GOP Giving Up on NRCC Chair Tom Reynolds, Too

We already knew things were looking down for Tom Reynolds, the GOP Congressman from New York's 26th district who currently serves as chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Following reports that Reynolds knew of allegations that Mark Foley had made inappropriate advances on pages and former pages yet neglected to do anything about it, Reynolds released a disastrous television ad that likely only added fuel to the fire. Two recent polls, one from Zogby the other from RT Strategies, show Reynolds trailing his Democratic challenger, Jack Davis, by margins fo 15 points and 16 points, respectively. And just last week, Reynolds no-showed on ABC's "This Week", a move that hardly instilled confidence. Now, Bob Novak (note the source and grab the appropriate grain of salt) is reporting that key Republicans are now effectively writing off Reynolds' chances at reelection.

A Republican campaign operative with a reputation for accuracy has put Rep. Tom Reynolds, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, on the list of incumbent Republicans who are ''gone'' -- that is, sure to lose their seats on Nov. 7.

Reynolds' prominence as a Republican leader who was responsible for handling Rep. Mark Foley of Florida has dropped him 15 points below his Democratic opponent in his supposedly safe upstate New York district, according to a poll taken by John Zogby after the scandal broke.

Reynolds was slumping even before the Foley affair made news. Republicans and Democrats alike try to pick their campaign chairmen from House members who do not have to defend their own seats in Congress. However, industrialist Jack Davis, a self-financed former Republican, is running a vigorous campaign against Reynolds in his second try at defeating him.

It's a real indictment of Republican stewardship of the House for the man in charge of the party's campaign committee to be on the brink of defeat -- according to his own party members. Not since 1980, when 35 seats changed hands from the Democrats to the Republicans, has the chairman of the NRCC or his Democratic counterpart lost in a general election.

If you want to help make a difference in New York 26 by supporting Jack Davis, head on over to Chris' new ActBlue page, In My Backyard, and throw in a few dollars to help ensure that the unnamed GOP operative cited by Novak is proven true and Reynolds is indeed defeated.

Hmm. Then I guess that someone hasn't been keeping these guys up to date:

White House Upbeat About GOP Prospects

Incidentally, while it's not the same thing, the GOP has unseated the Democratic senate majority leader and house speaker, in 2004 (Tom Daschle) and 1994 (Tom Foley--and what is it with politicians named Tom and upset losses--Tomfoolery, perhaps?). So these sorts of things are no longer unprecedented.

And one word for that: payback.

Hah! Don't forget to tell that to your friends Dick and Harry (who of course as President of the Senate and Senate Majority Leader will be going at it next year).

It wasn't just Reynold's apology TV ad that did him in.  I think he destroyed himself with the pathetic use of children as human shields during his first press conference re: Foley.

That stunt will go down in history as one of the worst political moves ever.

Yeah...the GOP has done some rather idiotic press moves. Reynolds hiding behind children was such a transparently cheap stunt that was bound to backfire.

That move made it pretty clear that Reynolds was more interested in covering things up than telling the truth.

New York is dark blue this year (none / 0)

While Foley is probably the major issue flipping this race this year, I think Reynolds was vulnerable before.

While his district leans Republican, Eliot Spitzer and Hillary Clinton are going to win statewide in a landslide this year and both (especially Spitzer) will likely win in this district, so it's no surprise that Reynolds is in jeopardy.

Nevertheless, It's a bad sign when the GOP isn't even fighting to save the very person in charge of saving their House majority.

Re: New York is dark blue this year (none / 0)

A lot of the New York Congressional races were on the cusp of being close, but the Foley-Reynolds scandal really exposed the Republican rot and made people willing to vote for the Democratic candidate.

We've definitely got the momentum.

Re: New York is dark blue this year (none / 0)

Thank god its momentum and not joementum!

ahaha....

Anyway, the NY races are really starting to turn into the dems hands. Just about every contested house race in NY is close or leaning dem (besides two races i think).

Foley really brought the 'values' voters to question their about who their votes are going to and NY seems the prime target to pickup some great seats in this midterm.

Heck in the NY-19, my local race, Sue Kelly was the Page Board Chair from 1999 to 2001!

How more connected does one need to be?

It's all about the Senate, now (none / 0)

The more I see, the more I believe that for the GOP and the Whitehouse, the only real goal in this upcoming election is holding on to the Senate.  And the way they plan to do that is to 1) help Lieberman and 2) get him to switch parties, or at least vote GOP for majority leader.

CT's looking more critical to me by the day.

Jerome Armstrong's link on Breaking Blue sure makes Jack Davis more than just another apparatchik when he knocks off Reynolds.

My Lord, the man is [gasp] a real liberal.

And after all the nasty thoughts I had about him.

Sorry about that.

Best,  Terry
