Andy Stern In Philadelphia Today

I'll be there. In fact, I'll be giving Stern's intro. Here is the location:

Fergie's Pub
1214 Sansom Street
6 p.m.
Upstairs

See you there.

[Matt here] Update: I went to the event last night in DC. Stern's a smart guy. My favorite wonky point that he makes is that more higher education, while a good thing, is an individual and not a structural improvement in the economy. If you provide more college educations, that doesn't do anything for the 50 million jobs in transportation, cleaning, etc. Lots of politicians like to say that college education is the key to opportunity. That's only true for individuals; for most of the economy, higher wages and better infrastructure is the key to opportunity.

SEIU chief. (none / 0)

Not adverse to working with republicans if he thinks they can better achieve union goals but sees that working with dems is a better proposition generally.

how much of that do you think is positioning? (none / 0)

From our experience here in New York, union members respect their union's endorsement but don't want to be told how to vote.  I wonder if Stern is trying to drive home the point that he's making an endorsement in the best interest of the union so it carries more weight.

Be interested to hear how much he talks about the need to raise the minimum wage in Congress and the states.  Sounds like he talks about it, I'm wondering how central it is.

Kos Diary re:Delaware (none / 0)

Apologies for being off-topic, but I did not see an open thread on the front page.

Since this is a Philly blog, there is a diary on Kos concerning a stroke suffered by a GOP incumbent and the minimization of it in the neighboring state of Delaware.

Thought you all might have more influence locally to find out more info.
