The Great Congressional Wire Transfer

After talking with a wide number of people who are interested in helping, I have decided to go through with the campaign I proposed last night to transfer funds from safe Democratic campaign accounts to the accounts of competitive Democratic challengers. In order to start the campaign, I need your help.

Look at the following list of representatives: Unopposed House Democrats Campaign Cash. Choose one representatives, preferably someone near you. Fine the following information on this represenative, and post it in the comments:
  • The email and phone number for their campaign office.
  • The amount of money they have given to other Democrats and to Democratic committees this cycle. You can use Open Secrets for this information.
  • Whether or not s/he has ever been in a close election.
Choose a Representative near you from the list of 45 Representatives here, and find this information. Then post the information in the comments. If you have the time, move on to a second representative after you have finished you first representative.

We are going to make this work. A lot of people are on board with this campaign, and finding this information is crucial to its success. If we can help facilitate a transfer of millions of dollars to competitive districts from safe districts in the final weeks of the campaign, we can make a huge impact on the outcome of the campaign. Please, get on this right away. We need to make this happen ASAP.

Using the donor lookup feature, he doesn't appear to have given anything away. Would this be the correct way to determine that?

Re: Robert Brady (D PA-01) (none / 0)

I'm having the same problem. I actually looked up Tom Allen (in my state, ME) this morning, and called his campaign office. He's got $380k cash on hand, and is gliding to re-election. His staffer tells me he's donated to DCCC generously, but on Open Secrets, there's nothing. I suppose there's some PAC or whatnot he used to contribute through?

And are we ignoring people in sure-thing campaigns, like Allen? He oughtta at least cough up a couple hundred thousand of that, I figure ...

How about helping in person. (none / 0)

They could also put their personal time on the line and help with campaigning, speeches, fundraising.

Even something as simple is being seen attending a debate is a contribution, and these un-challenged representatives could probably use some practice to keep their game up.

Even though she has an opponent, she will win this race easily. She represents my home district, and I've interned at her district office over a summer, so I'm putting her up as well. Also, I'm going to put the D.C. contact info up as well; perhaps it'd be more effective calling them there?

Re: Rob Andrews, NJ-01 (none / 0)

On opensecrets, you've got to go to the candidate page then 'Expenditures' and scan the list.

Andrews gave $40,000 to the DCCC, and a bunch to other election campaigns that I don't recognize. And $9,600 to Chocolate Heaven.

I think finding this 'already given' information is gonna just bog us down. It's great if someone like Tom Allen, my representative, already gave $50k. But this could turn into a landslide, and he's still sitting on $380k. That's all I really care about.

in order to look up expenditures (none / 0)

Search for the congressman's name under "find a politician."
then, click on the congressman's '2006 campaign finance profile'
then, in the left hand column there are a number of options.  You want to click on "expenditures".

Then just search through the expenditures.

Jerry Costello has given $125,000 to the DCCC and individual donations to Duckworth, Baron Hill, Rod Blago, Mark Kern, Rosella Wasner, Tom Holbrook, Judge Cueto, Boswell, Dan Lipinski, $78k to something called "congressional FCU", Illinois Democratic Party, Ellsworth, Lane Evans, Matt Melluci, Phil Hare, The Illinois Delegation Fund, Melissa Bean, and the St. Clair County Dem Party.

He's sitting on $1.5 million despite what he has given.  I'd say he's given roughly $300-$350k, if that Congressional FCU thing is related to campaigning.  He's spent a total of $5 million this cycle and raised over $1 million.  Running unopposed.

Jerry Costello (IL-12) has a whopping $1,516,242 on hand.

Costello for Congress

Hasn't been in a close race anytime recently (2004 Election: 69% of vote, 2002 Election: 69% of vote, 2000 Election: 100% (!) of vote)

I searched on his name as a donor on OpenSecrets and couldn't find anything. Is there another way to check?

Re: The Great Congressional Wire Transfer (3.00 / 1)

Yes, if you click on the "expenditures" tab on the left side of this page on Costello, it will list all of his expenditures, including to the DCCC and individual races. Kind of fascinating.

Perhaps Chris could update the post, to make clear that the best way to look is not through "donors" but through the expenditures on the candidates pages.

Thanks for the extra info above. Costello has given
 $125,000 to the DCCC.

And $2,000 to each of these campaigns,
Dan Lipinski, Baron Hill, Lane Evans, Phil Hare, Rock Island, Tammy Duckworth for a total of $12,000.

Oh and $1,000 to Leonard Boswell.

So all told: on the order of $138,000 this cycle (I may have not recognized some contributions. There's no way to sort by political contribution even though they're categorized that way if you click on them!)

Not so hot.

Rep. John Tanner (TN-08)

Nine-term Democratic incumbent in West Tennessee.  Won his last re-election in a walk, 74%-26%.  Not running unopposed, but Tanner is a cash-rich and an entrenched incumbent.  His house district is adjacent to the district being vacated by Harold Ford, and Steve Cohen (vacating his seat in the TN state house to run a competitive race in TN-09) could use his help.

Re: The Great Congressional Wire Transfer (none / 0)

I would ask with the greatest respect that only names from the Unopposed List be placed on this thread.  I'm attempting to keep up with who on the list is completed for the information that Matt's looking for with respect to this project.  Jesse Jackson Jr. and Tanner might want to have Diaries set up for them on the front page(you guys are correct, the could help others.  But this is about the Unopposed List.

Thanks!!!

Re: The Great Congressional Wire Transfer (none / 0)

Sorry -- I will comply going fwd -- but in Tennessee, that's about the only option available to folks locally to have an impact.

Most of the other races you have listed are in "blue" states, and you have a lot of red-state yellowdogs itching to help.

I didn't see an "opposed" diary.

MA-10: William Delahunt

He's not unopposed, but he's facing a ham sandwich that I'd never even heard of until I looked him up on the MA-GOP site.  The guy isn't even campaigning - no lawn signs, no public appearances.  Shows you how moribund the MA-GOP is.

Delahunt has 1.8M on hand (as he did in '04), gave only 125K to DCCC (up from 100K in '04) and has kept a profile so low that he might not even exist for all anyone knows.  This guy needs a wakeup call.  Can we include him in the project?

Re: Rahm Emanuel IL-5 (none / 0)

My congressman and head of the DCCC.  Has never had a close race in the general election.  When he initially ran in 2002, he won the primary fairly easily, otherwise no real opposition.

That equals $97,000 given to individual candidates of which only $38,000 was given in 2006.  Add that to the $70,000 he gave to the DCCC in 2006, that's $108,000 given in 2006.

He needs to be sinking at least 4 times that amount into these 2nd and 3rd tier races now!

I don't think she's on your list. She has no competition in Washington, DC with its 90% Dem registration. She should be shelling out cash for two reasons: 1) it's the right thing to do and 2) make friends who will support voting representation for the residents of DC.

Tim Holden PA-17 (none / 0)

Should be a safe seat. His opponent raised $12,000 according to the last report on 6/30

Raised:   $976,820
Spent:   $551,214
Cash on hand:   $555,452
As of 9/30/2006

Washington Office
Congressman Tim Holden
2417 Rayburn HOB
Washington, D.C. 20515
(202) 225-5546
(202) 226-0996

Donation to Dems:
DCCC $20,000

And $1,000 to the following:
Alan Mollohan For Congress Committee, Fairmont, WV
Bob Filner For Congress, San Diego, CA
Committee To Bring Back Baron, Seymour, IN
Erlanson For Congress, Minneapolis, MN
For Congress, Boswell, Washington, DC
For New York, Anthony Weiner, New York, NY
Lucas for Congress, Portsmouth, VA
Sherrod, Friends Of, Amherst, OH
Woolsey For Congress, Petaluma, CA

And he gave some money to a few local Democratic county organizations and candidates. But I didn't see any donations to other PA races. Holden really should give to Murphy, Sestak, etc. so that he can finally get some blue around his district which is in a sea of red right now.

Mike Thompson (CA-1) (none / 0)

He's not explicitly running unopposed, but Mike Thompson in CA's 1st district (Northern CA from Napa up the the OR border along the coast) is in an incredibly safe district.  According to the latest FEC filing he's sitting on a warchest of     $567,818.88, compared to his Republican opponent who has less than $15K in the bank.

On the other hand, our good neighbor Jerry McNerney, in CA-11 (North-Central CA from just SE of Napa across the Central Valley down to about Modesto) is in a very competitive race against Dick Pombo.  Pombo's seat was probably considered safe until recently, but in the midst of all the Republican scandals erupting nationwide, he's in danger of being dragged down by his own links to Abramoff, among other things.

McNerney has run a good campaign up until now, but he's only got about $300K to work with, compared to over $1.1 million currently in Pombo's warchest.

I started bugging Thompson's campaign this week to get behind McNerney and throw some cash his way.  Thompson's campaign has indicated he's been sharing with other Dems nationwide, but stressed he has to be careful since if Pombo wins he'll have to continue working with him.

I like Thompson a lot, but this is exactly the DLC attitude that has kept our campaigns sunk for the last several cycles.  This is definitely a race that we can take, but not without active help from safe districts.  Thompson needs to step up.

Thompson's campaign can be reached at 707-226-8989.

Who Gave Money (none / 0)

Yo, I have some info on some California Representatives, but I can't find on Open Secrets where it says who they have given money to. If you tell me how, I can add a few.

Re: Who Gave Money (none / 0)

On an individual candidate's Open Secrets page, you can click on "Expenditures."  You can then scan the list, and if you click on a given entry it will tell you, for example, whether the donation is to a federal race or not.
