Gotcha!

Hagel is the latest entry in the "OMG! Can you believe he said that!" wars:
Hagel, a top Senate Republican said to have presidential aspirations, said in an interview in US News and World Report, set to hit newsstands Monday, that US troops are "losing" the Iraq war, and that "things aren't getting better, they're getting worse."

"The White House is completely disconnected from reality," said Hagel. "It's like they're just making it up as they go along. The reality is that we're losing in Iraq," said Hagel, who added that increasingly, fellow Republicans are coming to share his view.

"More and more of my colleagues up here are concerned," he said.

Hagel can probably forget about the nomination after such comments. Also, while it is good to see some cracks showing in the Republican façade over Iraq, how often over the past month has a Comment by a major political figure or other been the big political news story of the day? We attack Santorum for the Nazi comments, wingers attack Reid over a comment about a judge, we attack Dobson and Robertson for comments they make, then comes Dean, then Durbin, and on and on and on. As much as I participate in these spin wars myself and as much as I will continue to do so, it is not hard to see how this sort of inane "Gotcha!" politics can turn off tens of millions of Americans to the point where they don't even bother becoming involved in the process.

Did anyone see my diary on this from last night?

"Completely Disconnected From Reality"

I think the second pull quote in it about Bush launching a PR camapaign rather than dealy with the situation in Iraq is telling, if not typical.

Witty comment goes here...

No, when somebody is *so* off course (none / 0)

we need to point it out or we are failing Americans and we deserve to lose..

With Durbin, just tell people to [read his comments in context..In the Senate record http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getpage.cgi?dbname=2005_record&page=S6594&position=a ll
].

Then his words, which I think were quite articulate, are shown for what they are, honest thoughts about a terrible situation, one that really transcends politics, from a real, true public servant.

"Out of touch with reality" I think describes it very well..

They think might makes right.. Maybe in Alice's looking glass world, but not in the USA.

Last night.. (3.00 / 1)

I noticed that a lot of people are trying to sow doubt and despair..

Trying to make us all think life is meaningless, and that it doesnt matter who wins in politics, that they are all the same..

A little bird came up to me and said.. "They want to kill democracy with fear"

And then it all made sense..

Listen to the little bird..

He doing a good job (3.00 / 1)

of positioning for '08, I think, while the majority of the public disapproves of both sides.

The Admin position is weakening by the day. He has the added advantage, if events keep turning, of telling the truth!

This isn't an off-the-cuff remark, politically. I'm sure it was well thought out.

He is likely taking over McCain's old position of a Republican with an independent streak.

Re: He doing a good job (none / 0)

Yeah I concur that this is him making sure to corner the market on the internationalist foreign policy- conservative economic policy niche.

He is running as an outsider to be sure...but if Iraq turns into Starship Troopers you can bet plenty of summer soldier Republicans will jump ship to the S.S. Hagel in a heartbeat. Too many of the big corporate lions are willing to say publicly "I told you so" in exchange for a man who won't be mistaken for some "big city liberal".

He's real trouble for just about any Democrat candidate, unless of course, the economy tanks worse than Iraq. Then any Democrat is real trouble for the GOP.

Hagel can probably forget about the nomination after such comments.

I wouldn't be too sure about that.

Lyndon Baines Bush (3.00 / 1)

From The Whiskey Bar:

Taliban guerrillas said Saturday that they had seized 30 policemen and a local official at a district headquarters building and planned to put them on trial for supporting the U.S.-backed government.

A senior police officer in Kandahar province confirmed that the main government building in Mian Nishin, capital of the district of the same name, was under Taliban control after attacks on Thursday and Friday nights.

"Shit, even Lyndon didn't manage to lose two wars."

If Hagel wasn't so tied to Diebold, I'd feel bad (none / 0)

Hagel is done in the GOP. He's broken the GOP's 11th commandment. Not only is his Pres. campaign over. He's gonna have to fight to keep his Senate Seat.

I'd feel bad, but Hagel connections to Diebold are wide and deep. I'm far more concerned about those connections than I'm encouraged by this statement on Iraq.

I congratulate him for admitting the truth. Maybe if he writes a book, I'll buy that book because he took that stand. However, those Diebold connections mean he has zero chance of ever getting a vote from me in even a late primary where the Dem nominee is already decided.
