Steele vs. Mfume

I have been wanting to write this for a long time so since it appears that Steele will run as a GOP candidate for MD Senate this is a good time.

Over the past several months Mfume has been getting bad press and as a result he is having trouble fundraising and his star is fading.

Progressives wake up.  This is a fight worth fighting.

Mfume is a true progressive--he is about as progressive as you can get without being Green.  
He walks the walk and talks the talk.

It is a mistake for Maryland progressives to let Mfume get away.  People should fight back.  This isn't just about a man.  This is about a black man.  

Mfume is being trashed becuase he is black--because the good ole boys in the MD Democratic party don't want a black Senator to represent them.  Period.

Mfume is completely qualified.  His resume is stellar.

The Senate deserves another African American.

Maryland, which is about one third African American, deserves a black Senator.  The Dems neeed to organize a black voting bloc.  This is a great opportunity.

The Dems should elect a black candidate to high office--don't let the rethugs do it again.

This isn't about what he did at NAACP.  If anything, he is guilty of nepotism, the woman he favored is the mother of his adopted child.  

Progressives should stand up for Mfume.

Steele is not the guy you want in the Senate (none / 0)

I am a Marylander. Lt. Gov Steele has been in concert with Ehlrich from day one. Running as a Norhteastern Moderate republican, Elhrich showed his true colors as soon as he got in office by reneging on the slots deal. Namely, when he campaigned he said that all money from the slots earmarked for education would go into a seperate account under the authority of the Maryland dept of educatiion. He gets into office and squelches by saying that the money would now go into the general fund under control of the governors office.
Then after HARD campaigning to put slots into lower income Black areas (against strong opposition from churches and local groups)  ,  Steele has the  audacity to tell local  Black COntractors that they should not  expect any type of special consideration in being awarded contracts, and that they should stop looking for handouts, becasue they can compete against white contractors.

Oh yeah, Steele is definitely a Republican.

who is the only one who can beat Steele.

I predict that there will be a new black Senator from Maryland come January 2007.

The question is will he be Rep. or Dem.?

I think Steele is beatable by anybody that the Maryland Democratic Party supports, even if he is white. PG County and Baltimore City won't be bamboozed by Steele twice. Expect O'Malley to have an unfair, mysterious advantage in the primaries.

Cardin could beat Steele (none / 0)

In fact, polls show, despite larger name recogniton by both Mfume and Steele, Cardin still beat both(Mfume in the primary, of course).

its not about who can beat steele.

Its about who is the true progressive.  That's Mfume.

I say go Cardin. Mfume has too much baggage, and Cardin has a lot of electoral strength. Steele could potentially beat Mfume. He won't beat Cardin.
