The Liberal Blogosphere for Hurricane Relief

Hurricane Katrina has devastated thousands of lives. Today, we're announcing a coordinated effort by the liberal/progressive blogosphere to help the victims of the devastation. Together, we're going to raise $1 million for the American Red Cross - and prove that the liberal blogosphere can help our fellow citizens in need. Make a donation for hurricane relief.

As President Clinton once said, "There's nothing wrong with America that can't be fixed by what's right with America."

The most prominent lefty blogs in the nation, represented by the Liberal Blog Advertising Network, are leading the way by running donated ads and asking readers to join us in making a difference. Combined, these blogs will display their ads over 12 million times each week over the course of the campaign.

Of course, we invite all progressive bloggers to participate in our community-wide campaign - both BlogAds subscribers and non-subscribers. Get the HTML to post the ads on your own blog or website.

This effort is a combined effort of four organizations:

All of the proceeds will be sent to the Red Cross. Donations are being tracked by Drop Cash. Transactions are secured through Paypal. You can be certain that your contribution will be secure, for a good cause, and people will know it came from the liberal blogosphere.

Thank you. Together, we can do this.

Best,
Kari Chisholm, Mandate Media
Chris Bowers, MyDD.com, Liberal Blog Ad Network

And Kari, and everyone else. We don't have blogads, but we can definitely promote this on our blog and at Pacific Northwest Portal. A great idea!

An Appropriate Theme Song: Too Much Rain (none / 0)

Audio Sample:  http://zip.spiritz.net/chaos/toomuchrain.mp3
(Album will be released Sept. 13th)

Too Much Rain
(Paul McCartney)

Laugh, when your eyes are burning
Smile, when your heart is filled with pain
Sigh, as you brush away your sorrow
Make a vow, that's it's not going to happen again

It's not right, in one life
Too much rain

You, know the wheels keep tur-ning
Why, do the tears run down your face
We, use to hide away our fee-lings
But for now, tell yourself it won't happen again

It's not right, in one life
Too much rain

It's too much for anyone, Too hard for anyone
Who wants a happy and peaceful life
You've gotta learn to laugh

(guitar solo)
Smile, when your spinning round and round
Sigh, as you think about tomorrow
Make a vow, that your gonna be happy again

It's all right, in your life
No more rain

It's too much for anyone, Too hard for anyone
Who wants a happy and peaceful life
You've gotta learn to laugh

Would you hire George W Bush to be YOUR latex salesman?

Re: An Appropriate Theme Song: Too Much Rain (none / 0)

Its from Seinfeld--

George lied to unemployment and they will call Jerry's house as his employer and Jerry is supposed to answer "Vandelay Industries"- George tells Jerry they are importers/exporters of latex and George will be their salesman.

George is on the toilet when the phone rings, and Kramer answers instead of Jerry- Kramer starts telling them they have a wrong #, George's friend lives here, etc. George runs out of the bathroom, pants down, screaming, he trips, and is lying on the floor when Jerry stands over him and says:

And you want to be my latex salesman.

Would you hire George W Bush to be YOUR latex salesman?

Kari and Chris (none / 0)

Great work both of you.   I run Philadelphia's Blog Ad Network ( http://www.blogads.com/advertise/philadelphia_regional_blogs/order) and second largest regional network) and would like the ad submitted to our members so that we can help in the effort.  Let us know how we can spread the word.

Thanks,
Karl

Great work (none / 0)

Happy to run the ad at my little blog too (www.realvalues.blogspot.com)

Good to see that the liberal blogosphere is rallying to help folks while Homeland Security Sec Chertoff is trying to blame the victims:

How? (none / 0)

If I wanted to run the ad on one of my blogs, how would I do that? Pretend I'm totally clueless about such things, which I am, but that I am sincerely interested in helping out with whatever minimal visibility my blog can offer.

Re: How? (none / 0)

The simplest way is this:

In the place where you have, and can change, the links, just put in the HTML for the graphic on top of it.  The HTML is here.

On blogger it requires you going into the bowels of the site, but its not difficult.  Undoubtedly one of your team knows how to do it because you have changed things in the side bars already.

Great Idea But Steer Clear Of Red Cross... (2.00 / 1)

I saw the Director of the Red Cross on the Today Show this morning. She seemed the epitome of "Elizabeth Doledom" with her pearls and public relations bs speak. I was going to give to the Red Cross but now I think I'll look for another worthy charity. She surely turned me off from contributing to the Red Cross. She had no human feeling. She was all about promoting the Red Cross and how great they are but gave no real information. She, like Bush, appeared "inauthentic." I suggest giving the money to Second Harvest... America's Second Harvest

Re: Great Idea But Steer Clear Of Red Cross... (none / 0)

Come on...

This is a relief effort of massive proportions and this is what the Red Cross does.

I'm not going to decide on where to donate based on the "humaness" of the director on TV.  It about getting the work done.

The ONLY organization that I will give to for this disaster is the Red Cross.

the other side (none / 0)

This is great.

Does anyone know if there is something equivalent on the conservative side? Certainly, everyone can agree on hurricane relief.

It would be great if we could get a friendly competition going and channel some of that blogosphere animosity into a good cause.

Adding it to your blog (none / 0)

Hey all -- If you want to add it to your own blog, you can either just copy and paste the HTML from here - or, if you're a BlogAds subscriber, contact me here with your free-ad-code and I'll post it on the ad.

If you're a BlogAds subscriber, the latter is preferred so that we can update the graphics in a few days.

So is Paypal taking a cut or not? (none / 0)

"All proceeds will be sent" is different from "100% of your contribution will be sent".  I know if I give through the Red Cross site or Amazon all of my money is going to the RC and to no one else.  If Paypal isn't waiving its fees then basically donors are diverting some of their generosity to Paypal merely to boost the image of liberal blogs and the four organizations ablove.

All funds go to Red Cross (none / 0)

We've had some questions - so let me be clear about one thing:

All funds - minus credit card processing fees from PayPal - are going to the Red Cross.

by karichisholm on Thu Sep 01, 2005 at 01:58:16 PM EST

PayPal fees (none / 0)

...and we're working on getting PayPal to waive some of their fees.

FYI - even if you give money directly through the Red Cross, a portion goes to whoever is processing their credit cards.  PayPal tends to be lower than most nonprofit's credit card transaction rates.

Prove? (3.00 / 1)

Excellent idea and definitely a worthy cause! The only wording I question in the ad is this: "prove that the liberal blogosphere can help our fellow citizens."

Is the reason we are doing this to prove that we can help our fellow citizens? Do we really have anything to prove? Can't we just do it because it is the right thing to do?

by Len on Thu Sep 01, 2005 at 04:52:12 PM EST

Thanks for the HTML (none / 0)

I had been over at Mandate Media earlier and didn't see a link for the HTML for the ad.

good job guys, (none / 0)

but several blogs have already responded to the skippy challenge (posted on mydd last night) without going through your paypal thingie...

so several thousands of dollars have been contributed without getting counted on your tote board...

but as long as the folks in need get relief, it doesn't matter whose tote board is the biggest!

"blogtopia - yes, i coined that phrase!"

Send in a Cruise Ship! (none / 0)

A caller on Larry King suggested that a cruise company could send a ship to the area to help house refugees.  Yes, it would cost a lot, and no, I don't expect any of them to do it out of Christian charity, but I think the positive publicity the first company to get in their would earn would be worth more than a year's adveritising budget.

Let's suggest to these folks that they can do very well by doing a lot of good here.
