The National Nurse: a serious proposal getting serious attention

THE NATIONAL NURSE: A SERIOUS PROPOSAL GETTING SOME SERIOUS ATTENTION

Oregon's Teri Mills, whose name many of you may recognize from the Howard Dean presidential campaign has recently garnered a great deal of attention for a great idea.

Mills has proposed the creation of the office of National Nurse. In a widely-circulated op-ed that appeared in the New York Times and reprinted in the Oregonian. Mills suggests that the office would dramatically improve America's health care system by re-focusing efforts on prevention. As Teri has stated repeatedly: "What we need is a system focused on health care. What we have is a system focused on sick care."

Mills' piece has been read into the Congressional Record, thanks to Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), and the idea has garnered enough attention that she will be traveling to WA DC with the National Nurse Team to lobby Congress to introduce legislation for an Office of the National Nurse. Why do nurses hate America?

"What we need ..." (none / 0)

"... is a system focused on health care. What we have is a system focused on sick care."   True.  Nurses deal with the human side of life; not just the 'patient in room 234' side.  Teri is right.  We need a national nurse.

Clarification (none / 0)

Just wanted to clarify that I did not personally write what I've posted here. I'm just helping Teri out by posting it for her. As a fellow Deaniac from way back, I'm really proud of the persistence she has shown with this issue, and also a wee bit jealous that she was able to take such a wonderful picture with Howard Dean. ;-)

Great Picture! (none / 0)

If Renee is jealous, then I'm MORE jealous.  Teri, I hope you have that photo is a special frame somewhere.

America's Nurse Has Struck A Chord (none / 0)

First, Renee and Donna,

Don't be too jealous.  I was so lucky to get this picture!!  Yes, it is framed and on my fireplace mantel.

Nurses across the country have expressed delight with the proposed Office of the National Nurse.  One woman sent me a postcard from Massachussetts, another nurse emailed me that he had posted the NY Times op/ed in the Operating Room break area and how all the nurses were saying it is the shot in the arm our country needs and that it is the BEST health care idea in years.

So let's make this happen.  Go to www.nationalnurse. info and click to sign the petition.
