Final Update || DAY OF ACTION: Texas filing deadline is TODAY. Y'all can help!

This is a followup to this diary from last night by Adam T.

Key words: Texas, 2006, 50 state strategy

Update [2006-1-2 16:21:11 by NeuvoLiberal]: John Morris and Roger Waun will field Democratic challenges in TX-12 and TX-13, respectively. Thanks are due UKLIB here at myDD and boadicia over at dKos for posting updates on the filing status. We have 4 filings left to cover all the bases in the lone star state, and 3 hours to do so.

Update [2006-1-2 20:49:11 by NeuvoLiberal]: Per 5:45pm posting, all the CDs in Texas except TX-11 have a Democratic candidate. Please see this posting. Please stay abreast with filing deadlines and status at Barry Welsh's 2006 Congressional Races page, and get involved at local and national national levels. Thanks for helping and participating. Next up: WV (01.28.06), Kentucky (01.31.06), NM (02.14.06), and OH (02.16.06). Have a great day!

Update [2006-1-3 15:16:2 by NeuvoLiberal]: Since this diary is still on the REC list, I'd like to take this opportunity to recognize RBH and BENAWU for their continuing work on the 2006 election and their informative commentary below. Finally, here is a statement from the TX Democratic party chair:

Charles Soechting on Democratic candidate filings and the 2006 elections: “Democrats are proud of the many qualified candidates we have running all over the state and up and down the ballot. Whether statewide or for the State House, our candidates are in step with the values of Texas families and offer a real alternative to the failed Republican leadership currently in charge.
The only way to make Democracy work is by digging our heels into it!

From the Texas Democratic Party website:

Texas Dems - How You can File for Office!

REMINDER: All candidate filings must be received by the TDP or your local county party (where applicable) on Monday, January 2nd.  The TDP HQs will be open from 9am-6pm to accept filings; if you file locally, check with your county party for their hours of operation.  Because this is a Federal holiday, USPS, FedEx, LoneStar and UPS will not make deliveries.  Don't lose your place on the ballot by submitting your paperwork late!

Now's the time for action - get your name on the ballot!  If you plan to run for office or are just thinking about it, please take a look at our Checklist for Democratic Candidates.

Here's a list of Democrats who have filed for office.  This list will be updated daily.

-----------

From Adam's diary and the comments there, the following congressional districts were uncontested as of yesterday:
1.Texas 2: Ted Poe, Republican incumbent
2.Texas 11: Mike Conaway, Republican incumbent
3.Texas 12: Kay Granger, Republican incumbent
4.Texas 13: Mac Thornberry, Republican incumbent
5.Texas 24: Kenny Marchant, Republican incumbent
6.Texas 26: Michael Burgess, Republican incumbent
but two of those may have found a Democratic candidate:

  • evidently, TX-24 will be contested by Gary Page.
  • buckhorn okie has mentioned that someone he knows will be filing today in TX-2

Assuming that those two filings will go through, it appears then that the incumbent Republicans in the other four CDs may go unchallenged, and I am hoping that that scenario will change by end of the day today.

-----------

So, how can we potentially help? Here are some possibilities.

  1. If you live in one of those CDs, please consider running, and act upon it swiftly.

  2. If you know someone that knows about those CD areas, investigate possible candidates (such as well known community leaders, DFA members etc), and see if you can get in touch with them pronto!

  3. Please post this information on online boards, blogs and other communities that you frequent.

  4. You may find this site useful to check on campaign contributions by individuals.

  5. Please keep tabs on the TX Dems' list of filers, and post any updates in comments below.

  6. Here is the checklist for potential candidates.

Thanks for any and all help in this regard.

TX-12 (3.00 / 1)

John R Morris has filed in TX-12 according to the Texas Dem website so five to be filled now.

Re: TX-12 (none / 0)

You're right! Thanks for the update.

If the two that I mentioned in the diary file through, then we'd be down to 3 unfilled with 6 hours to go.

TX-13 (3.00 / 1)

Roger J Waun has filed in TX-13 so just four to go and hopefully TX-2 & TX-24 are already covered.

Re: TX-13 (none / 0)

Waun already has a natural slogan.

"Waun is the One"

(granted, I'm guessing that Waun is pronounced "Juan", and I think that slogan doesn't violate pun rules)

Re: TX-13 (none / 0)

TX-24 should come through with greater certainty because of this post at DU yesterday. But, I am not too sure about TX-2.

Thanks again for your updates.

I'll update the diary entry shortly.

TX-11 & 26 (none / 0)

Last month it was being suggested that the guy who ran in TX-26 last time might run again but I've not seen anything more on that. There don't appear to have been any rumours re TX-11.

Re: TX-11 & 26 (none / 0)

TX-11 seems to be really hard.

I'm surprised somebody ran in TX13, although somebody did run in TX13 in 2002 (when the 108th lines had a 75/25 Bush split), TX13 ended up at 74/26 for 2000 after the Delaymandering.

TX11 is Midland/Odessa, the part of Texas that hasn't voted for a Democratic Presidential candidate since Truman.

I'd hope that Lico Reyes or somebody could file in TX-26.

But in a way, it'd be one heck of a miracle if somebody filed as a Democrat in TX11. TX11 was only Bush's best district in America in 2004, where Bush won 78% of the vote.

Somebody give an ESP signal to a Democrat in Ector County (that has the amount of money needed to file)

Re: # of races with Dems in them, 1992 to 2006 (none / 0)

This is extraordinary.  Best result since before 1992, with the exception of a single year - '96, when the district lines were drawn much more favorably for democrats?  Congrats to our friends in Texas.

Re: # of races with Dems in them, 1992 to 2006 (none / 0)

Someone correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believe that would be Kentucky, 1/31.  WV 1/28, but there already appears to be a Dem candidate in all three districts.

Great tabular information here.

Re: # of races with Dems in them, 1992 to 2006 (none / 0)

And in 1996, we had more incumbents in the House from Texas.

We have 31 candidates but only 11 incumbents. So the number of challengers is pretty high here.

Re: # of races with Dems in them, 1992 to 2006 (none / 0)

And I LOVE this - check out the Republicans' list of all the candidates who filed on their side.  If this is fully up-to-date, they have Republican challengers for TX-15, TX-19, TX-27, and TX-30 only.

So, Dems are running in 19 of 20 Republican-held districts.  Meanwhile, they're running candidates for only 4 of 11 Dem-held seats.

Yet more evidence that the winds are shifting.  We could urge, cajole, and organize all we want on the blogs; that can help, but this sort of thing doesn't happen unless people smell change.

Re: # of races with Dems in them, 1992 to 2006 (none / 0)

I dont think the tx repub list is complete as it is missing a candidate in the 7th despite the fact that the incumbent is a repub who has not indicated that he is retiring.

Hope the list is right though  :)
