It is sad; it kind of makes me cry. I used to be mad at this administration, about the direction of the country, about the people who would vote for Bush, but now, I think I'll concentrate on showing Republicans how to be real Christians and real patriots. Pray for those in LA, MS and AL. Peace.

Bush doesn't care! Remember the hurricane in Florida just before the election? Bush couldn't get in enough pictures with those voters in Florida. Now he doesn't give a shit. He probably feels that he is president and he can do what he wants-golf, guitars, and talks about Iraq. He is not dealing with reality. What ceo would run away from a tragedy that invoved his/her employees? This is exactly what he is doing---running away from dealing with tragedy.

The Bush family owns interests in oil companies. Perhaps Bush's delay was in a hope that oil production would be interrupted for a short time, making prices go up. He just forgot that there were people down there where is oil refineries were. Or maybe he didn't care, after all, most of those folks didn't have cars to fill up with his precious gas.
Wouldn't it be nice to have a government that was truly "For the people?

...until he realizes that it will take well over $1000.00 per Katrina refugee per month to facilitate food, health, shelter, sanitation, and general welfare.

That will be at least $1.5 Billion a month that will go to basic services in refugee camps and shelters outside of New Orleans.

Over 1.2 million Katrina refugees. Perhaps $16-20 Billion over the next 12 months to provide basic services for United States citizens.

Of course, most Katrina refugees are the poorest of the poor in this country. If you've ever been to New Orleans (outside the French Quarter), you understand. Lord forbid if such complete and irreversible destruction ever happened in a predominately Caucasian demographic.

We work hard to recruit and enlist our less fortunate to fight and die for our country. Yet we hesitate to provide basic and dignified services for our least fortunate.

But at least McCain got a cake, and Bush a new guitar. So why should we be so upset?

Suffering is suffering

The people of New Orleans did not vote for Bush but voted heavily for Kerry (151,000 to 41,000). The people in Louisiana who voted for Bush were in the outlying districts.

The people Bush is partying with all have white skin. The people shown in the pictures suffering from Katrina all have dark skin. I want to say something really catty but will refrain.

The lesson of Bush II is that public opinion only matters during the month or two of either congressional and/or [residential elections. And he believes that can be manipulated.

I just heard a reference to it on the Stephani Miller show this morning. It's the same story we have heard for so long on so many issues.

The focus for a day or two, perhaps the rest of the week will be on relief efforts. Then the RWNM will fall into it's usual practice of shifting responsibility from Bush and discounting any criticism.

Right. And when the liberal blogospher starts going crazy about this (like we did with Jeff Gannon or the DSM), the MSM will finally relent and start asking some questions.

Of course it will go something like this:

Timid Journalist A will ask Timid Journalist B if perhaps the federal gov't or Bush admin could be responsible for this. Timid Journalist B will respond that no one could have predicted this. End of segment.

Timid Journalist A will bring on Aggressive Wingut A. Timid Journalist A will ask the same question, and Aggressive Wingnut A will assert that anyone saying that is ridiculous, that no one could have predicted or prevented this, and to say so is politicizing the debate, and that the only reason it's being said is because the Democrats don't stand for anything, and then will accuse Timid Journalist A of being sympathetic to the Democrats, at which point Timid Journalist A will tuck his/her tail between his/her legs and back off.

Finally, Joe Klein will weigh in with an essay in Time where he spends a couple of paragraphs talking about the horrible devestation, a couple more talking about how BushCo. might have been able to prevent it, and that questions should be asked about what mistakes were made -- and then spend most of the rest of the essay attacking Democrats/liberals for politicizing this tragedy, ending with a paragrpah about the horrible devestation and learning from "our" (BushCo's) mistakes.

Note that a Real Liberal will never be a part of these proceedings.

I don't know about the guitar that he is currently holding, but many country or blues musicians tune their guitars down a half step. If the guitar given to the President is in this tuning then that indeed would be a mighty fine sounding G chord. Which would be a good start to his wailing away at the the great standard, "Nobody knows the trouble I've seen." However I believe that this would be a performance that is mostly forced and contrived as Papa Bush has done his best to insure that Junior doesn't really have any trouble during his life. Must be nice to have a house to sleep in, medicine when you are sick and enough money to buy yourself an election or two.

How did Bush get ready for Katrina? (none / 0)

First, he made a lame statement on Saturday.

We cannot stress enough the dangers this hurricane poses to Gulf Coast communities. ... We'll do everything in our power to help the people and the communities affected by this storm."

My gosh, anyone half-heeding the meteorology reports knew this was going to be A BIG ONE. Bush should have been working with the governors and mayors to give a shout on media at people to "Get out now!" If he had used his voice effectively, doubtlessly it would have saved lives.

And how did Bush prepare for the looming catastrophe and "do everything in [his] power" to help the people? Did he mobilize resources to help evacuate people. No, he made a self-serving PR trip instead.

On Sunday while Katrina was just hours away from landfall, he flew to Arizona Bush to Arizona and California promoting new Medicare prescription-drug benefits for senior citizens.

My gosh, this is like August 2000 all over again...only worse. Back then, Bush was given the infamous memo warning of Al Queda operations in the U.S. and we know he didn't do squat.

Now we are in August 2005 and the worse natural disaster in modern U.S. history was looming on the horizon, posing not only to kill people but severely disrupt a vital portion of the national shipping and petroleum industries. And Bush again did nothing other than speak a lame script that was bereft of a tone of actual urgency.

Of course he couldn't turn the storm away but why wasn't he helping to mobilize federal resources and the Army BEFORE storm hit rather than wait three days afterward?

If Bush were a farmer, all of his horses would be gone far from the barn before he'd ever react. If Bush were a CEO in charge of a corporation, the company would be falling into bankruptcy before he would decide to cancel his vacation or a golf outing to react.

He has NO concept of leadership.

You may criticize me for taking 20/20 hindsight but folks, Bush is supposed to lead not react. If Katrina was an rogue airplane loaded with a bomb irreversibly heading for the levees of New Orleans, would Bush have interrupted his schedule to do some aftermath planning? You betcha (and he would have crowed about it). Yet in his own words, Katrina was a predicted to be a Cat 5 hurricane and he apparently did nothing. What was he thinking?

Bunch goes on to cite a number of articles in various publications that lay out a story about project funding that is, in retrospect, horrifying. As of early 2004, the Lake Pontchartrain and Vicinity Hurricane Protection project was "about 20% incomplete due to lack of funds." The administration's 2005 budget underfunded the project by roughly $16 million. Last summer, with debts mounting on the project, the Army Corps of Engineers requested and received about $2.25 million from a local Louisiana levee agency (which had to be covered by a local property tax hike). This spring, the Bush administration proposed "the steepest reduction in hurricane- and flood-control funding for New Orleans in history." SELA's budget was slashed by over two-thirds. In late September, just after Hurricane Ivan, SELA sought to at least get more money for studies regarding hurricane preparedness. New Orleans' Times-Picayune pointed out the reason that the money was unavailable: "the cost of the Iraq war forced the Bush administration to order the New Orleans district office not to begin any new studies, and the 2005 budget no longer includes the needed money, he said."

The destruction could not have been prevented, but the failure of judgment and priorities is clear. It looks like we'll get a good lesson in how hurrican preparedness plans are deficient.

It looks like the family values crowd is having some difficulty deciding who to blame for Hurricane Katrina:

In 1998, Republican icon Pat Robertson warned that hurricanes were likely to hit communities that offended God. Perhaps it was Barbour's memo that caused Katrina, at the last moment, to spare New Orleans and save its worst flailings for the Mississippi coast.

I must have missed the part about Kennedy. I'm a little bit slow on the uptake and a pretty poor reader. Maybe you could point it out to me.

I read Robert Kennedys's remarks and I am not ready to back him up on the global warming being responsible for this specific disaster remark. Then again, I don't know for sure if he is wrong. Either way, you won't see me defending him on that remark.

I am willing to criticize Blanco. I don't see any republicans ready to criticize Bush. Look at Bush's actions in the last 7 days and tell me if he truly gave this the most urgency. Whether you think Sheehan is a kook or not, Bush wasted time playing spin games with her , doing other political stuff, when he should have made, at the time, upcoming hurricane his major priority(do you think an average American feels better that he dies in a hurricane compared to a terrorist bombing).

As far as the levy repair or something similar not being part of the plan until 2006 or later, are we saying that a hurricane striking a year earlier takes Bush off the hook? The fact is he wasnt going to do anything about it even if he had more time.

And if the US should spend that much money rebuilding New Orleans? I don't think so. But it is a historic city and lots more money have been spent on other useless reclamation projects. I personally thin the money going for the Iraq war and reconstruction firms is a money pit.

Only four days? His reaction to Katrina was slower than his response to 9/11. Maybe in addition to reading Salt he was re-reading My Pet Goat.

Bush dropped the ball as usual. This is the most incompetent administration in American history. The Teapot Dome Scandal was a tempest in a tea pot compared to Enron, Abu Ghraib, Gitmo and whole sorry saga documented in The Torture Papers.

Pat Buchanan is calling for Bush's impeachment. There are at least four legitimate impeacheable offenses in addition to immigration that Bush could be tried on:

Lying to Congress about WMD to take the country to war

Abu Ghraib

Gitmo

Possible involvement of his highest advisors in CIA outing

Are you kidding me? We have never had an administration as corrupt from top to bottom as this one. Not even close.

A real president would'nt let 10,000 people die he would be there less than a minute after the storm left he would have sent public transit to get people out of there before and after. But our President is a fool and a man who thinks of Blacks as 3/5ths a person. Also he's Response took longer than the Response to the tsunami and that was over what 5,000 miles away? LA is in our back yard!!!!! funny how he came to my state FL a day later during 2004 when there was an election heh.

Now, that Bush is completely disinterested in protecting America against actual (as opposed to invented) threats, that sentiment is everywhere. Why don't you address that instead of whatever it is you think you're addressing?

I use this page to browse and find where I left off, then move forward through the diaries to the present.

But you know what? Your constant self-promotion is annoying me to the point where I'm going to make sure not to recommend any of your diaries.
