You Don't Know the Half of it Chris- $32,910,014 more

I've been watching for a long time as money piled up in the bank accounts of unopposed House Democrats, and so I'm glad that Chris Bowers and, by extention, Markos have picked up on this and hammered the point home effectively.  But it's not just the 45 Dems who have no Republican opponent who are hoarding the dollars.  On the flip are the 64 House Democrats (in an ugly, clumsy list) who are facing a Republican who has raised under $10,000 in this election cycle and their cash on hand as of September 30.  This, to me, constitutes unopposed in practice if not in name.  Between them, they're sitting on nearly $33 million.  Using the same measure as Chris- Rahm's 58 Republican held districts- this money would add up to 567,414.03 for each campaign.  Add that to the 453,248.59 that would come from passing around money from the 45 unopposed Democrats and that's 1,020,662.62 per campaign.  I fully agree with Chris that we should be chasing after this money, as it absolutely is the fruit of spreading Republicans and their donor base far too thin.  Don't stop at the convenient 45 though.  Plenty of other Democrats can start to ante up without breaking a sweat.  If we're going to truly seek out a collective and national party, that pools resources and abilities to the best possible collective end, we need what everyone can realistically spare.  So, as we've done before, let's expand the playing field.

Doggett... He hasn't been an any close elections since Republicans started their re-re-re-redistricting schemes trying to oust him...  Shame on him for having a stockpile.

Commenting here as well as at DailyKos.

You're missing the biggest fish of the bunch though, Rahm Emanuel.

He doesn't fit the criteria listed above because his opponent, Kevin Howard White, has managed to raise $39k (with $11k COH remaining), but does anyone think that he is in a competitive race? (For those of you not from Illinois, the answer is no. This is a Chicago district. White no doubt only has the pittance of money he does have because some people will always give to the guys challenging their opponents leadership.)

He is the chair of the DCCC, he is in an uncompetitive race, he is looking to be majority leader (should the Dems earn a majority), and he is the one pushing for more money to the DCCC. In the meantime, he is sitting on $1.2 million. Now to be fair, he has already given $470,000 to the DCCC this cycle, but still.

The DCCC needs money. We're asking people to give. Don't forget about Rahm.

Re: You Don't Know the Half of it Chris- $32,910,0 (none / 0)

There's no doubt that, absent from both my and Chris' list are Dems who have a technically feasible opponent but really don't need the couple million they're sitting on to win easily.

This money DOES go to worthwhile things sometimes, like GOTV, and it isn't like none of these folks have pitched in.  But these committees and candidates and organizations never stop calling US begging for our bottom dollar.  Why should they be held to a different standard right?

Here's what I posted in the unopposed candidate's diary.

Most of the money he has given was in 2005, not 2006.

Re: $50 million more, Lucas (none / 0)

The amounts piled up in safe Senate campaign chests for this cycle are over $51 million.  Let's look at the kitties:

Diane Feinestein   8,046,401 (as of 6/30)
Tom Carper         2,154,641
Bill Nelson        6,835,120
Ed Kennedy         7.435,096
Kent Conrad        2,907,719
Ben Nelson         2,118,843
Hillary Clinton   22,162,694

That's            51,660,514.  Of course Evan Bayh has $10.5 million socked away for his presumed Presidential run and Maria Cantwell has over $5 million in the bank and looks pretty safe.

Re: $50 million more, Lucas (none / 0)

Can't even begin to get angry about this also. Not today at least.

Feinstein would be one thing if she was spreading millions around the state on GOTV for House and Governor/SoS/etc. but she isn't.  Her camp has been doing more harm than good for Angelides so far.

Bill Nelson I can see going rainy day since Repubs with megabucks will keep coming after him, same with Conrad.

Kennedy really doesn't need a dime at this point, and that'd be some sweet bank to shove up Felix's ass.

Hillary- well...she has to conserve now for her Presidential run, and hopefully she'll be paving the streets with dollars for GOTV all over the state, but I'm dubious.

Re: $50 million more, Lucas (none / 0)

Credit where credit is due. Hillary Clinton has already given $1 million to the DSCC, has been actively fund raising for the Democratic House candidates across the state, and has given substantial dollars to the state party as well as integrating her own campaign organization into the state party organization in an effort to help out candidates across the state.

That said... I'd like to see her give another $1 million to the state party to build an even stronger field organization.

It would help her. It would build good will. It will strengthen the state party. It could make all the difference in the world in winning a number of the 9 Republican held congressional seats in NY.

A win-win-win-win situation all around.

Re: $50 million more, Lucas (none / 0)

have you noticed that fundraisers stop asking once you've done "enough"? I haven't.

Re: $50 million more, Lucas (none / 0)

Cantwell gets a break on this. She will probably win but she is one of the Republicans targets.

It is the Ted Kennedy's and Diane Feinstein's of the world that need to be coughing up the bucks.

Oh... and Chuck Schumer too. How much does he still have in the bank?

Re: $50 million more, Lucas (none / 0)

Chuck Schumer has $10 million bucks in the bank.  Would I like to see some of that applied to this campaign?  Oh, yeah!!

Re: $50 million more, Lucas (none / 0)

Yeah... Chuck doesn't have to worry about running again until 2010! And the guy is such a prolific fund raiser he could reasonably give away

every... single... penny

and not harm his own chances one wee little bit!

Re: You Don't Know the Half of it Chris (none / 0)

For the record, Mike McNulty in NY-21 has been doing just that. He has been very active in assiting Kirsten Gillibrand's campaign in NY-20 and the state (and local) party in building a field organization.

I completely agree that this is a team effort and those that aren't pitching in need to feel the pressure to do so... now.
