Bratty Republican Moderates, Take Two

Here are two more cases of entitled Republican syndrome.  Chris Shays, who has a little problem with disclosure and luxury trips paid for by strange political groups in violation of House Ethics rules, will probably lash out in a few hours after his opponent presses him on this.

And then there's Nancy Johnson.  Check out her ad against Chris Murphy.

This ad has the advantage of being stupid, crass, and memorable all at once, the perfect vehicle for an entited and bratty Nancy Johnson.  Her opponent, Chris Murphy, is pretty awesome.  You should volunteer for his campaign.  GOTV against tacky ads!

Where does the GOP get these actors from? Is there a secret pool of out of work, Republican actors out there desperate for a gig?

Re: Bratty Republican Moderates, Take Two (none / 0)

I think its just a pool of out of work actors, and the Republicans can't tell the difference between those who are out of work through bad luck, and those who are out of work for a reason.

stupid and crass (none / 0)

is right.

Contact Nancy here

I'd let her office know that, imo, running that kind of ad just burns people on politics and politicians in general.

I mean, when I door knock and a voter says to me, "all politicans are scuzzy"... this stupid ad...and others like it...are the reason why.

So, to ad to Corker's porn/hooker crap...Nancy Johnson will stoop to making an ad where her military veteran opponent parties with a "pot head" in some fictional scenario?

Um, that's pathetic.

This is the exact kind of thing that burns people on ALL political activism.

It's also lame.

Let me add "childish" (none / 0)

For someone who's trying to portray herself as a kind grandmother, she's pretty childish in allowing this ad to run. It's like a kid trying to be funny when she doesn't get the joke.

That said, it's a tacit acknowledgement of Chris' strength - connecting with real voters in a one-on-one way. She has to make fun of it because it's so powerful. Fortunately, I think it backfires in this ad.

At least they're really going out of their way to look stately and above the normal political rifraf.  Thank goodness they're staying classy, it should really cement the image they're claiming.

Christ man. Nancy Johnson.  She's like the bizarro version of my grandmother who, you know...really DIDN'T suck (same district that my grandmother lived in I think actually).

Re: Bratty Republican Moderates, Take Two (none / 0)

I disagree. I think it is great. Probably full of crap, but it is different from most attack ads.  It has humor and a candidate impersonator. Looks like a sketch from Saturday Night Live.

Most Democratic attack ads are crappy. Same old bad picture of  Candidate X and a voice over " Candidate X voted against schools. Candidate X voted against the minimum wage." Blah. Blah. Blah.

Humor and humiliation wins every time.

Re: Bratty Republican Moderates, Take Two (none / 0)

seems to me, much like the Steele ads in Maryland, it might grab attention, but it makes the candidate look silly and fluffy at a time when that really isn't gonna accomplish anything.

Re: Bratty Republican Moderates, Take Two (none / 0)

I wouldn't so so far at to say it's a great ad, but it's pretty good. It's entertaining, and like you say, that sets it apart from most political ads.

Murphy could strike back with a similarly entertaining ad. Imagine a bunch of Republican ad writers brainstorming around a table. Each one throws out some crazy ad idea, each one more outrageous than the last. They get more and more excited and veer off into tinfoil territory. Then one of them says, "Hey guys -- I'm a little nervous about these suggestions. They could backfire and get us into trouble. Shouldn't we stick with the truth?" and the rest shout him down saying, "You sap! Truth is for Democrats!"

Her smile after that ad is going to cost her more votes than she gets from the ad.

Seriously. (none / 0)

That "I'm XYZ, and I approve this message" thing is workin' out great, ain't it?

Totally shaming people out of negative ads. Not.

Re: Bratty Republican Moderates, Take Two (none / 0)

Clearly, this ad shows that the Nancy Johnson campaign has been cleverly infiltrated by guerilla Murphy activists who realize that Murphy's image is too "square" to really get out the pothead vote. And at the same time, too square for any honest citizen to buy the punchline for a second.

However, it falls down in one crucial respect. ... don't want to have the potheads pulling a Homer.

Any effort to get out the pothead vote really needs to stress how to vote absentee. Like the pothead guy goes on and say, "like, Dude, we sent out for our absentee ballots last week, it was like real easy. And we are filling them out now, before mailing them in. Man, its a great excuse for two parties, one to fill out the ballot and one on election night."

Re: Bratty Republican Moderates, Take Two (none / 0)

I've listened to the ad with the alleged "jungle drums" a couple times and, I'm sorry, but I just don't get it.  At no point do the drums ever sound remotely like "jungle drums".  I mean, has anyone making these accusations about this particular ad ever even heard any African music, or "jungle drums" before?  Seriously.  There's a section of a song called "Brettino's Bounce" on Funkadelic's album "Electric Spanking of War Babies" (their last great record) that has long sections of nothing but "jungle drums" along with various other jungle-like sound effects.  THAT was the kind of thing I expected to hear when I listened to this ad.  Instead, the music during the "Ford" sections just sounds like your garden variety sappy background music from any typical radio spot.

Honestly, I wanna take down racist scum like Corker as much as anyone, but this really seems like grasping at straws.

Re: Bratty Republican Moderates, Take Two (none / 0)

I'm sure the positions are exagerated, but I think the ad is pretty good as attack ads go.  The humor defuses the normal nasty tone of an attack ad, and it's memorable.  I wish Dem's would come up with some stuff this good.  So far, the VoteVets ad is the best thing I've seen, and it's not running in nearly enough races.

Re: Bratty Republican Moderates, Take Two (none / 0)

This is an example of an ad where the requirement that candidates say "I approve this message" at the end really hurts the effectiveness of the ad. It makes the otherwise grandmotherly candidate look like petty and stupid. It might have worked as an ad from a 527, though-- in that case I would have regarded it as kind of funny.

Re: Bratty Republican (none / 0)

I thought it was a good ad.  I laughed.  I can't say it would make me vote for a candidate, but I don't listen to commercials anyway.  I do appreciate an entertaining commercial though.  Its better than the typical political ad.

I think its an example of how much better the republicans are at making ads than democrats.  And, for once, this one doesn't play on "the FEAR."

Now, Mr. Murphy needs to come up with something good to counter it.  Nancy's got a hugely long record.  Shouldn't be hard to find some stupid stuff she voted for.
