More Media/GOP Mythology

From an article on the Democratic plan to clean up Congress, from this morning's Roll Call (subscription only):

Ron Bonjean, spokesman for Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), said the latest Democratic move "sounds like a good show" but rings hollow since some Members have yet to return all of their Abramoff-linked contributions. In recent days, a string of Republicans, including Hastert and President Bush, have returned their contributions connected to Abramoff.

"Democrats lack an agenda -- they are keeping Jack Abramoff's money and at the same time they are throwing mud," Bonjean said.

No Democrat has taken any money from Jack Abramoff. Not one. To say that any Democrat is "keeping Jack Abramoff's money" is a lie, plain and simple. It would be one thing if it was a lie coming from a rightist squawking head like Michelle Malkin, but it's absolutely outrageous coming from the office of the Speaker of the House.

The pressure is on for the media to parrot the Republican talking point that the Abramoff scandal is bipartisan. It's not. As Howard Dean did a beautiful job of pointing out to a disappointed Wolf Blitzer on yesterday's Late Edition, the Abramoff scandal is Republican, through and through.

There are no Democrats who took money from Jack Abramoff, not one, not one single Democrat. Every person named in this scandal is a Republican. Every person under investigation is a Republican. Every person indicted is a Republican. This is a Republican finance scandal. There is no evidence that Jack Abramoff ever gave any Democrat any money. And we've looked through all of those FEC reports to make sure that's true....

Senator Byron Dorgan and some others took money from Indian tribes. They're not agents of Jack Abramoff. There's no evidence that I've seen that Jack Abramoff directed any contributions to Democrats. I know the Republican National Committee would like to get the Democrats involved in this. They're scared. They should be scared. They haven't told the truth. They have misled the American people. And now it appears they're stealing from Indian tribes. The Democrats are not involved in this.

The media has been so beaten down by charges of partisan bias (often rising these days to accusations of treason) that they are desperate to roll up a few Democrats in this scandal. But the reality is that Democrats in Washington, DC haven't been worth bribing for quite some time. They lost control of the House in 1995, with no serious indication (until this year) that they might win it back. They lost control of the Senate that same year, only to win it back briefly in 2001 before losing it again in 2003. And the K Street Project has long ensured that lobbyist dollars would be funnelled almost exclusively to Republicans. So no matter how the GOP and their intimidated allies in the media want to spin it, the corruption club in Washington is GOP-only and has been for the better part of the last decade.
