Relaunched MyDD & launching CTG

Here it is at last, now I can get on with my other 4 lives. The photo on the left rotates randomly daily. It just happened to be on Rosa Parks today, which is sorta a good tribute... ah, welcome Dalai. I've got about 15 photos in the loop right now, and will ad more later. The Breaking Blue is self explanatory. So is the E-Wire (we'll hopefully be bringing that down to all the GOV, Senate, House races too). Lots of other new stuff on the user end, and especially on the admin end. Anyway, hope you like it.

Oh, btw, there are 135 books left of the Progressive Partnership for Crashing the Gate. At least there were, just before Markos posted it on his blog.

You can pre-order here.

So its a big day today. MyDD is relaunching, and CTG is going out of my hands and into yours (today is also the last day for any minor edits). Thanks to everyone that's got a copy, I am really looking forward to coming back here next month and blogging about it with you. And let me know in the comments with anything regarding the relaunch.

[Update]: The problem on Mozilla appears fixed. Firefox 1.0 has some problems (really people upgrade to 1.5), but amazingly, IE works great, along with Safari.

"MSM" ?!?! (3.00 / 2)

New setup looks very nice.  Except one thing: I was horrified to see the "MSM" tag in the E-Wire!

This is a high school-level framing error: see some recent posts by Markos.  MSM standing for MainStream Media sets the frame that blogs are not mainstream.  So here MyDD is shooting itself in the foot!

Markos wisely advocates the use of a term such as "traditional media" instead.  Please let's not shoot ourselves in the foot by reinforcing the bogus "MSM" tag.

Re: M$M dammit! (none / 0)

Sombody should probably inform Markos that blog are not mainstream. Pretending they are will not make it so. Of course MSM is incorrect. The preferable frame is M$M to reinforce that what you refer to by the awkward waste of keystrokes "traditional media" is nothing more than a funnel for the corporate scumbags and RWNM.

"Traditional Media" gives the M$M way too much credibility and fails to reinforce the negative image they so richly deserve. Did I mention it is also a waste of keystrokes? Since TM will never fly, M$M is here to stay.

Re: Momentary glitch (none / 0)

Both feeds have a rather significant glitch: the links to the story don't work.

For example, the feed for this story links to http://www.mydd.com/storyonly/2006/1/26/ 15811/5729 (which gives a 404 not found error); it should link to http://www.mydd.com/story/2006/1/26/1581 1/5729.

This is using Safari 2.0.3 (up to date).

Looking good.. should we use this post as a place for comments and suggestions?

I noticed the State Analysis blogroll is no longer in alpha order.
The photos on the About page seem to be broken too.

Would be interested to see what sites feed into the E-Wire, and how we can suggest sites that might not be there already. Maybe add some info to the FAQ about Breaking Blue and E-Wire?

Re: Relaunched MyDD & launching CTG (none / 0)

I preferred the old design, this one looks too busy on the front page, and the posts are less invitingly readable.  It's a decent design, but the one we had until now was better.

When dKos redesigned last year, I pretty much stopped reading it altogether, except when people give me specific links, because its new design is horrible.  This is not like that.  I'll keep reading, I'm just unhappy.

Re: i have to sorta agree (none / 0)

It's not just the font size, it's also that there seems to be less space on the page devoted to the posts.  I'm not sure if that's actually true, or just a side-effect over the overly busy left sidebar.  I'd much prefer there being only one sidebar, anyway.  And less color variation (2 colors + black & white can work, but not if those two colors are blues and oranges, IMO).

I thought this was a very detailed and useful commentary about site admin.  You might even save yourselves a few requests.

2.  Link to or provide a very simple list of instructions for people to make things bold or provide links that work.

This will make Gary happier and generate less angst the next time he calls us out for being html impaired.

I agree.  MyDD could use a more comprehensive faq that addresses the following things:

Basic community standards, including what transgressions can result in a user being banned.  I also think it would be cool to see accumulated mojo.  Chris's posts about what makes a good diary is helpful.

A hypertext primer, also referenced above.

More detailed biographies of the front page bloggers.

Is an advertising or contribution link a bad idea?

Re: Relaunched MyDD & launching CTG (none / 0)

I love the new look, and Breaking Blue sounds very promising.

Just FYI, I've been using Firefox for a long time, and today I also installed Opera, since someone over on dKos said that it's so much faster at loading diaries with a lot of comments (which is true). So I happened to open up the new MyDD in Opera, and it's a little funky compared with how it looks in Firefox, but not terrible--definitely readable. I guess there aren't that many Opera users, but I thought you might want to check it out in that browser too.

Re: Relaunched MyDD & launching CTG (none / 0)

The site looks pretty good but I thought I'd point out the things I've noticed about it. One little thing that was quickly apparent is that I can no longer (easily) get the uid of commenters by hovering over their names in the comments. This is still active on dKos but has been disabled here apparently. I will miss that feature as it is the quickest way I know to at least see if someone has passed the test of longevity at MyDD.

Was this a technical decision or is this being done to make things better?

BTW, love the new tab for feedback. That's handy.

One annoying change is that the ad column now won't play nice and stay off screen when I resize to just look at the text. Sure you've gotta pay the bills and advertisers demand to be looked at but .... I hate it when I am prevented from moving the ads out of my field of vision. Tapped has been that way for a long time and I've hated it there as well so I'm not singling you guys out. Just a "feature" that seems to be catching on which is obviously more for the people who pay the bills than the people who read the site.

I'm seeing some indenting oddities in comments but I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature. Also in the comments I notice that the first paragraph has a smallish font and then the font changes in subsequent paragraphs. That same behavior is there in blockquoted material as well. Looks kinda weird in the blockquotes that the first paragraph is smaller than the rest.

All in all looks pretty good.

Re: Relaunched MyDD & launching CTG (none / 0)

I just posted a comment and encountered a bug. I'm using Firefox 1.06 on NT.

I grabbed a clipboard full of John Kerry off of Kos and when I previewed it in a blockquote using auto-format the resulting HTML was broken because at every line break in the pasted text a set of < p > tags had been inserted. Well that worked ok for the interior lines but the beginning and ending < div > tags got broken when the < div > tags became interlaced with the < p > tags. Just to make sure, I tested the copied text and it did not have the < p > tags in the clipboard text. They were inserted by the previewer.

Make sense?

Here's what the first line of the broken code ended up looking like:

< p > <d i v class="blockquote">Filibuster! < / p > .

So you end up with a tag sequence of p then div then /p which is obviously invalid.

To replicate just use auto-format, grab a multi-paragraph post from somewhere and paste it in between the opening and closing div tags. I don't think it matters but I did use class="blockquote" in the opening div tag.

To fix I tried inserting a couple extra p's but ended up just using HTML formatting and inserting my own line br's.

Here's a link to the comment I ended up posting and to the diary on dKos that I grabbed the text from.

Interlaced tags when auto-formatting pasted text (none / 0)

I tested and have narrowed down what will lead to getting the interlaced tags. Here's the test text I'm using:

Do I support a filibuster? The answer is yes.

Yesterday Senator Kennedy and I spoke with our colleagues about it. I don't have a shred of doubt in my opposition to Sam Alto's nomination. I know Senator Kennedy does not either. He has truly been a great leader in the effort to oppose Judge Alito.

I spent a lot of time over the last years thinking about the Supreme Court and who America needs on the highest court in the land. So I don't hesitate a minute in saying that Sam Alito is not that person. His entire legal career shows that, if confirmed, he will take America backwards. People can say all they want that "elections have consequences." Trust me, more than anyone I understand that. But that seems like an awfully convoluted rationale for me to stay silent about Judge Alito's nomination.

I pasted the above in without alteration directly from the clipboard and then previewed with auto-format. Results....

Preview Comment
Your HTML has the following errors :
Closing tag (P) does not match last opening tag (DIV).
Closing tag (DIV) does not match last opening tag (P).

Still didn't work.

To recap, I created an empty div tag then pasted in a few paragraphs from Kerry's diary at dKos I had copied to the clipboard out of Mozilla. Result was still that first line ended up with interlaced tags when using auto-format. Here is the resulting first line of the div as taken from the source of the previewed page (asterisks inserted afterwards):

<*p><*div class="blockquote"> Do I support a filibuster? The answer is yes.<*/p>

Ok.... after sticking in some HTML BR tags in between the paragraphs in the pasted text auto-format works. Take them back out and you get the interlaced tags again. In fact, if there is even one blank line in the pasted text I get the problem even if there are other lines with html BRs inserted.

I think we got rid of the p tags now, and you don't have to do the div class for the blockqoute, it'll work just with open tags around it, then closed.< blockqoute >  and then < / blockquote >

With Safari 2.0 the first paragraph in multi-paragraph posts often has a noticably smaller font than the rest of the post.

Re: DD? (none / 0)

No, no, no!  Not "direct" democracy but rather "deliberative" democracy.

Direct democracy led to Howard Jarvis' Proposition 13, which decimated both California's public schools and pubic universities in the 1980's.

Direct democracy leads to the tyranny of the majority, which means that it is okay to discriminate against gays.

Direct democracy also gave us Arnold Schwarzenegger as California's governor.

If you read James Madison's definition of "factions" in Federalist #10, the Founding Fathers did not intend our government to be a direct democracy--but rather a deliberative democracy where the common good is pursued through reason.

Little Plus Signs... (none / 0)

What are the little plus signs next to all the titles?  I've tried clicking a few and can't figure out what they do.  Maybe I'm missing something obvious.  Any help is appreciated.

Re: Relaunched MyDD & launching CTG (none / 0)

Yea, I friggen hate the way that these < p > tags are infiltrating the rendering of html. Rusty says its the way of the future, but "I'll overrule.

Hahaha

I noticed this while posting a diary.  I was pissed for a minute until I noticed turning off "auto format" would fix my woes (but not my code!).

Re: Relaunched MyDD & launching CTG (none / 0)

A few things..

The new site looks a lot better than the old site, and Direct Democracy is a much better name than Due Diligence.

The text in the right column is not aligned correctly with the column in Opera.  It's still readable but just looks a little "off".

I don't know what other pictures you have, but I know that if I was designing a Democratic site I would populate it with photos of American workers.  You know - auto workers, steelworkers, firefighters, teachers, nurses, electricians, coal miners, farmers, and construction workers, instead of the Dalai Lama (or as Utah Phillips succinctly puts it, the Tibetan Ruling Class in Exile :)  The Republican noise machine has been trying to portray us as the party of third worlders, non-Judeo-Christian religions, and hoity-toity urbanite hipsters, and themselves as the party of American workers, for many years now.  Why lend credence to their stereotype by playing into their hands?  Just a thought.

Cool :)  Don't mind me, the combination of the Ford layoffs and Hamas winning the Palestinean elections has me in a grumpier mood than usual...
