Meet The New Boss--Same as The Old Boss

It appears that Drier has been quickly thrown under the bus. After initial reports indicated Dreier, now Blunt will be the new majority leader:
Rep. Roy Blunt of Missouri emerged as temporary House majority leader Wednesday in a fast-paced episode of power politics triggered by the indictment of his one-time patron.

With Texas Rep. Tom DeLay obliged to relinquish his leadership post for the time being, Blunt forcefully asserted his claim to the job in personal meetings with Speaker Dennis Hastert, according to several GOP officials.

At the same time, conservative lawmakers quickly made known their unhappiness when reports circulated that Hastert was on the verge of recommending that Rep. David Dreier of California assume most of the duties of majority leader.

Dreier is apparently a good friend of Bush, which probably gave him the early inside track. However, I bet that once the hamster that powers the collective Republican gaydar finally awoke from his nap and starting running again, they realized that they couldn't sacrifice the ultimate, core Republican principle--homophobia--by choosing Dreier as their new leader. For a party that in 2004 secured its greatest electoral victory ever by running on a platofrm of homophobia, it is really amazing how poor Republican gaydar actually is.

The biggest problem with Blunt? That he has the exact same ethical problems as DeLay. Fired Up America has the details:

Many people are aware of Jim Ellis, only because of his role in Texans For a Republican Majority.  Ellis, along with two other DeLay associates are currently under indicitment in Texas

However, most people are unaware that Ellis has extensive ties to both Tom DeLay and Roy Blunt that go back at least to 1999.

On May 26, 1999, Rep. Roy Blunt inaugurated the Rely on Your Beliefs Fund.  At that time, it was simply a non-federal leadership PAC.  It later became a 527.

In a May 30, 1999 St. Louis-Post Dispatch article, Jim Ellis is quoted as the PAC's coordinator(...)

In a December 8, 1999 National Journal story, Ellis was identified as:

Meanwhile, Jim Ellis - director of the federal and non-federal arms of House Majority Whip DeLay's Americans for a Republican Majority PAC and the Rely On Your Beliefs Fund sponsored by Chief Deputy Majority Whip Roy Blunt, R-Mo. - said the committees are concentrating on fundraising and keeping an eye on strong candidates at every level

There is a lot more where that came from on Blunt. The major problem facing Republicans and conservatives right now is that they have built a pwoerful movement largely through superior infrastructure and extensive coordination. However, extensive coordination has also resulted in a select handful of individuals, most notably Dick Cheney, Tom DeLay, Grober Norquist and Karl Rove, serving as the ultimate coordinators and gatekeepers of this movement. As a result, there is almost no one int eh conservative movement who DeLay is not already tied into. Thus, even as DeLay steps aside, he long reach has already tainted nearly everyone in the Republican leadership and the conservative movement.

With leaders like Cheney, Frist, Rove and DeLay, there is no escape from the Culture of Corruption for Republicans save total defeat and reorgnization. The gatekeepers are all knee-deep in it, and everyone else is knee deep in the gatekeepers. Because of their unprecedented power, it has become impossible for any Republican who ever wants to go anywhere to attack these leaders. Because of their unprecendented power, it has become impossible for almnost any Republican in office to extricate themsevles from the ethical problems of this select group. The gatekeepers are corrupt, and no one passes through untainted.

What Dreier Needs (none / 0)

Why doesn't Dreier just get himself a wife like the rest of the right-wing closet cases?  I doubt it's a matter of personal integrity.  Is he just too gay?

Gay Dave (none / 0)

Not sure if the gay Republican conspiracy works here. (Karl Rove or Ken Mehlman have been forced to step aside.)

Remember that Blunt is DeLay's chosen deputy, just as Hastert was picked by DeLay to be Speaker. Chris is accurate in saying that the Republican machine is so tied to this tiny nucleus that if these charges stick, you could have a relatively few number of trials bring everything down. If Rove also gets indicted next month...look out.

But nevertheless I don't think Dreier wanted this job. He's content to let Blunt crash and burn between now and 2006 so that the election provides a true change in leadership. Dreier is big (and we mean big) on whoring out to China and moving the economy "forward". He has a slightly different (and some might say vanguard) view of conservative dominance so it's no surprise that no one in DeLay's circle wanted him to take over.

This ought to be interesting as hell to watch though. The DeLay Machine betting the house on 2006 with Dreiercrats and Democrats hoping for failure....

I have the Ultimate Collection and knew it was from a song, I just couldn't remember which.

However, Beatles rule all bands!

Re: the who? (none / 0)

Beatles are great, but I will take Pink Floyd any day of the week if I had to pick just one.  Dark Side of the Moon is still one of the best albums ever... although Revolver is a pretty close second (followed by Nevermind... had to get the 90's in there).

Re: the who? (none / 0)

Sgt Pepper over Revolver?  You are nuts... SP is a great album, don't get me wrong and a very significant one historically, but as a pure album, Revolver is the best the beatles have ever done.

My Picks...

Revolver
Sgt Pepper
White Album

Re: the who? (none / 0)

That's cool, I just seldom hear the beach boys in discussions of greatest bands or albums is all.  Just surprised me.

He is on Nightline now... pretty good interview.  Hit the culture of corruption theme, sounded the drum for change in Washington.  Nice Job, Howard Dean.

This list is wrong (none / 0)

The list reads:

Cheney
Frist
Rove
Norquist

But the list should actually read -

Rove
Cheney
Norquist
Gingrich

The whole frist thing is partisan, its a minor sale of stock. 50k is nothing. The guy was actually liquidating his own stock to clean house and not selling short or in advance of bad news. It will be dismissed because it has no merit.

Look at the list chris - Rove is at the top of the list, not in the middle - a former chairman of the Republican Party - a campaign manager - the man who masterminded smear campaigns as far back as Nixon, and inherits much of his work from Nixon. All of his tactics from Nixon. Karl Rove.

Then check the substition I made to your list: the guy who masterminded the attack politics that very well helped found Moveon as a response simply because it was televised, hyped, and out of control.

You included the freak Grover Norquist of ATR, did you forget that Newt works with Norquist at his office?

The list is: Rove, Cheney, Norquist, and Gingrich.

Re: This list is wrong (none / 0)

I think you are wrong about Frist.  I doubt it will be dismissed without merit... but you are right in that it happens all the time.  My guess is that he cops a plea.  This could hurt his already slim 2008 chances though and is a great banner for 2006.

Wha? (none / 0)

"The guy was actually liquidating his own stock to clean house and not selling short or in advance of bad news."

WtF are you talking about? It happened during a big insider selloff preceding a bad-news earnings report. At the very best, Frist did what Martha Stewart did, and should spend at least as much time in prison as she did.

Yeah, I'm cynical.

good post but:... (none / 0)

I rarely post on blogs but i really enjoy reading them.  This may seem trivial but I can handle a mistyped word here and there, but the numerous misspelled words in this post completely distracted me this time.  I understand that blogs are meant to be written fast and without concern about spelling and grammatical errors.  The misspelled words here were obviously due to the quickness with which the post was created, and i understand that.  However, for me, the inaccuracies detracted from what I consider to be an extremely important topic.  Thank you.
