trying to get people to the polls.

But I noticed that one of the county Dems I talked to afterwards (who was skeptical about the ability to coordinate GOTV so that we could keep track of who voted on election day) was one of the people that produced a slick voter canvassing and GOTV video that the DNC distributed a while back. So maybe they've got their act together now.

Re: Polls (3.00 / 1)

This is just untrue.

There was a significantly stronger effort in 2004 than there had ever been before, and another one is scheduled this year.

Please don't spread inaccuracies based on anectdoctal information.  If people had wanted to vlunteer, all they needed to do was show up.

We had people in most every precinct, and MoveOn or civil rights groups covered the others.

I was a campaign manager for a state-wide candidate in 2004, and that was the best operation in the state.  I'm now a COunty Vice Chair, and it's gotten better still.

Don't complain.  Organize.

Re: Polls (3.00 / 1)

1. Everything I stated is true based on what I saw.

2. People did show up. Wake County had no where for them to go. NC Dem was slightly better, but still very disorganized. I would imagine they are much better now with Jerry Meek in charge.

3. Just because you have people in a precinct does not mean there was a good GOTV effort. Let's see, how well did Kerry and Erskine do in '04 compared to Bush and Burr?

4. If it's gotten better still, doesn't that indicate that there were problems before that needed fixing?

5. I didn't complain. I stated what I saw. I do organize. I am organizing my home precinct as we speak and organizing the GOTV effort in an area that has never had one. But thank you for assuming that I am doing nothing but complaining.

6. I was in a precinct in Raleigh in 2004 that normally votes about 70% Dem. We had roughly 1200 votes out of 2500 voters. THAT is a terrible GOTV operation. And like I said, I hope and imagine that things are much better now.

Re: NC-13 Where in the World are Vernon Robinson's (3.00 / 1)

They call him the "black Jesse Helms."  Isn't that an oxymoron?  Wouldn't the "black Jesse Helms" hate white people?

Re: NC-13 Where in the World are Vernon Robinson's (3.00 / 1)

No, he would be a black man that hates black people.
Which seems like an apt description.

Oxymoronic (none / 0)

The set of people that he doesn't hate is very small.  It includes a subset of rich white conservatives who are amused by him and a subset of retirees who are scared by him.  On second thoughts he probably hates them all too.

Re: NC-13 Where in the World are Vernon Robinson's (none / 0)

that the good people of NC 13th are too smart to contribute to a lying bigot.

Brad co-founded and co-chairs the newly established and bi-partisan, Community College Caucus which promotes adult education, job training and continues to be the "engine that drives economic growth in America".

Seeking to protect the poor and disadvantaged, Brad Miller has enacted legislation to protect consumers from predatory lending.

Because he's concerned about the suppression of scientific facts that the right find "offensive", he's also on the House Committe on Science.

Brad Miller is not only a good representative for NC and all Americans, he's a good man who doesn't deserve the nasty lying ravings of the vermin lunatic!
