The 100 People Who Are Screwing Up America

There's a new right-wing book out called 100 People Who Are Screwing Up America. Markos makes the list at #52, James Wolcott at #64, and Katha Politt at #74. Go bloggers, but I have to say I am disappointed I failed to make it (maybe someday). By the way, that makes Markos and Wolcott greater threats than David Duke according to the author. I have included the list in the extended entry.

Anyway, its counter-list time. List off as many names of people who you think are "screwing up" America. Remember--they don't just have to be political,a nd they don't have to just be Republicans.

Re: I'd also add... (3.00 / 1)

I agree with Crhis.  While people like Chris Berman and Dick Vitale can be pretty annoying at times, I really can't argue that they really love what they do and for the most part seem to know what they are doing.  That is something that can't be said about many people, especially perceived know-it-alls like Jim Rome who embodies virtually every negative sterotype about sports that one can generate.

I guess I can accept that.  But the next time he describes a homer as being "halfway to [the next state]!!", only for it to land in the first row of seats, remember that you called him knowledgable, and hang your head in shame.

This isn't ranked, but here goes (2.66 / 3)

Obviously, Osama Bin Laden. If we're just talking about Americans, Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, almost anyone on CNN, Roger Ailes, James Dobson, Rupert Murdoch, Pat Robertson, Tim LaHaye, Walmart's executives, Jerry Falwell, Antonin Scalia, George Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Tom DeLay, almost anyone on MTV, Michael Bay, (I'd say Jerry Bruckheimer, but The Amazing Race is a force for good). Martin Lawrence, Vin Diesel, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Grover Norquist, Stephan Moore, Ralph Reed, Bill Donohue.

As for Democrats and the like, Michael Moore certainly isn't helping. Joe Lieberman is undermining Democratic unity. But I can't think of any Democrats who are doing as much as any of the above to screw us up.

What I Mean Is That Michael Moore ROCKS! (none / 0)

If Michael Moore was on their side, none of them would ever write such a thing.  But we constantly find fault with our most effective spokespeople.

Look, I'm not saying that everyone should be like him.  I'm certainly not saying that he doesn't make mistakes.  He's human.  We all make mistakes.  But he goes all out and puts his heart on the line, and does it with a smile.  When no one else will speak up, he will.  And that creates a lot of space for other people to say and do whatever it is they have to say or do.

I just think it's a crying shame when people use that space to take pot shots at his back.  It doesn't hurt Michael Moore a bit.  But it damn sure hurts the rest of us.

Re: This isn't ranked, but here goes (none / 0)

Michael Moore is only a target because we let them (the right) attack the messenger and duck the content.

Michael Moor makes documentaries/movies/screeds/whatever and he clearly and openly has a point of view which he supports in his work. Rather than address the content, they attack the messenger and we let them shift the conversation. They think it's terrible to suggest that the administration is too cozy with th e Saudi's and that the Saudis are not behaving like friends. That's not wrong and it's not scandalous.

As my mother used to say "Consider the source."... but you have to also consider the content. If we let them villify people who have the balls to speak truth to power (Moore, Dean, Wilson, Clarke, O'Neil, etc...) then we are lost.

Re: Michael Moore? (none / 0)

Heck no...don't duck the content!  It's the CONTENT that makes Michael Moore a fool...or maybe he makes fools of the people who allow him to distort and take things out on context?  Calling President Bush a "liar?"  Really?  I think to lie about something means you knew it wasn't the truth...to find out you were wrong after the fact simply makes you incompetent.  Moore did a couple of really good things (the car thing and Bowling for Columbine) then destroyed all his credibility with his ridiculously distorted and outright false "evidence" of his stupid movie (yes...I watched it).  Remember what Will Rogers said: "believe 1/4 of what you hear, 1/2 of what you read, and 3/4 of what you see, and you'll be alright."   So many wannabe-ultra liberals take what Moore said at face value and began to rant and rave against our government and president.  All you need to do is a little online research to discredit nearly half of what he asserted in his "movie".  Looks like Will was right.  But if it fits what you want to believe, why seek the truth?   If you LOVE Michael Moore, you are no more guilty that President Bush of not seeking the FACTS.   Guess you have more in common with him than you thought (or would have liked).

Obviously, You Need To Find Out! (none / 0)

Who are these people? Hmmmm....

Eric Foner is one of America's top historians. Check out his wikipedia entry for a good intro, and/or check out his homepage.

Jane Smiley is one of America's top novelists. There's a bibliography here. A Thousand Acres is her retelling of Shakespear's Lear.  She also wrote a very sharp post-election election essay.

And Barbara Kingsolver is no slouch, either, though she admits she wrote her first novel in closet.

Excellent! (none / 0)

I have found a lot of cool and worthwhile stuff by checking out the people the blockheaded people who write stuff like this hate the most...

Their record is not perfect.. but its almost.. but every once in a very great while they will throw a 'real' evil person in there just so they can pretend they care about real right and wrong..

Lets toast to the right's anger..

I hope that the result of the right's extremism won't be extremism of the left.. like it was in Russia, China, North Korea, etc.. You know, the REAL 'leftists'.

(To the hope killers out there.. Thats what happens when people really give up hope.. FYI.
Its not pretty.

The "right's anger?'  The only ones you hear that are saying I HATE this person or I HATE that person are on the far (and not so far) left.  If the Democrats don't start distancing themselves from the fringe element, we run the risk of becoming irrelevant (yes...I'm a democrat).  And if you just HATE what I said or HATE me for saying it...well...we all know where you belong.

Re: David Broder (none / 0)

Forgot to include Milton Friedman, Jude Wasinski, George Gilder, George H.W. and Barbara Bush, and Katherine Harris.  Friedman's economics have been used to justify screwing people left and right and also have glorified the "investor" (aka stock market speculator) at the expense of everybody else. Wasinski popularized that nonsense along with George Gilder in separate books during the Reagan era, the Bushes raised some crummy and selfish children, and Harris is self-explanatory.

Re: John Kerry? (none / 0)

Remember, though, neither John Kerry nor the Clintons are named, most likely so the author can use that fact to claim legitimacy to his list (in other words, to assert he isn't just going after the most visible leaders on the other side).  Of course, that's exactly what he's doing, but that won't stop him from saying otherwise.

OK...here's a funny true story about the NRA.  Several years ago they sent me a questionairre...one of those with the questions worded so obviously pro-gun that you'd seem like a pro-communist flaming liberal tre-hugger if you said no... Qustions like:
1. Do you believe that it is the duty of every American citizen to protect their country and support the Second Amendment by owning a gun?  Check Yes__ or No__.

Well...I checked all the no's (anyway, I actually think gun ownership is protected by the 9th, not the 2nd).   I sent it back (enclosed NO money)..chuckling to myself...feeling self-righteous... and yep..sure enough...two weeks later in the mail came my new membership card for the NRA.   I still have it.

The Bush Family
The Bush Administration
The People who want Marijuana to stay illegal
and of course
Any extreme right-wing who believe it is their job to tell everyone what to do (i.e. In our country we have the freedom to be whatever religion we want - well then why doesn't it feel that way...because the right-wing assholes like to push their views onto everyone and they try to pass laws going against the Consitution - i.e. Gay Marriage and Anti-Abortion laws...Gay marriage is only wrong in religious views...but we have the freedom to be whatever the f*ck religion we want and the same goes for Prolife - in who's eyes is it wrong? God's? Well, God isn't an American citizen and not everyone in this country needs to believe in him)

A Note - A am a Christian and I'm straight but I think personal freedoms whould not be taken away...why is it that in this country...where we are suppose to be free...we opress certain people? We did it to the African Americans and now we are doing to the Homosexuals and Pro-choice Americans. But I am guessing in 10 years people will be talking about how in the past we opressed these people and now we celebrate their differences...because that is what always happens. Now we celebrate that there are people of different races in our country but in the past we frowned on it. I only hope that the same thing happens in the present day situation.

100 people screwing up America (none / 0)

Did everyone forget Bernard Goldberg as one fo the 100 people screwing up America.  I watched him on the Daily Show last night, he was very combative and couldn't justify any of his arguments. Jon Stewart smacked him down pretty good but he tried to give him a chance to explain himself. Once Bernie couldn't then Stewart shut him down, for good reason.  Just goes to show that if we had more Stewarts in the Democratic party we would be back in power.
by orbitis1058 on Thu Jul 14, 2005 at 01:54:49 PM EST

Re: 100 people screwing up America (none / 0)

Jon Stewart is just funny, and you have to play along...no matter what.  I saw O'Reilly and McCain on Jon Stewart...they went along and were absolutely great.  How about the other show where they invited him to discuss his book with a balanced panel?  A "balanced" panel of 5 who all attacked HIM?  What do you expect him to do?  I would have walked out....but of course we don't expect a "balanced" panel of liberals to be fair.  Who was the dumb broad he had to ask to shut up?  several times...then the host jumped on him...and the broad wouldn't shut up even then.  Every time he tried to speak...she jumped in louder and more shrill than ever.  I think this is a rude and self-deprecating liberal tactic today...close your ears and shout down anyone you disagree with.  I think they assume if they talk the loudest and are the most rude, everyone will think their points valid.  If they only realized the perceptions of the viewer were in direct confrontation with their hopes.
