It would be one thing is Ellen Tauscher was really a conservative Democrat, who actually took positions and made statements based upon a genuine disagreement over policy with progressive Democrats.
But a look at her voting record demonstrates that, with the exception of a couple of issues, Tauscher is clearly a mainstream liberal.
She's solidly pro-choice on abortion.
She voted AGAINST the constitutuonal amendment banning Same Sex marriage.
She voted AGAINST making the PATRIOT Act permanent. In fact, she has an 87% rating from the ACLU!
She voted in FAVOR oif raising CAFE standards and AGAINST drilling in ANWR -- and has a 100% rating from the League of Conservation Voters. She also voted AGAINST CAFTA.
On "family" issues, she's rated 0% by the Christian Coalition!
And the list goes on and on. She does have a few blackmarks on her record {such as her support for the odious bankruptcy bill), but overall she has a mostly liberal voting record in Congress. So Tauscher's recent attacks on the "progressives" in the Democratic party are NOT based upon ideology. They are based upon her inability to embrace her true liberal self, and call herself what she is.
Ellen Tausher is a liberal. She can try to deny it. She can pretend otherwise. But she is a liberal. Or a "progressive" if you prefer that term. For her to attack other liberals or progressives is, in my view, a means to advance her political career in a future statewide race in California, and not because she actually believes the crap she is spewing.
So, this makes her worse than a conservative Democrat. It makes her insincere, and someone who needs to be drummed out of the party. It would be one thing if she was actually a conservative Democrat who was at odds with the bulk of the party, or who had to protect herself in a marginal district. But, she's not.
She is pretending to be conservative for her own selfish political reasons, and could care less about the impact that has on the party as a whole. She needs to go.
UPDATE: Oh, and Tauscher, this year, received a %93 rating from the AFL-CIO. [Lifetime 79% rating]
