Re: Google Bomb The Elections: Source Code (none / 0)

If I recall correctly, the main Google index is updated monthly, so we probably won't see any new results for half the candidates in the next two weeks.  Can anyone confirm this?

However, news.google.com, when sorted by "relevence" (the default) should swing to the desired articles pretty quickly.

Re: Google Bomb The Elections: Source Code (none / 0)

That doesn't seem right, cause then it would take a month for news stories to show up at the top.  stories about the pages show up if you google foley...

Re: Google Bomb The Elections: Source Code (none / 0)

No, that's not correct anymore.

Google's bot searches indexed sites continuously, there is still a monthly update/cleanup, but that's much more likely to affect new sites or sites using illicit means to subvert google (whereupon they remove you from the index).

I can't find any info on how quickly a site gets researched, but it seems like from the FAQ on google that some webmasters actually complain google checks their site too frequently.

Remember: DON'T call it "Google bomb" (3.00 / 1)

When posting the code, simply preface it with a statement explaining something like "Here's a bunch of informative articles on important Republicans running for Congress."  Don't use the words "Google bomb" -- CNN's spent much time yesterday trying to tell their viewers that Google Bombs Are Bad Bad Bad.  If they see the words "Google bomb" on your website, it's likely to turn them off.

by Phoenix Woman on Tue Oct 24, 2006 at 12:48:17 PM EST

nah it don't matter (3.00 / 1)

The idea isn't that people are drawn to your website, the idea is that, by pasting this into your blog, Google tells people who search for those officials to go directly to the articles we are linking to.

Nobody will ever see "Google bomb" in your site because they won't be going to your site.

I missed a final "/a>" at the end (without the quotes).  The last line should be:

If you wrap it in a <span style="font-size:20%">...</span> ; then people don't actually have to read through it and you can hide it in all sorts of strange places.

What happened to NY-19 and John Hall? (none / 0)

I remember there being two articles for the NY-19 candidate John Hall.

I don't see either source code listed or the race.

Whats up?

He cut races which he felt didn't have strong enough articles to include in the project.

thats just... stupid
No offense but I don't understand the reasoning behind this:
Obviously your only going to google bomb your own race... so why not include all of the competitive races people can think of?

I don't get it -- include more is better because it expands the field.

Re: What happened to NY-19 and John Hall? (none / 0)

I understand your point- I'm not necessarily saying his choice was wise or unwise on this point.  Without putting words in his mouth, I got the impression that the concern was over the impression that the effort will end up leaving.  A watered down version doesn't pack the same punch and doesn't get spun as well.  It leaves the effort more open to accusations of being poorly conceived and implemented.

My dream- which is a bit of a longshot by admission, is to start this next time in January and bring articles in on a rolling basis (ie when a good article comes up) and hit as many Republicans as possible.  As articles come in, people can pick up their own race, and then a couple weeks before the election, we can unleash the master list for everyone to pick up on.

It's pie-in-the-sky maybe, cause who knows whether anyone will still care to do something like this next time around, but if we take another shot at it, we should try to do it big.

Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind. Absolve you to yourself, and you shall have the suffrage of the whole world.... No law can be sacred to me but that of my nature. Wikipedia ... if this gets any kind of traction then I'd expect the battle to move to wikipedia as supporters of candidates delete or alter text at links like wikipedia.org/MyCandidate#Controversies.

If people are still working on the database of linkable stories, it's worth looking for alternatives to wikipedia.

Because I'm a geek and I find it incredibly annoying.  (And also because the lolfailure account just was canned).  This is the tactic which spammers and people with no taste use.  Just google for any number of consumer products or drugs.  Do we want to be counted among the drug traffickers and cheap $5 bouncy ball people or do we want people to take the movement seriously?  Once it gets out that "The Dems are Googlebombing" no-one with a blog is ever going to take anything seriously again.  Google has already discredited itself among corporate America and many European countries I deal with by forming a political group, this is just another nail in the coffin.

I think it's a great idea to discuss the issues, but I think it's a serious mistake to commit to something as vapid and baseless as trying to manipulate search engine results.

problem related to Kuhl link (none / 0)

Someone has changed the wiki page so that the "Personal" bookmark doesn't go down to the "Personal" section of the entry. Instead the link now takes you to the top of the wiki page, which kind of messes up the google bomb a bit.

Actually, the originating page counts more (none / 0)

Just thought I'd clue some folks in on how Google works.

If you build a link farm, get ready for Google to beat the hell out of your pagerank next quarter.

Sorry, but this Google-bombing campaign is friggin low-ball and amateurish.  It's going to cost smaller sites pagerank in the long run.

The better approach is to get people pushing more real content against these campaigns and have serious bloggers link to each other more.

This is a dumb and poorly executed idea that might have been worth trying before Google started punishing link farming techniques.

What's next?  A ponzi scheme to raise cash?

2). Voting machine fraud is a huge concern.

2008 (none / 0)

This is all great stuff.  I'm thinking, though, that it'll be equally important in 2008 to make sure to optimize search results for the challengers.

Incumbents are better known by the electorate, by and large, than challengers.  So undecided voters are much more likely to google the challenger, and, with less other info about the challenger in their heads already, they are more likely to be swayed by the results.

by kilb on Wed Oct 25, 2006 at 03:37:44 PM EST

You need ALT tags inside your links (none / 0)

If your goal is to do serious SEO, make friends with the following items:

ALT tags for links and images.

The H1, H2 and H3 HTML tags.

Add descriptive classes to you P entities also helps.

SEO isn't really as hard as people act like it is.  Most people just don't place enough relevant content next to their good SEO work, and Google eventually dumps them for being bullshitters.

Which means it isn't enough to have a block of links.  That would have worked nicely eight years ago.  Today, Google worries more about your ratio of content to links.

Basically, Google is reversing your trick to detect your trick, and it genrally works.

Worse, as your Google bombing effort spreads, Google's scoring system will note the similarities and punish site scroes accordingly.

That won't hurt a high-traffic site like MyDD, but it will hurt your local bloggers who may only have 100 visiitors a day.

A Hell's Angels Pile On Google (none / 0)

I never like to leave the job half done. So -- A deep look at Google just before it takes the net over completely:

GOOGLE BLOGOSCOPED:

# Google wants to push their ad system. E.g. in 2006, one of their aims was to sell $1B of new inventory. Google feels that if they make the world's inventory available "marketers will come."

# Google also wants to push their communities and content. According to the papers Google published, Google Video has 50% of the world's "online video attention" (a number that's hard to believe, and especially interesting because Google still ended up buying YouTube). Google also emphasized that a fifth of all communication bandwidth - on Google-owned properties, I suppose - is read through Gmail.

# Google tries to make sure their tools are running everywhere. In around mid-2006, according to their internal numbers 60 Million Google Packs had been installed, but they still want to increase the deployment... especially for "novice users."

But the truth is, Google really just wants to rule the world!

Look at this!:

Break For News Forum
Post by: elbowdeep, Wed Jun 21, 2006

I hate to rant on for a while, but this has been really bugging me as of late... I've been watching Google, and yes, my paranoia is not at "red" level, but it is definitely at yellow when it comes to Google. With each new product they release, it just sends shivers down my spine. Doesn't anyone else see what is going on?

Let me digress...

It all started when a friend of mine "invited" me into GMAIL. Oh how nice I thought... when I created my username and password, I was amazed that my REAL NAME was already PRE FILLED. Didn't think much about it at the time... started using it, works good. No problems. Then one day I clicked on the "Invite a friend" link (or similar), and then it hit me. I was requested to fill in a form asking for the persons name, and current e-mail address. This is a very slick way to draw out information from an unsuspecting person. Especially since if I would have been asked for my "real name" and e-mail, I wouldn't have given it, and provided a secondary junk e-mail. But a FRIEND, trying to "invite" me in, would be perfectly willing to give up my name and e-mail, and this is where a root SEED, or NODE is created, with my name and e-mail as the base info.

Knowing what I know about relational databases and neural-networks, this has been eating me ever since. It looks perfectly innocent, my name and e-mail are in the system. BUT that is not all. My name, e-mail, and CONNECTION to the person who INVITED me are now linked, and so-on and so-on for everyone I invite, and everyone else that first friend invited. I wouldn't doubt that they could find x degrees of seperation between anybody they like.

Now lets assume for a minute that the "data" is being assembled into a "Neural Network" for use at a later date...

Re: A Hell's Angels Pile On Google (none / 0)

Onward into the rabbit hole.

Mother Jones

News: Internet privacy? Google already knows more about you than the National Security Agency ever will. And don't assume for a minute it can keep a secret. YouTube fans--and everybody else--beware.

By Adam L. Penenberg
Illustration: John Hersey

October 10, 2006

Google Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the two former Stanford geeks who founded the company that has become synonymous with Internet searching, and you'll find more than a million entries each. But amid the inevitable dump of press clippings, corporate bios, and conference appearances, there's very little about Page's and Brin's personal lives; it's as if the pair had known all along that Google would change the way we acquire information, and had carefully insulated their lives--putting their homes under other people's names, choosing unlisted numbers, abstaining from posting anything personal on web pages.

That obsession with privacy may explain Google's puzzling reaction last year, when Elinor Mills, a reporter with the tech news service cnet, ran a search on Google ceo Eric Schmidt and published the results: Schmidt lived with his wife in Atherton, California, was worth about $1.5 billion, had dumped about $140 million in Google shares that year, was an amateur pilot, and had been to the Burning Man festival. Google threw a fit, claimed that the information was a security threat, and announced it was blacklisting cnet's reporters for a year. (The company eventually backed down.) It was a peculiar response, especially given that the information Mills published was far less intimate than the details easily found online on every one of us. But then, this is something of a pattern with Google: When it comes to information, it knows what's best.

From the start, Google's informal motto has been "Don't Be Evil," and the company earned cred early on by going toe-to-toe with Microsoft over desktop software and other issues. But make no mistake. Faced with doing the right thing or doing what is in its best interests, Google has almost always chosen expediency. In 2002, it removed links to an anti-Scientology site after the Church of Scientology claimed copyright infringement. Scores of website operators have complained that Google pulls ads if it discovers words on a page that it apparently has flagged, although it will not say what those words are. In September, Google handed over the records of some users of its social-networking service, Orkut, to the Brazilian government, which was investigating alleged racist, homophobic, and pornographic content.

Re: A Hell's Angels Pile On Google (none / 0)

I guess Google is following the path every great corporation follows. It tries to explore more and more markets so it's profits would further increase. Normally this growth is limited but Google has overcame this general limit a long time ago. I'm just wondering about how many different companies work in the financial sector for Google and how many working capital advisors Google has.

Re: Google Bomb The Elections: Source Code (none / 0)

Not working.  Not for several that I tried.  The intended links are not in the first two pages of search results.

Whatever the "ethics" of this strategy (see the conversation in a follow-up post), it has been preempted, probably by Google who don't like people to think their results can be manipulated.

And it makes lefty bloggers look bad too, by people who have no idea of how it's supposed to work, and who weren't going to search for info via that channel anyway.  Unfortunately, that's the take-home message of this campaign.
