Use It Or Lose It: Last Call

As Matt and David have noted in their fundraising calls this morning, today is the last, best day to give to netroots candidates this cycle. We are asking you to give until it hurts on the netroots page. And so, we are also going to ask ultra-safe Democrats to give until it hurts today. Take part in the Use It Or Lose It Program, one last time.

This week, the people you have called have given at least $2.25M to the Democratic cause in the House. Absolutely amazing--your calls are being heard by ultra-safe Democrats around the country. For this final day, I put together a special Use It Or Lose It resource page, which shows how much has been raised, who you can thank for their donations, media coverage of the program, and statements of support from House Democrats. You can also go directly to the main Use It Or Lose It action page, and start making calls to ultra-safe Democrats in your home state.

So far today, you have giving $60,000 directly to candidates on the netroots page. Our ultra-safe Democrats need to give until it hurts too. This is the last day of the Use It Or Lose It action campaign, so make it happen now. At this point, just ask Democrats to give whatever they can, and give it today.

Oh, and Marty Meehan, with over $4,000,000 cash on hand, has endorsed an editorial in the Lowell Sun that referred to the Use It Or Lose It campaign as "a nasty shakedown by rotten political scoundrels." Nice. I know someone who will never become a Senator in Massachusetts.

Forget Senator... Marty Meehan needs to see a hardcore SIGNIFICANT primary challenge in 2008.  This bit of Disloyalty needs to be punished.

Re: Use It Or Lose It: Last Call (none / 0)

That could be tough since he'll have a million gazillion fafillion dollars.  That matters more in a district primary.

Re: Use It Or Lose It: Last Call (3.00 / 1)

Then he can deal with 2 or 3 cycles of primary challenges then, until his money runs out.

The point is, if he won't spend it now when it can help the party, he can be forced to spend it later.  I think that's a noble goal.

I don't want people like him in our party, especially in a liberal state like Massachusetts.  He should be shown the door.

I didn't say we shouldn't do it, just that we may not get immediate results.

Re: Use It Or Lose It: Last Call (none / 0)

Historical footnote:  Marty Meehan won his job by knocking out incumbent Democrat Chester Atkins in the primary back in 1992.

(Probably a good thing, as for whatever reason Rep. Atkins popularity was sub-basement low, and he probably would've lost to a Republican otherwise.)

As I recall, Meehan also ran on a promise that he would only serve 2 (or was it 3) terms. I forget the exact figure but he has long since passed that mark and entered the ranks of "entrenched beaurocrats"

Very true... but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try.

Re: Use It Or Lose It: Last Call (3.00 / 1)

That's interesting.  Didn't MSNBC cover the Lewinsky story every night for over a year straight, allowing every right-wing crackpot to spread rumors about the sitting President?  And not even charge them for it?

Re: Use It Or Lose It: Last Call (none / 0)

I agree Meehan's response is pathetic.  And I agree he should be crushed by the netroots in any senate primary (Markey is a better champion for progressives in my experience any way), but whast is the point of us all investing large amounts of time and money against someone with $4m in the bank over a MA House seat.

This is where vengance and accountability start to become self-defeating.

I understand how you chose the list and will ask just one thing: Now that the Democrats in New York have decided John Hall in NY's 19th is a viab;e candidate to oust Sue Kelly will you take dirt on her, such as serving on the Page Board with Kolbe throughout the Foley scandal from day one?

Re: Use It Or Lose It: Last Call (none / 0)

Boo hoo! Poor Meehan!

Hey Marty, maybe you should sponsor a bill to permit less transparency in public disclosure of your campaign funds, eh? How about that?

What a jackass. Mr. Campaign Finance Reform is crying in his beer because members of the public looked at his FEC reports.

What happened to these dopes? Shays? Meehan? McCain?

Should we be expecting Feingold to flip out next?

Went into credit card debt to (none / 0)

give $100 to all.  I told myself that this year, I would not add to my credit card debt to fund races, but it is to important not to. By the way this fourth time I added to my credit card debt..

I am sure many others who gave are in the same situation also added to their card debt. Then to hear that "Marty Meehan, with over $4,000,000 cash on hand, has endorsed an editorial in the Lowell Sun that referred to the Use It Or Lose It campaign as "a nasty shakedown by rotten political scoundrels." tells me that some our elected Democratic leaders do not care as much as we do.

If we do not take congress they may blame the netroots, but it really will be the Marty Meehans of the world who cost us the victory.

Re: Use It Or Lose It: Last Call (none / 0)

The # for Rep. Crowley (NY-7) is wrong. I knew that the person answering the phone was too nice and willing to listen to what I had to say to be working for a New York pol. The correct # is: 718.639.7010. The woman who answers the phone there was downright rude, so it's correct!

My husband and I went to 200.00 this year (none / 0)

We think something less than about 1,000.00 is fair for a midterm year with no senatorial race in our district.

It would be awfully nice if someone realized that our money is as electronic as our vote; I am really getting bored of hearing how the south doesn't matter. spend our money well!

PS = regarding Meehan (none / 0)

Remember the important thing is to fund up the really wild races today. Its really fun to see how many candidates are running, that really support your views.

Who knows. We might even be able to elect a government that can get the job done..

Re: Use It Or Lose It: Last Call (3.00 / 2)

I donated to several Democratic candidates, primarily the close senate races.  I've NEVER given to a political party or candidate before.

So if I'm inspired enough to give, I have a very good feeling this blue wave is going to be massive.

Jan Schakowsky (none / 0)

I received the following statement from a member of Jan Schakowsky's (IL-9) political staff which shows that she has been doing more than her share. I can also add that I have seen her at numerous events for Democratic candidates running in districts close to hers:

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky wanted you to know the full story.  She is one of the top fundraisers and contributors to the DCCC and candidates around the country.  Jan has completed her large dues commitment to the DCCC and has raised and given to candidates through her campaign committee and our leadership pac.  All of our giving is reported quarterly to the Federal Election Commission and can be found on www.fec.gov.

Jan has raised and given over $2.7 Million this election cycle to the DCCC and candidates across the country.  Jan is a team player and supports the efforts of the DCCC.  We are going to be raising and giving to candidates through Election Day.

Re: Use It Or Lose It: Last Call (none / 0)

The Lowell Sun endorsed Bush in 2004. The only reason I read it is I get it for free in the morning at the train station. Of course they would love for Meehan to hold on to his money, rather than help the Democratic Party regain Congress.  He's lost my vote forever.

How about Matheson, UT 2?  He has opposition but is way up?  How do I find out how much money he has collected?

I saw Al Wynn today (none / 0)

at a rally.  I suggested that he give some of his funds to the DCCC.  I told another guy at the rally about it and he mentioned it to him as well.  When Wynn spoke, he talked about helping out other candidates, I shouted out "Use It or Lose It!"  He said, "Boy, you guys are tough."  It reminds me of the Harry Truman quote about Give 'Em Hell.  We tell the truth and it seems like Hell.

I saw Chris Van Hollen at the same event and talked to him about "Use It or Lose It."  He talked about all the money he has raised and how his PAC has helped candidates.  He told me that there are members who have raised no money and give no money.  He was in Ohio campaigning against Mean Jean yesterday.  Wynn said that he was at a fund raiser for the guy who is running for Foley's old seat. At least those guys are doing something.
