Afternoon Thread

Maybe I'm getting lazy, but I'm really getting into posting these threads that offer quick-hitters on a number of topics. Here we are for today:
  • Help out Francine Busby. This is clearly a seat that we can win come April 11th.

  • Remember to visit the three new Open Letter blogs: Chris Mathews, Tim Russert, and The Washington Post.

  • From what I have heard, right now the "no" votes on Alito are somewhere in the range of 44-47, and the filibuster votes are somewhere in the range of 37-40. In other words, we are close, but not there yet. Unfortunately, I have no idea who the weak Senators are on the filibuster vote, so I can't give you any information which contacts would be best to make.

  • Well, the conservatives are finally the largest party in the Canadian parliament, outnumbering Liberals 124-103. The Bloc has 51 seats, and the NDP has 29. With one independent and 155 needed for a majority, the conservatives will have to heavily rely upon the Bloc in order to maintain a government. When the Bloc decides it is time for new elections, the Bloc will get its wish.

  • Check out Harry Reid's speech at the Center for American Progress today.

  • The MyDD poll will be finished, and the data sent to me, on Thursday night. We are working on a pre-SOTU release strategy.

  • Speaking of Thursday night, pickup up a copy of Get This Party Started, as Thursday will mark the start of our conversations with authors of different essays in the book. The first such as is me! You can also find the book physically located in Barnes and Noble.
This is also an open thread.

Frist is denying Democrats time to speak on the floor. We need to get the word out about why Alito needs to be filibustered:

Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. (Click here)

People for the American Way has collected nearly 65,000 signatures to send to the Senate, please add yours: Save the Court Petition

John Kerry has endorsed this anti-Alito petition, signers' names will be read into the Congressional Record:

And as thanks, some Alito jokes:

"Supreme Court confirmation hearings are under way for Judge Samuel Alito. It's pretty interesting. Democrats want to know his position on privacy, while Republicans want to know his position on prison terms for bribery." --Jay Leno

"The American Bar Association gave Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito their highest rating. President Bush gave Alito his highest rating, too, because he called him 'Super' and 'Duper.'" --Conan O'Brien

"President Bush was asked how he came up with a conservative like Alito, and he said he got the idea over the weekend while turning the clocks back." --Jay Leno

"Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito says he's embarrassed by some of the things he wrote in the 1980's. Yeah, apparently Alito wrote the song 'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.'" --Conan O'Brien

Re: Filibuster, How To: (none / 0)

I thought Nebraska Nelson has endorsed Alito? That's what CNN said the other day anyway.

Does anyone have numbers on who might oppose Alito but not support a filibuster?

Re: Conversation? (none / 0)

The problem is that the book isn't available (at least on Amazon) until the 25th, so it's highly unlikely that anyone will have had a achance to acquire it, let alone read it.

Kos is lazy too.  He posts these quick hit threads.  I like them.  It is like a 1 minute News Summary your hear on the radio.

See what I can do? (none / 0)

Colorado Dems are holding House Parties on the 31st; Udall will be giving a conference call before the SOTU - maybe we could convince him to sneak a couple of poll results into the call?

Are these (house parties) being done around the country?

by Phoenix Rising on Tue Jan 24, 2006 at 04:59:01 PM EST

Re: See what I can do? (none / 0)

How might that be accomplished, getting Udall to note the numbers? I'm serious. How can we get him versed on findings next week before SOTU? There's going to be relevant stuff.

Re: See what I can do? (none / 0)

As I said, Mark Udall will be hosting a 2006 victory party for the Colorado Dems via conference call; I thought I saw somewhere that others were also planning on hosting house parties for the SOTU as well.  I think you might be able to feed him (and any other Congressperson or figure that might be involved in this kind of thing) your analysis/results beforehand, through his campaign office or perhaps I could forward to the Colorado Dems who might be able to get a bit more "visibility" to the Congressman for the event.

I'm a county party chair, and hosting one of the parties, so I might have a small say, but then you're the pollster - you might have a bigger say ;)

Re: See what I can do? (3.00 / 1)

I'd recommend just sending the results to his Chief of Staff, Alan Salazar.  He can take it from there.

Re: See what I can do? (none / 0)

I don't know that I've ever seen him answer that question.  Salazar is not an uncommon name in Colorado; I worked with one at a job last year.

I asked him once.  I think he told me the relation was somewhat distant.

Re: See what I can do? (none / 0)

Good point.  Alan's a semi-active blogger, and he'd likely be receptive to seeing this poll.

Lindsey Graham (none / 0)

Anyone else hope they link Graham to Abramhoff?  Graham behind bars, humiliated would be a nice sight.  That guy is a piece of shit who lives in a fantasy world.  Put him out in a race outside of South Carolina and watch how quick he gets his ass handed to him.

47 votes against Alito? (none / 0)

Is anyone really hoping to pick up the Mainiacs and Chafee?

If we get even Snowe and Chafee, then we need to filibuster.  I don't think there's any way in hell we get either vote.  I am eager to listen if someone wants to correct me though.

John Doolittle (none / 0)

The Sacramento Bee has been running a series of articles about California Republican John Doolittle and his connections to lobbyists.  Doolittle went on the radio and pulled a Gary Hart, challenging the media to find something on him.

Don't you love it?
