NY-Gov: Spitzer Wins

Well, that was easy:
NY1 News has learned that George Pataki will announce Wednesday that he will not seek a fourth term as governor of New York State.

Sources tell NY1 that Pataki will make the announcement Wednesday afternoon in Albany.

Of course, Spitzer would have won anyway. Now, whoever the New York Republican Party throws up will get utterly slaughtered. Eliot Spitzer will be a major force in national politics for years, if not decades, to come.

This is all good (none / 0)

but don't get cocky- there are other races next year which a good Democratic turnout could help - especially in the House of Rep

LOL, love the headline: Spitzer wins (none / 0)

I think this just about wraps the race up. It's like Obama all over again.

Re: LOL, love the headline: Spitzer wins (none / 0)

That about nails it. Spitzer and Obama are both considered strong future Presidential candidates for a reason.

Re: LOL, love the headline: Spitzer wins (none / 0)

Absolutely. And the "blue state rule" (don't nominate a candidate from an already blue state) would be overruled, because, for example, if Obama could get 70% in a state that is only 55% Democratic, he obviously has some crossover appeal.

BTW, I haven't heard former Sen. Al D'Amato (R-N.Y. and sleazebag) mentioned as a possible candidate to take on Hillary in '06. Why? Is he retired?

It's too bad D'Amato isn't running. I grew up waiting for him to lose. To see him get beat twice would rule.

And yes he is not a member of the DLC.  In fact he asked to be taken off their list of "must watch democrats."

Can someone get Pataki to stay? (none / 0)

I stand by my belief that 2006 could be a good year to get the GOP to waste money on hopeless races.

For some reason, the GOP has a major hard-on for NY.  Maybe it's the last vapors from Al D'Amato?

It would be nice to see them plow some cash into an unwinnable race.

Ummm Guliani anyone? (none / 0)

Doesn't this clear the way for Guliani to run?  If he does, Spitzer will clearly have his hands full.

Then again Rudy might be looking to run for POTUS.  Anyone know how many times he's stepped foot in Iowa and New Hampshire this year?

Guiliani is already engaged an exploring a POTUS run. Governor of New York si currently not on his radar.

Guiliani has said several times before -- and again today, after the announcement -- that he has no intentions to run for governor.

like Cuomo was gonna be, right?

And is the "liberal" New York City ever going to have a Democrat mayor again?

by peterbernard on Wed Jul 27, 2005 at 08:10:33 AM EST

Re: Yeah a force for decades (3.00 / 1)

What's the " " around liberal for anyways?  A city that went 85% to 15% for Kerry is pretty f-ing liberal.

NYC hasn't had a "republican" mayor in years. No matter who rudy shills for he doesn't share the beliefs of most of the party and bloomberg only switched so he didn't have to run through the dem primary gauntlet.  NYers appreciate someone who can get shit done (thus the Spitzer love) and lately the NYC dems have all been too much in the hands of local community boards and advocacy groups to affect any change in the city.

Re: Yeah a force for decades (none / 0)

Totally Agree. I think Bloomberg is actually doing a good job. A lot of my NYC liberal, Democratic, and left leaning independent friends seem to think the same way too.  His overall management skills are great.

Grudge (none / 0)

I was a NY resident for years, and I very much admire and respect Mr. Spitzer's work as Attorney General, but I still bear a grudge against him for his comments a couple of years back...

The original article has been taken off the newsday site, but I find quotes all over the place, most damningly this:

"Spitzer, one of few Democrats who did support the war, said he disagrees with Dean and that photos of mass graves being dug up in Iraq prove his point - and the point of many Americans. `I do not support Dean, although I like him enormously as a person. I would not support somebody who was wrong on that fundamental issue (war), and, secondly, because he is unelectable."

Yes, I was (and still am) a huge Dean supporter, but mostly this comment bother sme because of his comment about the war.

Anyway, I don't think one should throw the baby out with the bathwater.  For the most part Spitzer is the kind of Democrat I like, and as those are few and far between I fully throw my support behind him for governor of NY.

But I still have a funny taste in my mouth.

Re: Grudge (none / 0)

Oh, I didn't know about Eliot Spitzer's position on the Iraq war. BTW, what is the skinny on those mass graves? Does anybody know the hard facts concerning them (i.e. wading through the crapshoot MSM coverage)? i.e. data such as what is the estimated number of people found dead in such mass graves? Where are they found, and to what point are they dated to have occured? How may of them were military mass-burials (from the Iran/Iraq war, from the 1991 war, and the present war)?

My suspicion is that if they were as many mass-grave victims that are terminated as part of political persecution and dictatorial brutality, as the news coverage once suggested (which may be what Spitzer was refering to), the Bush badministration would have continuously paraded that to generate sympathy for the war. Since they didn't do that for too long, I suspect that most of what we saw re. mass-graves was spin, but solid facts will change my mind on it.

I will give Spitzer a pass on the Dean comment (none / 0)

I wasn't aware of Spitzer's position on the war. His statement is ridiculous. However, he has accomplished something concrete in NY, which is something you can't say for most democrats like Hillary.

Spitzer is the democrat of the year, in my opinion. What he is doing in NY shows things can be done if you have an iota of integrity.

Bloomberg (none / 0)

He has done an outstanding job of mayor.  He has the ability like Rudy to get things done, but without all the grandstanding, vindictiveness and thirst for attention.  It's actually strange to watch Bloomberg as mayor because he doesn't act like a politican.  He takes his job seriously and doesn't have any axes to grind.  He's Republican in name only.

Pataki, Giuliani and Bloomberg will not run (none / 0)

After Pataki's announcement today, various media outlets are reporting that aides to Giuliani and Bloomberg have said their bosses will not run. Both Giuliani and Bloomberg have previously said they have no intentions of seeking the governorship in 2006.

With the New York Republicans' Big Three out of the running that makes previous rumblings of former Massachusetts governor William Weld and billionaire Tom Golisano much more serious.

Golisano worries me. He formed the Independence Party and has run for governor three times now. His 2002 bid nabbed 15% of the vote. If he can win the Republicans nomination -- though I honestly don't know enough about him to say that he'd want it -- then Spitzer has a serious challenger.
