Use It Or Lose It: Down To The Wire

In case you hadn't heard, the Use It Or Lose It campaign is a program where constituents call their ultra-safe Democratic House Representatives and ask them to help fully fund all of our competitive challengers this cycle. You can participate in the program here. There are only two days left when campaigns can still buy media, so we need to make this happen immediately.

So far, the campaign has been working quite well. At least a dozen Representatives and two Senators have made large contributions over the past week (in MA alone, people like Kerry, Kennedy, Frank, Markey, and Capuano have given). Whether or not it was because of our campaign, I can't imagine that your encouragement hurt. Just read some of our statements of support:
  • Barney Frank
  • Hilda Solis
  • Earl Blumenauer
  • Grace Napolitano: "Rep. Napolitano would like to thank her constituents who have placed calls on behalf of the Use It Or Lose It initiative. They reaffirmed her effort to contribute more to Democratic congressional candidates. She will continue to pay close attention to more congressional races so that she may be able to contribute more funds prior to Election Day"
Thank you to all of the Representatives who are giving. Your contributions will not be forgotten. We know who the big givers are this cycle, and we know who faced real challenges. We will remember and praise the heroes. However, those who have not given proportional to their warchests and challenger levels can expect the issue to come up again in the future.

We are not DCCC lone sharks. We are not consultants looking for more advertising commissions, ala my suspicions of the people who set up Hey, John! We are staunch supporters of the fifty-state strategy, who frown upon narrow targeting and look for Democrats to spend resources in every state and district. We are grassroots Democrats looking to take advantage of a truly rare opportunity.

In 2006, fifty or sixty (or more) Republican held seats are in play. We know this chance might not come again in a long, long time. In this one instance, we want ultra-safe Democrats to transfer a large, but non-crippling, amount of their funds in order to help fully fund our challengers in all of these districts. This could very well be a one shot deal--don't expect to see a replay of this campaign in future cycles.

There are only a couple of more days where such transfers would be relevant or useful.. We know that many of these Representatives have given already this cycle. We know it isn't easy to give away money like this. We don't even need credit. We are just looking for ways to help extend the playing field in this elections.

Your calls are making an impact. People are giving. Please, keep calling today.

Safe Senators? (none / 0)

Chris,

Have you considered the safe democratic senators?  Kerry and Kennedy gave.  What about all the other class of 04 Democrats?  Salazar?  Obama?  Boxer?

I don't see senators on your list is all.

I thanked Kerry at the Pat Murphy rally (3.00 / 1)

As he was departing I got to speak directly to him and say "Thank you for your additional contributions to the committees,"  as I was shaking his hand.

I'm not sure he knew I was refering to the Use it or Lose it campaign (it was a very busy moment) but I hope he puts it together later...

As I understand it, (3.00 / 1)

my Congressman, Barney Frank, had already given more than his fair share before the campaign kicked off. Am I mistaken?

Re: As I understand it, (3.00 / 1)

You are correct.  Frank has come through in good style.  Ignoring other criteria, he's upped my estimation of him for becomming the next MA senator should Kerry/Kennedy retire.

Re: CA-12 Use It Or Lose It: Down To The Wire (3.00 / 1)

I just heard from Janet at Tom Lantos' (CA-12)campaign office. She was very proud that Tom has sent $200k to the DCCC. She was somewhat taken aback when I knew how much cash on hand he had ($1.4M as of 9/30), had nothing to say about the suggestion that Tom might send 30% to shore up close races, and said she'd get a response from the congressman.

Can anyone help me on the CA-12? -TJ

Kudos to Calif Congressmen (3.00 / 1)

Called all of the CA congressmen. Could only leave a message for four. Of the others, all of the people that I spoke to were very encouraging and already engaged in supporting other Dems,
especially Adam Schiff.

not too early to get thank-you's on their way to those who've responded well. Earl Blumenauer should also be thanked for doing some campaign stumping around the country, this cycle. I don't know much about him, but I like what I've seen, this cycle.

cover (none / 0)

This post reminds me of a good thing to keep in mind when we do stuff like this: It's not just persuasion we're offering, but also and just as importantly we are providing cover. There are a lot of people whispering in congresspersons' ears. If they have people telling them to hoard their cash (and they do), they need something or someone to point at to say "I have to do this," even if they already agree with the idea. That sounds like the gist of the Napolitano message, and it's worth remembering.
