NC-8: "All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go"

With the latest poll showing Larry Kissell in a dead heat against Republican Congressman Robin Hayes (NC-8), I'm getting my sleeping bag ready. On Sunday, I'm heading down to the 8th district, where I'll spend the entire week campaigning for Larry. I'll be making phone calls, canvassing, meeting with the "movers and shakers" in the district, attending events - and, well, pretty much anything else the campaign wants me to do. With 47% polling for Hayes and 46% for Kissell, this race can go either way. I want to make sure it goes our way.

From time to time next week, I'll come here and blog the experience. In fact, you should experience it for yourself by coming to the 8th district to campaign for Larry. I promise. You don't have to eat grits or pork barbecue if you don't want to. But you may just make the difference in who controls Congress. And, if you don't have time to come to the 8th, you can always contribute.

I'm ready to take back Congress. And, Larry's just a great candidate. He's honest and sincere. He understands the issues. And he shares my values.

On top of that, I just don't like Robin Hayes. He's arrogant. We saw his arrogance when he voted for CAFTA, after repeatedly promising to vote against it. We heard it this week when, asked about the latest poll numbers, he replied, "a lot of people we know say `you've got it made, you don't have a race.'"

But Robin Hayes is Casey at the bat. And on November 8th, I predict there'll be no joy in his Mudville.

NC Races (3.00 / 3)

Good luck Jerry and good luck to Kissell and Heath Schuler. NC has an opportunity to help lead the Dems back into a majority in the House.

If you get some time, I'd like to know your thoughts on Dem prospects for retaining control in the General Assembly. I'm particularly concerned that the many scandals swirling around scumbag Speaker Jim Black threaten Dem majorities. Very few Democrats in office in our state have taken any kind of stand against Black. We are blowing a great opportunity to show that we stand for honest ethical government. Instead, we've handed Republicans statewide a great issue to run on.

If you've shown any leadership on this at all, I'm sorry to say I'm unaware of it. Where do you stand? What have you done/are you doing about this situation? Do you, or do you not support Black? Please show me I'm wrong about this.

No one is commenting on this, not even in private.  Although there are some rumblings, even friends are sticking to the party line.  It is very disappointing.

If the Democrats lose the NC House this year, it will be the fault of Jim Black - and every Dem incumbent who didn't call for him to step down as speaker.  Black is responsible for holding down Democratic chances in NC this year.

There has been too much bad press for Black, and the conviction yesterday of Kevin Geddings for shenanigans involving the lottery that Black pushed through just keeps Black's name in the headlines.

The state GOP doesn't have a plan if they win - they just want the power so they can "fix" education. They are a joke - and they might just win, thanks to Jim Black.

Edwards for Governor in '08 (3.00 / 2)

I guess we all think he's going to run for president again. I don't think he'll win this time either (I'd still vote for him though, especially if it came down to Edwards vs. H. R. Clinton for the nomination.)

He's young enough to sit out next time, get some strong executive branch experience as NC Gov, then run again for president in the future, when he's got a stronger background to run on.

Edwards is leading among Iowa Democrats according to the Des Moines Register.  In June (their last poll) he led Hillary 30-26 followed by Kerry (12%) and Vilsack (10%). In a September 24 poll, Edwards did the best among those 4 against Republicans Frist, Romney, Giuliani and McCain going 2-2 with a virtual tie against McCain (down 1 point).  His favorable/unfavorables were a lot better than any other Democrat.

In short, Edwards is probably the favorite for the Democratic nomination at this point.

and that makes him a great State Party chair.  His energy is contagious and I am so glad he is turning it loose for Larry Kissell.  He is the kind of candidate that gives me hope that things can get better.

Way to go, Jerry!

The Foley scandal was particularly bad for the NC republican members of congress. It is a scandal that is particularly troublesome to people of faith.

When news of Bush's "using and making fun of evangelical christians" reaches the people ...Not only will religious support ...just not go to the republicans  ...it may, instead, go to the democrats.

Religious principle is important to the voters in NC. Moral issues and civil/legal/criminal issues like torture, justice and freedom are important to these people.  They'll realize that they were duped into supporting Bush in 2004. North Carolinians are proud, strong and independent people.  I'd think they'ld want to get even by supporting ALL of the North Carolina democratic congressional candidates this year.

The Bush approval numbers in NC-5 and NC-6 are way below the 2004 numbers.  NC-5 and NC-6 might have low democratic performance, but they have much higher persuadibles than either NC-11 or NC-8.  With a little luck, and some extra time on your part, you could win them all.

You may be on the road for the next few weeks!
...But in the end, you'll have a substantially democratic congressional delegation to show for it!
