Hoeven will not challenge Conrad

"I wish to put to rest the speculation about my political intentions at this time." So said the Republican Governor to Senator Conrad in North Dakota. Nice, another failure for Liddy Dole and Karl Rove in the recruitment area. Every single thinking Republican out there can sense the blood-letting year up ahead for the GOP. I don't see how they get Capito in WV either, given Byrd's popularity. Mark Kennedy and Kathleen Harris are the best of the Republican recruitment so far. Weak, the both of them-- and they are giving us the best shot of the decade at picking up those two House seats they are leaving. Who knows, maybe Capito will become clueless-- we'd pick up that House seat too. If Reid and the DSCC could come though with a strong candidate in Nevada, the possibility of taking the Senate comes into reach.

Hell ya! (none / 0)

When the GOP's best pickup opportunity rests in the hands of Mark Kennedy, you know they have a problem.

Now if only we could get someone to run in Ohio....

John McCain wants to stay in Iraq for a century.

Re: Hell ya! (none / 0)

You can take North Dakota OUT OF PLAY BABY! That leaves us with...

  1. Minnesota. We gotta beat Rep. Kennedy, and in a blue state in a blue year, I say we do.
  2. Maryland. Steele's black GOP novelty isnt going to do the trick against Rep. Cardin who will tie him to Bush co. in deep blue Maryland. Steele already trails in the polls and this is not the state level where anything goes. A Republican in Maryland in '06 on the federal level, statewide... IT AINT HAPPENING.
  3. Nebraska. Nelson would normally be sweating it out in deep red Nebraska but, while its not a forgone conclusion, he looks good with no top-tier challangers.
  4. Washington. Cantwell may have been vulnerable, but in recieving nothing but token opposition she will win by 8-9 points.
  5. Michigan. Stabenow: see Cantwell.

I sincerely believe we will not lose a single seat this year. And pick up 3-4. Lets gets get 'em!

Isn't Hackett running in Ohio? (none / 0)

I don't think he's made it official yet, but he appears to be in.

Warner (none / 0)

If only Warner makes the decision to enter the VA Senate race, I'd feel better about our chances of recapturing the Senate.  He'd win that race, why is he putting his own ambition before the party and nation?

Also, how is Kennedy weak?

Dont forget Steele (none / 0)

And I wouldnt call Katherine Harris a recruitment success of Dole/Rove, since they were begging her to NOT run. I honestly dont see the appeal of Michael Steele. Yes, he is black, and Republican, but he is basically a Bush rubber stamper and I dont see how that flies in Mary and especially next year. I think MN will be a tough race, but I never understod what was so great about Kennedy. The GOP acts like he is their Barack Obama or something, but I dont see it. And we've got two great women running there, Klobuchar and Wetterling.  And I think we can take Capito's house seat with her in office too. Her vote % went down last year compared to 02.

Hoeven probably looked at Thune and decided (none / 0)

it wasn't worth it even if he won. John Thune gave up the opportunity to be governor to run a grueling race against Tim Johnson, which he narrowly lost. Then he ran another grueling race against Tom Daschle and narrowly won. He was no sooner sworn in than Bush, who was practically his running mate during the campaign, decided to close Ellsworth Air Force Base, the second largest employer in South Dakota. Thune lucked out when the BRAC commission decided to keep it open, because if it closed, he'd have been finished. But even though he beat Daschle and the base didn't close, he still looks like a shell of his former self. Hoeven knows that victory is far from assured in a race against Conrad, who is no Daschle. The race would have been tight, but Conrad would likely have prevailed in the end. At this point, he's probably hoping to pick up an open seat in the near future.
