Special election to replace Ohio 2nd district Congressman Rob Portman who was approved by the Senate as Bush's Trade Rep.
The primary is just over 1 month away, on June 14 and the special election is on August 2.
Despite best efforts, both of the high profile Democrats in the district; State Rep Tryone Yates and State Rep Todd Book took a pass.
6 Democrats did successfully file, however, and party officials in the area are talking up 2 of them.
2.Victoria Wells Wulsin,51, a Pysician and Epidemiologist who is the President of Soteni Inc, a non profit anti AIDS organiztion. She seems to be trying to position herself as a 'centrist' Democrat, emphasing her committment to balanced budgets. She criticized the Republican Party for no longer being conservative, but extreme.
The other Democrats are:
1.Russell Hurley,41, a Barber
2.Charlie Sanders,58, a Retired G.M Employee and former Mayor of Waynesville. Mr Sanders has been the Democratic nominee in the district from 1998-2004. He is a conservative Democrat.
3.Jeff Sinnard,43, a Civil Engineer. He is a pro-life Democrat who otherwise seems to take mostly liberal positions.
4.James Parker, a Health Care Administrator
This is purely a guess on my part: the Democratic "establishment" in the district will be concerned that Charlie Sanders will get the nomination, and so, will come out strongly for either Hackett or Wulsin.
2 other Democrats were also mentioned
1.Arthur Katz,82, a lawyer, failed to get enough valid signatures to qualify for the ballot
2.Thor Jacobs, Vice President of Sovereign Homes (a homebuilding company) planned to run, but, I guess, decided in the end not to.
12 Republicans are running
The 3 frontrunners are:
1.Pat De Wine, a Lawyer and Hamilton County Commissioner. He is the son of Senator Mike De Wine
2.Tom Brinkman, a Curry Printing Company Sales Manager and State Representative
3.Jean Schmidt, a former State Representative.
According to a couple posters on Kos, Brinkman and Schmidt are both arch theocons. How they split the vote should be interesting.
The rest are:
4.Eric Minamyer,52, a self employed lawyer, navy reserve captain who did support work for the Iraq and Afghan wars and Symmes Township Trustee and Board President
5.Bob McEwen, Former Ohio Congressman from 1980-'84 when he was appointed by Ronald Reagan as a Representative to the European Parliament.
6.David Smith, Procter and Gamble Financial Analyst.
7.Tom Bemmes, Junior High School Math Teacher and Professional Magician, Former President Reading School Board
8.Peter Fossett, Teacher
9.Steve Austin,57, Retired Civics Teacher
10.August Geier
11.Jeff Morgan, part time Mail Carrier and Youth Minister
12.Douglas Mink, 2002 State Rep candidate
Anybody on the ground have any information?
