DeWine Rejected

In the Republican primary for the special election in the OH-02, Pat DeWine has finished a pathetic fourth with only 12% of the vote.

The bad news is that this means that voters will not be able to react to the general anti-DeWine sentiment growing in Ohio. Jean Schimdt, the Republican nominee, has around a 99.9% chance of winning this seat.

The good news is that Ohio voters, even in this super Republican district, hate the name DeWine. We learned today that DeWine has a very low apporval rating in Ohio. All it will take to win he Senate seat is a Democratic nominee that doesn't suck.

With Schimdt winning I think this helps boosts Hackett's chance of winning in August.  Maybe I am just a foolish optomist, but Schimdt is crazy and I think that moderate Republican voters will have a hard time voting for her and some of them may cross the line for the clean cut Marine--Paul Hackett.

Well, that's true, but this district is probably too Republican with too few moderates. I fear that even Zell Miller couldn't win it with "D" letter after his name..

I found some stuff on "Mean Jean" Schmidt"
http://www.cincypost.com/2004/03/13/edita031304.html
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that two of Householder's top aides, fund-raiser Kyle Sisk and political adviser Brett Buerck, were offered bonuses if they could persuade Niehaus to drop out of the race and avoid a contested primary. The newspaper also reported that Householder personally made a telephone call to a lobbyist suggesting a campaign contribution to Schmidt (who won the primary by about 60 votes out of 33,700 cast; a recount is pending).

Club for Growth PAC Unveils Ad Opposing Ohio-2 Pro-Tax Candidate Jean Schmidt

Washington, D.C. -- The political action arm of Club for Growth, a national free-market advocacy organization with over 30,000 members, today unveiled a radio ad opposing Ohio's 2nd District Republican candidate Jean Schmidt for her record of supporting higher taxes.

Jean Schmidt is running in a Republican primary for the seat previously held by Rob Portman, who was recently appointed U.S. Trade Representative by President Bush. Other strong contenders in this field include Pat DeWine, Tom Brinkman, and Bob McEwen.

"Jean Schmidt is a proven supporter of higher taxes. Her record in the Ohio State Legislature shows that she voted to raise the state sales tax and opposed efforts to keep property taxes down," said Club for Growth President Pat Toomey. "Pat DeWine, Tom Brinkman, and Bob McEwen all have much better records and positions on the issues of taxes and spending. Any one of them would be highly preferable to Jean Schmidt."

Mr. Toomey continued, "Local voters need to know the truth about Jean Schmidt's poor record so they can be sure to vote against her on June 14th."

She was also endorsed by NRA and Ohio Right to Life.

Don't believe it (none / 0)

Paul Hackett is the real deal, and this is a real opportunity.

Hacket is a war hero who can work a crowd and win over undecideds.  Here in the land of missing millions and GOP "pay to play," somebody like Hackett might be just exactly what the voters want.

OH-2 includes some of the fastest-growing (therefore demographically changing) areas in Ohio.  This open-seat race, with the big-name GOPers knocked out, is a prime opportunity.  Labor has mobilized behind Hackett, and that's no small advantage.

Don't even BEGIN to write this one off.  If he can get the money and the help, he can join Herseth and Chandler as a special election winner.

Does Paul Hackett have a website? (none / 0)

I don't know anything about him. I tried to find some information from the Ohio Democratic Party website. The Democratic Party should use the website to provide more information on who is running for office and in which district and then provide links to the candidate's website.

Paul Hackett? (none / 0)

Please provide more info on Paul Hackett.  The time might be good here in Ohio to throw out the money-grubbing, dirty GOPers.  I am just not sure that Ohioans have had enough yet.  How much corruption is enough for people to vote out Taft and his peeps?

DeWine's Potential Opponents? (none / 0)

I'd love to know more about who we have to challenge DeWine. I remember since he only won in 1994 with 53% of the vote, there was a lot of talk in 2000 about DeWine's potential vulnerability. But that year, he beat Celeste handily 60-38. His seat is on Charlie Cook's list as Likely Republican, but his low approval rating and the Republican Coingate implosion should make him vulnerable to the right opponent. So who do we have?
