Army Recruiters threatening people; ordered to stand down!

Cross-posted at DailyKos.

KHOU in Houston broke this story and has the audio online - it's now going out on the wires:

An Army recruiter has been caught on tape threatening a kid with jail time.  The Pentagon has ordered a "stand-down" nationwide.

Voicemail announcement: "Yesterday at 9:36 AM"

Recruiter: "Hey Chris, this is Arquell [?] at the Army, man, I think we got disconnected.  OK, I know you're on your cell, probably, and, uh you just had bad reception.. connection or something like that, I know you didn't hang up on me.  Anyway, uh, by, by uh, Federal law you've got an appointment with me at two o'clock this afternoon at Greenpoint Mall, OK?  That's the Greenpoint Mall, Army Recruiting Station at two o'clock.  Fail to appear, and, uh, we'll have a warrant. OK? Give me a call back. (281) 872-0184.  Bye. "

Voicemail announcement: "End of message.  To delete.."

Re: "Stand-down?" (none / 0)

I believe it's a 24-hr stand-down..

just enough time to ground your kids from going to the Mall this summer.

holy shit.  Do we need to start up citizen brigades to roam the malls and protect our kids from the Army now?

Nah. (none / 0)

Just remember all those Public Service Announcements about how to talk to your kids about drugs.

Then replace the word "dealer" with "recruiter," and the phrase "ruin your life" with "get your limbs blown off," and you're all set.

Hey, this might make a neat campaign.

"What will your kid say when he's approached by a recruiter?"

Yeah, I'm cynical.

If parents don't care about their own kids why should we.

Better pay would fix this (none / 0)

As it turns out, most American kids aren't so dumb that they don't understand this equation:

enlistment = food stamps + IEDs

Apparently, a lot of young people figured out they could work at Wal-Mart a NOT have any limbs torn from their bodies.

IT amazes me that 10% of US strength in Iraq is being supplied by private firms whose soldiers are being paid in the range of $70,000-200,000 a year (and the firm is taking an additional fee), yet somehow we just can't stomach paying these kids maybe $25,000 or $30,000 a year.

Also, it is ironic that the world's most advanced military, which pays as much as $2 billion dollars for a single stealth bomber, is losing an infantry war for lack of boots on the ground.

Maybe that isn't ironic.  Maybe it's just proof of where our government's priorities are.
