Google Bombing Progress Report 10/26

So I gave it a go yesterday and apparently google was trying to give me the results I wanted.  So I did everything I could think of to get Google out of my head and give me generic results, and here's what I've got.  Of course, let me know if you're getting different results- hopefully we can figure something out.

I conducted a google search between 7am and 8am Eastern today, and found 28 appearing on the first ten pages, with 14 of those appearing somewhere on the front page. It's still early, but we're certainly seeing some of these rise to the top, which is a good start.  On the flip, lessons learned thus far and the overall results:

So far, in checking in on progress, I've noticed the following areas to improve on our part that we can roll into a next time (if there's a next time):

*We've got to have the candidate's name in the title.
*Probably, we should google the name in the first place and choose something that comes up in the first 15-20 pages.
*We should choose articles with local resonance.  The articles can also have national focus, but they absolutely should be local.
*We need to be conscious of shared/common names. Charles Taylor and Peter King are names shared by lots of noteworthy people, all the more reason to find a preexistingly popular article.
*If we do this again in 2008, we should start early, expand the field, and introduce articles on a rolling basis before dropping the complete list a few weeks ahead of the election.

And so, without further rambling, my (hopefully accurate) results for 10/26:

Re: Google Bombing Progress Report 10/26 (3.00 / 3)

Thanks for doing this. Almost as important as the project in the first place, is monitoring its progress and seeing what works and what doesn't. One thing that is important to note on your list above is that all those "with different URL" probably had no relationship to the google bomb.

Re: Google Bombing Progress Report 10/26 (2.60 / 5)

I agree.  I think it's still worth noting though as part of seeing the whole picture when we do a full post-mortem.

Re: Google Bombing Progress Report 10/26 (none / 0)

I did get baselines on Peter Roskam, Mark Kirk, Dennis Hastert, and Chris Chocola. Roskam was sitting around 20 (before the page went down). The other three weren't in the top 250.

Agreed! (none / 0)

Without feedback, there is no progress.

Thanks for all the work that went into this, Lucas!

Wouldn't it be effective to include one or two of these links in our signatures? I have posted thousands of comments on Daily Kos. That would be thousands of links, no? And that's just for my one signature. There are over 100,000 users making millions of comments. That could be millions of links.

Re: Signatures (3.00 / 1)

Yes, it helps.

Google doesn't just do a straight up count of the number of links of course.  I suspect only 1 link per page would get counted, to avoid single webmasters being able to easily game the system.

My DailyKos account has one of the links FWIW...

I've noticed progress on the Yahoo search engine for Musgrave(CO-04)

by magster on Thu Oct 26, 2006 at 01:20:18 PM EST

Musgrave (none / 0)

A Google search for "Marilyn Musgrave" now puts the Rolling Stone article on the first page, 9th entry.

Re: Feedback (none / 0)

At this point, would it be more strategic to pool our resources on the searches that have made progress, or on the ones that don't seem to be going anywhere?

There are still a lot of people on dKos and MyDD who haven't added the sig line.

Also, is there a place with all of the html code for each candidate so that people can just paste is right into their account? That might help, and we could encourage people in open threads to visit and cut and paste.

I'm glad to see the Hart article rising.

The link for Sali goes to a site that requires registeration. Not good.

Re: ID-01 Sali (none / 0)

It's strange, there are several which have given registration issues to some people and nothing to others.  I know that, myself, i've never had any reason to go to the sites of these papers before, so i shouldn't have some weird cookie somewhere, but yet I get through to some that others can't.  I'm not really sure how to get around that issue.

Ya know, I thought I could get to that site a few days ago without registering. I wonder if some of the sites are seeing increased hits and changing their access conditions?

It wouldn't surprise me.  I think that's why the Roskam one disappeared as well.

google bombing (3.00 / 2)

I tried to coordinate a google bomb in 2004 using Hunter's anti-Tucker Carlson diaries on dkos.

It just didn't quite work, despite weeks of effort and coordination with other blogs. ie. The attempt to do one specific thing at one specific time was defeated by whatever terms Google uses to define its searches.  I'd call this "active" Google bombing, and, yeah it's tough.  I'd say the success of this effort is pretty damn good, given that.

One piece of advice I'd offer is for everyone to consider the value of forging a local blog and writing about your GOP opponent early and often and with careful use of headlines.  This is "passive" Google bombing.  I think, ultimately, this slow motion effort is more effective and, fwiw, "legit".

Matt Lockshin of SayNotoPombo did this and, since SNtP is a blogspot blog (and hence receives a nice boost in Google Page Rank) many of the searches for Richard Pombo point to his blog.  It takes work and time, but it IS worth it, and big part of the reason to build an infrastructure of local blogs. The thousands of diaries on dkos and MyDD would be much more powerful if they were all cross posted at local URLs that could develop their own native page rank and search engine relevance.  It's something to think about going forward.

My own blog, k/o, while it is not well-read at all...has a decent Google Page rank...and shows up in some of the searches for these candidates.

I always try to write my titles with that in mind.

Fwiw, the MyDD google rank is quite high.  The latest two pieces with the name of a GOP Congressperson from this website will show up high in the Google Search for that candidate.

One thing that any MyDD member might do is write more pieces with these candidates names in the titles...knowing that folks searching for information as we get closer to the election...will be reading these pieces.

In some ways, the google bomb key exists on this website already.  People just have to use it with that in mind.  (ie. write pieces that appeal to a general, election-minded audience looking for info on a candidate.)

Re: google bombing (2.60 / 5)

My dream, as I've mentioned in broad, inelegant strokes before and will more elegantly lay out sometime in the next week or so in one of these updates, is the following:

For '08, if we want to do something at all along these lines, we start VERY early.  We establish connections with what will hopefully be an even more vibrant network of local, state and niche blogs, and start bringing in relevant articles on this model at the beginning of '08 and just have it be automatic that anyone talking about the Republican does so with the hyperlink.  Slow tide instead of a last minute flood, plus it has adaptivity and the opportunity to present a storyline rather than just a single article.  Also has the added benefit of knitting wide-ranging blogs together and being an excellent example of how Democrats can work together without giving up their autonomy and individual goals.

Re: Google Bombing Progress Report 10/26 (none / 0)

Hastert is up to #14 as of 3:30 PM EST, a mere 10 hours after you saw it at #16 (and it was not in the top 250, per the above commenter, before the bomb started).

Maybe this is having an effect after all... I'd been skeptical that this effort would have an immediate impact, but google's indexing efforts look to be continuous these days.

Good job, everyone!

Now Hastert is at #49.  WTF?  And #12 is now the "dennis hastert" tag on MyDD, which certainly wasn't in the top 20 last time.  Weird... smells like hand editing to me.

I'm not getting those results (3.00 / 1)

For example, the Phoenix New Times article doesn't show up in the top ten pages for me, let alone on the first page.

Different google servers give different results.  When you have 100,000 machines, distributing the latest database takes hours, if not days.

NotBlindlyLiberal said:

I just don't understand.

How can you be proud of what you're doing?

You're doing your best to censor the other point of view and ONLY feed your own to people.

How is that any less worse than what you accuse Bush/Republicans of doing?

How would you feel if Republicans decided the only articles of Ted Kennedy on the first results page would those about him killing his girlfriend?

HAHAHA!

The Google thing is just insanely complicated. You may not be paranoid of the right stuff (always a big disaster). Life is complicated. Booglebombs do not kill people. Nor does Ted Kennedy. This Google bomb project got me started on a personal 'truthdig' about Google, which I posted on MyDD here:

' Google Bomb The Elections: Source Code ' (HERE)

Search down to my entry at ' Google is useless ' (I don't really think it's literally useless -- It's just an example of my kind of over-the-top metphor).

Note that this diary entry has 61 comments. Now try Googling the title of Chris' Diary entry in which my findings are posted. Now I'm really paranoid. I guess the Republicons and the neocons aren't taking over after all. Google is taking over.
