Paul Hackett for Congress

There are two Ohio based actions I would like you to take today. First, demand an investigation into Coin-gate, and second, support Paul Hackett--Chris

It is going to be an uphill battle, since the second district of Ohio is the most Republican district in the state. Paul Hackett is our nominee, and as difficult as this campaign will be, I have no doubt that he is a candidate that deserves the strong support of the netroots. For example, here are some things from Hackett's website. First, on Iraq, where Hackett served for seven months:

The fact of the matter is war is the result of political failure and every American has to share in that responsibility. Unfortunately the war in Iraq is not only a misuse of our military but has damaged our credibility throughout the world and needlessly squandered our political capital.
Next, on Social Security
Social Security is a promise made by our elected officials to us, the citizens of the United States. I don't break my promises and I expect the same from my government. Social Security is not broken but it can be improved and secured.(...)

There are too many complicated solutions to fixing social security. But I have another simple and straightforward solution: Instead of stopping Social Security withdrawals at $90,000, let's kick that number up to $150,000.

: On Healthcare:
We live in the greatest nation in the world. We have the best trained most sophisticated healthcare professionals in the world. There is no reason why all Americans shouldn't have affordable access to this system.

Rather than using our tax dollars for corporate welfare, the taxpaying citizens of this nation should have affordable access to our great healthcare infrastructure.

On the environment:
In 2000 the first hybrid cars hit the American market. I put my money where my mouth is and bought a hybrid that got over 65 mpg. I still drive a hybrid by a larger model now that I have three kids. I still average better than 50mpg.

Now hybrids are made in America, and yes they even make an SUV hybrid! It's the easiest way to cut America's fuel consumption. If you don't like what's going on in the Mid-east then pitch-in in a painless way.(...)

A few months back, when the gas topped out at $2.40 or $2.50, I didn't pay that price. I was in Iraq--I saw how high the price really was.

In the diaries, Democratic Avenger points out the following reasons to support Hackett:
  • 50 state strategy. If we are serious about running campaigns in all 50 states then we should start now and not a week from now. This what is happening now, I am tired of conceding Congressional elections, and given that our Candidate is working hard lets back him up : lets start the strategy.

  • Ohio This race isn't in some far away place, it is the most important state in the political world, it will be extremely difficult for our Presidential Candidate to win next time without Ohio, we have a governor's race and senate race here in less than 18 months, why not build the infrastructure now.

  • Special election/Primary Generally very few people vote in special elections and this gives us an edge to win a race we may not otherwise. In addition the contested Republican primary combined with the fact the Republican Candidate comes from a region of the District which is not the most populous, while our candidate is from that region, it is still is uphill but this means it is possible.

  • The opponent.Jean Schmidt is an ideologue, uninterested in asking questions , uninterested in working across the aisle, her goal is to go to congress to attack our strong Democratic women, she is pro-life official and will make her mission to end choice, not just a position but a crusade, this will make her an ineffective congresswomen who will always vote with this president, do we want to make our case against another rubberstamp.
Hackett's website offers a number of ways to take action. I urge you to visit his site and do just that.

Thank You! (none / 0)

I'm not involved in this particular Ohio race, but I thank you for the positive message.  I've made my financial contribution this morning and encourage others to do so.

There are others (no names here) who feel that investing in Paul Hackett is a waste of time given the make up of the district.

Quoting a guy I respect:

"You Can't Win If You Don't Play".

I'm glad to hear that others agree with this thinking.

There are several things that a good candidate (and his staff) can do to win this race:

  1.  Turn out your base.
  2.  Look for ticket splitters
  3.  Depress the opposition vote

The base ... Looking at the numbers, it is obvious that it is in Cincinnati (duh!) but the strongest overall Democratic precincts are 14B, 02E, 14E and 02C at 89.31%, 87.37%, 87.27% and 81.11%.  All four precicnts are trending Democratic over the last 3 cycles.  Get these people to the voting booth, no matter what you do.  Knock on every door.

Ticket splitters ... one measure of this is looking at the undervote for Charlie Sanders' run in 2004 against John Kerry.  In Blue Ash 05A, Kerry got 145 more votes in that precinct than Sanders.  Union Twp Ripley's undervote was 136 and Portsmouth 03D was 114.

These are people who are willing to vote for a Democrat at least at the Presidental level ... if the Hackett campaign can identify these areas (and I certainly have), given the lower turnout that a special will bring, he can win this race.

Those three precincts were lost by Kerry ... with 41.96%, 46.12% and 44.09% respectively.  That's not the point.  These are ticket spliters and may be persuaded.

Depressing the opposition vote ... well, we all know what that means!

Look at Paul bringing out the numbers :-)

For me the most striking thing about the race is the contrast in the candidates. You couldn't ask for anything better. As hard as it may be I think that you'd have to be crazy to look at the matchup, candidate vs. candidate, and not think that Paul has a chance. We just need to help get him out there. Sure it's a longshot... it's a gamble. But man, what a victory if we pull it off.

It can also be a victory even if he loses. Taht is something we must all try to learn.

Exactly!

From the beginning that's been my whole point behind setting up blogs focused on the Congressional districts. Even if you lose you make it easier for the races ahead.

Vote Totals? (none / 0)

Can't seem to find the raw vote totals on this race, just the percentages.  Can anyone provide a link?  The numbers are important to see how big a differential there is between the Dem and Repub totals and then where they came from. Thanks if you can help.

Re: Vote Totals? (none / 0)

Thanks for the link.  The vote totals look bad for the Dems but we'll hope that is just due to all the interest in the Repub race.  Here in Dayton the local paper had a 10 paragraph story and only the last paragraph mentioned that Hackett won.  I sent him a donation yesterday, I think he can win but then we have to do it all over again next year.

Hackett looks like a strong canidate: (none / 0)

He seems to stand up for alot of Democratic principles, also he seems likeable and a good overall canidate.

Also it seems like the GOP is running more and more far right-wing facist Republican women.

We've got to jump into this campaign now! (none / 0)

Don't underestimate Paul Hackett.  He's far from wacko leftist, and he can appeal to just about everyone but the hopeless rapture zealots who've had their brains eaten.  Things are just beginning to change in the political landscape right now, and Hackett's primed to be in the vanguard of it.  It's like a frozen river that's just starting to break up and flow at the beginning of the thaw.  There are cracks in the Borg Republican monolith and the glue's starting to fracture.  Resistance is NOT futile.

Hackett's starting to get attention from other places around the state, and the country.  He's being interviewed on The Ed Schultz Show on Tuesday, June 21st.  Let's make evryone aware of Paul Hackett.

Hackett's 6/21/05 Ed Shulz Show Appearance (none / 0)

I'm having difficulty finding an audio link for Paul Hackett's appearance on Ed Shulz' show a couple of days ago.  Can anyone help on that or possibly a transcript?

This thread is the most detailed I've yet encountered on Paul's candidacy for the open House seat here in the 2nd District of Ohio.

I can't emphasize too much how excited we Democrats here feel about having a candidate of his caliber to represent us going into the fights ahead.

Thank you all for your attention and support for this promising young leader.
