Back in March, I threw my hands up in the air and
gave up on our latest crop of anti-war protests. Then, August came along, and
with effective new tactics Cindy Sheehan revitalized my faith in them to such a degree that I have attended a couple of anti-war demonstrations over the past month. Now, I really believe that the big rally in Washington tomorrow, which is the culmination of Cindy Sheehan's post-Crawford nationwide campaign, is a major test for the anti-war majority. If we run it the way Cindy has been running things, we will succeed in increasing our public influence. If we run it the way the deluded, totalitarian fuckwads over at ANSWER have been fucking things up (yeah, I don't like them very much), the anti-war majority could hit another recession when it comes to influencing both the public and elected officials.
Now, I have heard that ANSWER has the permits for tomorrow's rally, so my hopes are not high. If that is the case, the chances are pretty good that the crowd will be harangued by endless speeches that inform us that those attending the rally are racists if they don't provide material support to the insurgency in the Philippines. However, in the hope that those attending the demonstration can rise above the incompetence of its organizers, Boulder, Colorado activist EMRosa offers some useful advice. I'll just provide some of the bullet points. Go read the entire article for a full description of each idea.
First, here are the dont's:
- Don't have a gothic pagan chorus on the stage talking about mermaids.
- Don't talk about gay rights or other issues that have little to do with the Iraqi invasion.
- Don't use the slogan "No Blood For Oil!" (it's played out)
- Don't set up a fucking T-shirt stand selling Anti-Bush propaganda made in Hanes sweatshop factories.
- Don't talk for an hour and a half, leaving supporters standing.
- Don't wear black bandanas or gas masks.
Here are the do's:
- Do have police monitors in the march.
- Do invite organizations with free food to attend
- Do be serious
- Do be creative
- Do have citizen journalists on site
Please attend this rally if you can, but always remember the shared goal of the overwhelming majority of the people who attend the protest: to end the war in Iraq. Remember also the reasons why this disaster must come to an end, and the bills that will be paid in blood if it does not. Remember these things, and solemnly go about the task of making the protest as affective as possible. Everyone in America has both a right to protest and to let their freak flag run high up the flagpole, but simply proving that you have the ability to do those things and that you like doing those things is not as important as ending the war. This is serious business, and it needs to be treated as such. Cindy Sheehan knows this, and that is why her innovative tactics have been so successful. Support her, and remember that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
